I purchased this jacket at a REI Re/Supply store. I was looking for a rain shell for an upcoming trip to Patagonia and asked an associate for her opinion. I told her I wanted something that would dry overnight because I would be doing multiple days of hiking. She showed me this jacket and said was new fabric technology that made it "twice as waterproof" as hardshell jackets I've worn in the past. I was convinced by her confidence, and I did like the fit of the coat (especially the length). However, I tested this jacket twice this week on a 2-mile walk in the rain. This jacket absorbs the rain and immediately feels heavy. Within 10 minutes, the jacket was soaked from the rain and sticking to my underlayer (a tried-and-true Arc'teryx Atom hoody). Water collected at the wrist and dripped into my hands. I felt cold, clammy and wet for my entire walk. I didn't remove this fully-zipped jacket until I got indoors. When I took it off, it was clear a lot of water had seeped through. My Atom hoody had visible wet spots all along the sleeves, shoulders, front and hood. And it took forever to dry after both walks, so it would not work for a backpacking situation. This jacket is NOT rainproof at all. It made me feel cold and wet, even when wearing two quality (and tested) base layers. I am so disappointed the REI sales associate assured me it would be a good choice for my trip, but I cannot return it because I bought it at Re/Supply. (By the way: Before purchasing I looked at the reviews for this coat on Kuhl's website, where the average rating was 4.5+ stars. I suspect the reviews on Kuhl's website are not authentic; there are too many odd similarities between comments). Please don't buy this jacket, even for travel or light city rain situations. It looks nice, but it doesn't perform. This is the first time I've been disappointed with a purchase recommended by an associate at REI.
Normally I love Kuhl products but this one missed the mark. It’s comfortable when dry, the stretch is nice, the color is lovely, but when it is worn in the rain (which is kind of the point) it does not repel water. It feels like you are literally wet, cold and clammy inside the jacket so I thought I had a defective one. I reached out to Kuhl who explained that their technology absorbs the rain and disperses it within the jacket layers rather than repel it, so although you feel uncomfortably damp and cold, technically you aren’t actually wet as the water doesn’t go all the way through. And although it feels for all the world like your skin and clothes are wet, if you press a paper towel against the inside, it does actually stay dry. But for me, it’s also important to not feel soggy and miserable while staying dry so this one is going back.
This jacket is not waterproof. As another review stated- which I wish I would have seen prior to buying this!- Kuhl should be ashamed for marketing this as waterproof when it clearly isn’t. I was soaked in a downpour. I have no idea how other people say it kept them dry. There’s no way. There are other things wrong with this jacket but it’s a raincoat that says it’s waterproof and it’s not. That’s all you need to know. Don’t buy it and expect to stay dry.
I bought this jacket for outdoor use during rain. The material is very soft, feels comfortable, and it is stylish. It also does not take up a lot of space and is easy to pack. I took it with me on a trip to Costa Rica and got caught in a down pour. This was my first time trying it out during the rain. I noticed the outside layer absorbed moisture and was quickly looking wet. After getting out of the rain, I closely inspected the inside layer and even used tissues to see if water seeped through. Technically, my inside layer stayed dry, so it technically is "waterproof", but it does not feel that way when you are wearing it. I had to use the jacket again later that day, and it was still very wet on the outside. It was like putting on a wet bed sheet on yourself even though inside you are dry. Since it was in the 60s at that time and dark, it felt quite cold with this jacket on when the outside layer was wet. The jacket finally dried up the next day in the afternoon after I put the hood on my head to help air out the jacket during a hike when it was sunny. I had 10,000 mm waterproof black diamond pants on me as well. They stayed dry during the same downpour and were mostly dry by the time I went on the evening outing. This jacket is rated for 20,000 mm. Overall, it does keep you dry on the inside, but, based on other people's reviews here, the technology used ends up absorbing water into the outside layer, so the jacket gets very wet and uncomfortable to wear, especially in cooler weather. I ended up returning it (very grateful to REI return policy) and purchased Patagonia Torrentshell, which does not feel as comfortable but is better at keeping you feeling dry and being dry.
I purchased a women’s Kuhl Voyagr Jacket in slate blue for a trip to the U.K. and it worked out great. I liked that it’s light weight and packable. I’m 36DD and the large fit me well even over a long sleeve shirt and light sweater. Before my trip, I wore it on a rainy day and it kept me dry. I like the hood but wish it could be folded in when not in use. It has one zippered interior pocket big enough for my iPhone and 2 zippered exterior pockets. I would’ve liked another interior pocket. These are minor details and I’m still happy with my purchase.
A perfect fit! I was thrilled to find a rain coat that had a bit of stretch, wasn't stiff and looked really nice on. I am curvy, with big hips (size 12-14 bottoms) and the large fit perfectly over a light sweater. Often jackets are very tight at the hip for me but fit elsewhere, causing it to ride up annoyingly but the little slits on the sides makes it slip and slide just right. The cinch waist option is even nicer and doesn't look tacky like they do sometimes. Comfortable hood, great coverage and a beautiful unique soft sagey moss green. Can't wait to try it out in the rain on my upcoming hiking trip.
I wanted to love this jacket. It is soft and supple not stiff and crunchy like so many 'waterproof' jackets. It is lightweight and would be excellent for travel. It fit nicely with some shape to it not boxy. The length was perfect for hiking and around town. The problem is that it isn't waterproof at all. Water resistant for about 15 minutes. But in a true rain it was wet inside after about 15 minutes. The top I was wearing under it became soaked in a few more minutes. Miserable. Only can use as a windbreaker, not as a waterproof rain jacket. Replaced it with a Patagonia Torrentshell 3L jacket that IS waterproof and works beautifully.
I bought this rain jacket for my recent trip to Alaska. It rained there 10 out of the 12 days we were there. This jacket kept me dry and warm for the duration of the trip. I like that it is a little longer than most other comparable rain jackets and the stretchy material is very comfortable. I also love the Kuhl brand and have many other clothing items made by them. I’d definitely recommend this jacket.
This jacket is soft, quiet, keeps me dry, and it fits over layers. I like the length. It's not a trench but it's long enough to cover my backside. Love the new bright Poppy color! Good safety color in the mountains. Nice enough looking to take a break from my usual tech dork outfits.
Received as a gift for my trip to Montana. I really like the fit - able to layer. I wear a size medium. It looks good if you need to wear it apres hike! Fabric is lightweight and soft for a rain jacket. Has ample pockets, packable, good coverage over hips/bottom (I’m curvy). Flattering optional cinch at waistline so it has more style than your typical boxy rain jacket. I recommend it!
