It is exactly what you remember…
Just like the old days…but improved functionality! Works great…first time, every time.
Get back to your camping roots
A good old fashioned fuel and mantle lantern like I grew up using, camping with my Grandparents. That warm glow you just don’t get with todays LEDs takes me back to less stressful times in my life. Coleman knows what they are doing when it comes to the simple features and construction of the Powerhouse Lantern. Not every camping item needs to be high tech. Get back to your roots. Worth every penny.
That great whooshing sound
I had one of these ages ago and somehow lost it. Grew up with one as a kid. It's like a beacon in the night, and nothing makes that great whooshing sound like one of these. We're were in a no-fires campground, and this little buddy still gives you something to huddle around. Plus, if you're into tactility, it's very satisfying to pump that little pumpy thing.
Legendary lantern for around the camp for a reason
If you're looking for a lantern, this thing is legendary. The amount of light output this thing produces is incredible and its warm, comforting light. I grew up with these things around camp and they have always been the standard. When looking for a lighting solution for my car camping setup, I considered the battery lights but ultimately decided for a tried and true legend. A small can of white gas lasts a long time, easily a weekend of usage. Once your LED light is out of juice, it needs to be recharged, and rarely puts out nearly as much light. Buy a few extra mantles and you're all good.
All about ambience….
Although this lantern will light up your campsite nicely, the soft, warm glow this emits takes me back to camping as a kid. If you love anything having to do with camping, campfires, and just developing good memories…this will be a great addition and really sets the mood. A regular LED lantern, which I have quite a few, just cannot compare.
Seems to work great
So far so good. It's lit up every time I've needed it too so far. Still is made in the USA save for the globe, that's what made be decide to buy a new lantern as opposed to buying an old one. The only real complaint is that the sticker is garbage and is already bubbling off. The sticker on my new Stove is also garbage and the lettering wore off somewhat after a normal cleaning. I also dislike that the the model numbers are really confusing now, since they got rid of the older numbering convention.
Coleman Powerhouse Dual Fuel Lantern
The Coleman Powerhouse Dual Fuel Lantern (295) is the brighter of the two currently marketed Coleman dual lanterns and is the version carried by REI. The Coleman dual fuel system, in both its lanterns and stoves, has been around a long time and is well tested and durable. I ran a full tank of full in order to test the Powerhouse (about 8 hours run time). It worked exactly as expected and looks well built. As with all Coleman dual fuel and propane lanterns, the mantles are the most fragile parts. So it always pays to have a number of extra mantles available. While I have not yet had the opportunity to take it into the field, I see no reason to expect anything but excellent performance . Although REI does not sell the protective Coleman cases, they are available online. I have also picked up a 1 inch by 8ft lashing strap which wraps twice around the case to ensure that the bottom of the case will not separate from the top. (In case the user did not fully connect the two parts of the case.) I often choose to order from REI because of REI's quite fair treatment of its members. As has been my previous REI ordering experience, the lantern was shipped promptly and arrived quickly and undamaged.
Flagship of Lanterns
Originally I purchased the Northstar Duel Fuel to add to my collection of gas lanterns, but this thing is awesome, I have been reading mixed reviews about the Northstar and had concerns before I was able to get one. The features I really like are the ignition battery to light the lantern, self cleaning so no more “cranking” the cleaner brush, and the brightness of the light output. If there is a complaint it has nothing to do with the lantern (other than red color would be nice), but the lack of accessories. I would like to see a hard case with storage for the funnel and extra mantels, a reflector to direct light, and a larger hat to keep rain water off off the hot glass.
Survival Must Have
Gonna keep it short. Coleman Dual Fuel is a must have for everyone. I have been using these lanterns for more than 40 years. I was taught that every family of 5 should have no less than 3 of these lanterns with 6 sets of mantles for each. Do your own research on lighting indoor and out. Attached photo is one of my laterns burning out the old fuel in 30 mph winds with heavy, cold rain. Occasional flickering like electric, but no failure

Quality is great and just the job done—it’s everything you can expect from Coleman and more. What a bright boy!
