Salomon X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex Shoes - Quality No Good
Peter Genovese
I've been a Salomon fan for 20 years. It's the only hiking shoe l've worn and always been happy with it, specifically the X Ultra model w/ GoreTex. When the new X Ultra 4 model came out a few years ago, I purchased a pair and was immediately put off by the 1) much shorter tongue which made it extremely hard to tuck the laces strap into and 2) the pain in my toe box that I was getting with every step due to the crease spot of the shoe when I took steps forward. I had too much pain in my foot so I found a pair of X Ultra 3 on Amazon and used that instead. But now I need new shoes... So, fast forward to when I purchased a new pair of these newly updated Salomon X Ultra 4 WIDE at a size 10 for men and after trying them on, my left shoe was painful, AGAIN, due to the crease issue whereas my right foot was perfectly fine. I could clearly see that there was a major difference between the left and right shoe crease points and while the right shoe felt great, I noticed the sewing quality of the left shoe was different and I could see that it stretched the Gore-Tex material more in the toe box area which caused the painful crease in a spot where it shouldn't be creasing. The right shoe was creasing in a normal area which was fine with no issue. So, I decided to buy ANOTHER exact same pair, hoping that the new pair's left shoe would be sewn properly and be a good fit without the painful creasing issue. I just tried the new pair and both left and right shoes fit great with no toe box crease pain. FINALLY. It has taken me years of trying on these new models to finally not have this crease issue. I chalk this up to Salomon cutting corners to save on costs and going with cheaper shoe makers which has resulted in the quality of the shoes going downhill, as I've experienced. I was about ready to jump ship because of this. I'm about to test the new pair on a hike tomorrow. So far with a quick test at home, the crease issue is a non issue with this pair. But I've also heard from others that the tread wears way quicker now with these newer model shoes. If that's the case, I absolutely will be jumping ship and exploring other options after this latest pair. Here's a photo of two pairs of the shoes, showing the left foot shoe. The one on the left has the crease where it destroys my toes where as the new pair in the right are properly sewn which results in a usable shoe.

Downgrade for the Ultra

I've had four pairs of the X Ultra 3 - they're some of the most comfortable and capable hiking shoes I've ever owned. I tried three different pairs of the new Ultra 4 and the shoe is made with a painful indentation above the arch that sticks into the inside of your feet. I finally found one pair that had less severe of an indent, and I stuffed baseballs into the shoes and wore them for 4 days just start breaking them. Then I realized there was also a tongue problem on one of the shoes where it wasn't staying in place while walking. I'm taking these back, which is a bummer because I'm a big Salomon shoe fan. These are so close to being great but I'm planning a big trip and don't need to be worrying about my shoes.

Powered through Arches National Park

I really like the Ultra 4 GoreTex. Took them with me hiking in New Zealand and Australia and just returned from visiting the Mighty 5 in Utah. These are great for all types of hiking, but they really helped grip the rock at Delicate Arch in Utah's Arches National Park. I am going to get the mid-boot version to try out as well.

Very disappointed

Hi, I wanted to complain about the Salomon's X ultra 4 gtx. I've had them for only four months now and the bottom of the heal is bald and the fabric is falling apart I have been taking very good care of them as if I'll do anything rough at all I'll swap shoes I haven't gone into water in them climbing or running not even approaches. I can't wear them anymore due to the inside of the heel is torn up and peeling the skin on my Achilles heel I'm very disappointed with this as there flagship hiking shoe. It works very well now the gortex walking in wet grass but rain or more it'll come in but it does better then most but a normal leather la sportiva will do better against the rain. Quicklace is nice but half the time I have to readjust them not as quick as u think. They are comfy but a problem is u can stand on a ledge easily with the side as the foot as the shoe wants to give and mould around it instead of support you. I have found the grip of the shoe to be lacking to as if u only have half of the sole on a rock it won't have a good enough contact patch and it will slip normally u can use half a sole but with these at an angle u need about 80% contact. The tread also looks like it will do really good in light mud but it doesn't at all light gravel and dry dirt is all and not the best still. I will attach the photo of the shoes.

X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex

I have owned dozens of pairs of the OLDER model of this shoe (X Ultra Gore-Tex). It is the only shoe I have wore for 12 years. The only problems I have had is occasionally one of the eyelets would tear after some use. I have purchased 2 pairs of the new version (X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex). The first pair in size 13 which I always wore in the previous model. The heal was slipping and the fabric wore out and pealed on the inside heal causing blisters after 2 weeks and could not wear them any more. I thought Salomon changed the sizing so I bought a second pair in 12 1/2 hoping this would resolve the issue. Same problem heal slipping causing blisters. Material in heal has not worn or pealed but can’t wear the shoe. 2 basically new pairs of shoes I can’t wear. Salomon should have not made modifications to this shoe. I ended up purchasing the Salomon X Ultra Pioneer Water proof in size 13 which uses Salomon’s membrane version of Gore - Tex. They are basically the same as the older model X Ultra Gore Tex but with a traditional lacing system. Not sure at this point if Salomon’s waterproof membrane will be as good as Gore-Tex. It’s To bad too, as I liked the quick pull lace system. Further, Salomon online sizing recommendations are wrong I measured my foot as they direct said I was a 10 1/2. I’ve always worn a 13 in their shoes. The X Ultra 4 they suggest you order a size up from your regular Salomon fit. I personally would suggest the opposite. I am a letter carrier for the post and do allot of walking in all conditions. Currently I remain loyal to Salomon however I wish they would not continue to make all the small changes to their shoes as in my case they were not improvements. At this point I have not tried to make a warranty claim with Salomon. See photographs attached.

Disappointing

I have worn Salomon footwear for years, specifically the X Ultra series prior to this 4th edition. I’ve had these shows about a year and generally use them for light hiking with dog, generally non technical trails and pathways. Previously these shoes would last quite a long time but this new design is terrible. The high back at the ankle rubs quite a bit and the material at the toes has cracked and broken. The sole has held up as usual. I have not experienced problems like this with the previous versions, I literally wore them until the soles wore out. I see these issues on other sellers sites as well, hopefully Salomon will fix these issues!!!

Just OK. Good for a year BUT Buyer beware!

I purchased these 18 months ago. I did a fair amount of hiking with them but not overall that much. Mostly have worn them around the house and yard. The cord tie is good if you want to basically use them as a slip on shoe. If you want to tighten them for a tougher hike they tend to loosen up quite a bit and I have to keep pulling them tight multiple times. Recently, I noticed a hole on the top of the fabric that just appeared for no reason on both shoes except that is where the fabric creases when I walk. Now I have shoes with holed in the top so I doubt they're still water proof. Unfortunately a few months ago I purchased another pair for a hiking trip to Europe. This is a 5 week trip. I'm guessing using them everyday over there will quickly break down the top of the shoe even quicker. I've had other hiking shoes that I still have 5 years later and use them only for messy jobs as the soles wore out before the fabric or leather. This will not be the case with these shoes. A year in they I would have rated between a 3 and 4. 18 months in they rate only a 2. I will not be buying a third payer. Buyer beware.

Seams and Breathability

Wife bought these for a birthday present in July mainly where them at weekends, so haven't worn them too much and already they look about 5 yrs old seam at the front appears to be coming apart, and the top appears to look damp as moisture cant escape, currently trying to see if the 2yr warranty will cover the faulty seam, one i can upload the receipt and if possible i would exchange for a darker pair , so it doesn't look like i have sweaty feet, shoes are comfortable had no issues with sole as previous reviews go by overall a good shoe just a shame there not breathable as stated and seam is coming apart. pics attached

Very disappointing

I bought these to replace my first Salomons, the Ultra 3 GTX, that had been fantastic for 3 years on daily use and rough terrain. However even after 12 months seasonal use only and much lighter work than the 3's, the cloth upper areas have ripped as well as some of the rubber joins, compromising the water seal, after only a year. Now having to replace already and having looked back to see there aren't any new/better designed shoes released, I will be looking to go elsewhere.

Quality is Down

I love the Solomon brand, I have many shoes from them, I’ve had several pairs of the X ultra. My last pair was a few years old before they started coming apart, but Solomon changed the fabric inside the shoe, and I have had these for just a couple weeks and there is a hole where my achilles tendon touches the inside back of the shoe. The fabric is not as good a quality as previous shoes and has separated from the other part of the lining on the stitch line.

They last about a year

These hiking shoes lasted about a year of light use before a tear developed where the toe flexes. I used them for light hiking, on rainy days, and twice while walking around Europe on vacation. On my last trip a tear developed where the toe flexes and became progressively worse. They survived roughly 150-200 miles of light use. I am not impressed with the quality, but experiences will vary. My own opinion is I will not be buying Solomons again.

Both shoes leak

I’ve had the shoes for just over a year. They’ve had a lot of use. The logos came off the tongue of both shoes after about a week. Not that important though. They have been comfortable and have great support and grip. A few months ago both shoes started to let water in, even when walking through dew covered grass. These shoes were awesome, until they started to fall apart…….
