Durability lacking
Really liked these shoes. They were comfortable, stylish and easy to slip on and off with the speed lace system. Durability is lacking. Within 3 months of wearing around the house and running errands the tread wear was noticeable. Within 6 months the sides of the mesh are tearing where it meets the sole on both shoes. Rest of the shoes looks in new condition except for these flaws. For a shoes that wasn’t used for exercise, long walks, running, yard work they wore down very fast. My last pair of Adidas gym shoes lasted almost 2 years under the same function and for the price of the On Cloud 5’s I would have expected more than a few months out of them.
Exceptional comfort, BUT material in toe section..
Love the comfort, BUT the material in the toe section on both shoes wore through after 4 months of wear. I shoes are still functional, so if you care about the "look" of the shoe, consider getting one that has better material covering "on top/across" the toe area. This seems to me like a design flaw. These shoes are super comfortable without a doubt, and I don't worry about the looks, but would not spend the $'s again because of this issue, hence the 3 stars and not 5.
Love fit and comfort but …
Great shoe own many but something is wrong with the quality of this style . Owned the shoe for one month and it separated at the seem. Very disappointing!
Comfortable Shoe but Subpar Quality for the Price
Have bought several pairs of these over past five years as are comfortable running shoes but the last pair I bought was much poorer quality than earlier ones, and OC customer service was completely disappointing as far as fixing simple request to replace defective laces. Laces broke within weeks of buying them when I tried to get replacements OC customer service asked for lots of information and after several emails they just passed me off to go back to retailer which wasn't option at the time. Shoes also developed tears in side fabric after just a couple months.
Very comfortable, but wear out too fast
I absolutely loved the comfort and light feeling of these shoes; however, after three stikes, they're out. Strike 1: The very thing that makes them so light weight and comfortable also makes them wear & tear prematurely. I'm not a runner and only wore them for casual (walking) use, but after about 6 months of usage, a hole wore through in the fine mesh in the toe box area. Strike 2: In any damp environment (e.g., wet grass), the water quickly soaks through that mesh and soaks your socks - they do have a waterproof version of these (which I also have), but they are far less comfortable. Strike 3: This one is more of an annoyance, but small rocks & gravel constantly get stuck in the tread on the bottom and need to be picked out.
Not for everyone
I got these as a casual, everyday walking shoe - something I could slip on and go without worrying about anything. After living with them for a few months, I'm not a fan anymore. The sole catches rocks and other debris like a car tire - I'll have to stop walking and remove whatever it's caught, or the floor of my car accumulates the debris I don't notice. And then what finally did me in was the insoles. Initially they would stick to my feet when I took them off, so I'd have to put them back in place every time, but now they squeak with every step. I can't wear them out anymore because it's so obnoxious and embarrassing. Thankful for REI and being able to return footwear!
Surprised they are falling apart!
I have had these shoes for 1 year and 6 days and they are literally coming apart at the seems. I don't run, I only walk and wear these shoes 3 or 4 times per week. They are separating from the heal on both shoes. I am so surprised how quickly these shoes are coming apart based on minimal activity use.
light and comfortable but doesn’t last.
I liked these shoes right away and though it had found my favorite brand. Unfortunately there is two major problems for which I will not order this brand anymore. The first is a general annoyance: these shoes collect pebbles and gravel more than I thought. My car’s floor mat if full of gravel and small rocks at the end of the week from these shoes collecting them on the bottom. Second and most important: they lasted 4 months! Just walking around the city, they both have holes on the side where the shoe bends at every step . So the quality here is very poor. But as I mentioned very light and comfortable.
Nice shoes but.....
I'm sure it must be a one-off situation but my shoes routinely squeak when walking. It's not the type of squeak that you hear from basketball players. It's a simple squeak/swoosh that happens on any type of surface. I'm simply walking into the gym from the parking lot or in the locker room. It's a little unfortunate because my wife has had 3 pairs of On shoes as have several relatives. Because they don't experience the issue, it's got to be manufacturing. Be mindful of their customer support. They're very prompt and courteous but quickly denied the warranty. I want to like these shoes but I feel like George Costanza in his new suit swishing and squeaking everywhere I go.
Comfortable and effective gym shoe
Comfortable shoes to cruise around town in, however the tread structure of the shoe grabs loose gravel in my driveway before I ever go for
a hike.
With this shoe, I find a lot of random rocks inside my house,
my car and on my sidewalk after packing my car. Hiking in these shoe
isn’t bad/or great.

Twigs and rocks get stuck in the tread which probably affects the way the shoe is suppose to flex.

So for those reasons, these shoes are more about fashion and less about overall function. Overall, these shoes seem to be better suited for a hike around your neighborhood with, perhaps a few dirt trails and less about seeking out to hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.
