Small light hatchet
I received a free scout hatchet for my honest review. It seems well made and has an included a well made leather holder. I cut some dried walnut (a little hard) and some green poplar (easier) but I felt like I didn’t cut very fast with it. It’s a pretty light hatchet so you’re not swinging with a lot of momentum. However because it’s so light, I would not hesitate to take this camping with me to help make kindling. I think the angle of the blade is around 13 degrees, but I only measured the picture, not the actual item with a real protractor. It is small enough to fit into my day pack. The handle is 10.25” and the toe to the butt of the head is 4.75”.
The blade head is heavy and brings a lot of force.
The hatchet is good to use around the homestead, camping and hiking for clearing branches, bushes, maintaining trails and clearing thickets. The hatchet fits snug in the belt and is easy to grab. The motion to grab the axe was difficult at first but became more easy and natural with time. This is a great tool that is super sharp. The information on the site in sharpening was extremely useful. The first few cuts cleared brush and de limbed branches extremely well. I expect this product to fit any outdoors person tool belt with ease! See pics as example of the hatchet being used to prep my firewood.
Portable and gets the job done
Great for car camping and beach bonfires. We hoped it’d create kindling and shavings from logs and it’s perfect for that. No more worrying that we’ll run out of small wood or paper when a gust blows out a burgeoning flame. The nicks left from the shavings help larger logs catch a flame faster too. Wish it would chop logs tho that’d mean a bigger more cumbersome axe. Love the portability and the leather safety cover, and the red stripe so it doesn’t get lost in the dark! It gets too dark to show the wood shavings from fires we’ve made, so one photo was re-created after our fires to show them.
Great small axe for a first-time user
This lightweight and small axe is my first experience with using this type of tool. After a few quick lessons from a seasoned woodsperson, I was confident enough to start hacking away and practice my skills. The tool is lightweight and small enough for me to maneuver with little effort while effectively splitting some kindling. This will be a useful addition to my travel emergency kit and my backpack for day and overnight hikes. For anyone who has little exposure to this type of tool, I would encourage you to try this. It's well-made, lightweight and easy to use.
Handy Little Hatchet
Besides being great for general home yard cleanup, this hatchet will be a great addition to our box of camping and car emergency supplies. During my testing so far, the size and weight of the hatchet makes it easy to hold and use. It has a comfortably-weighted head that makes cutting kindling a breeze. The textured black paint would be more beneficial if it went farther up the handle, but this is a minor detail. The hatchet comes with a durable leather blade sheath, an ash handle, and a carbon steel blade. It’s a beaut! I received a free scout hatchet for my honest review.
Beautifully crafted hatchet!
I've only used well-used or inexpensively made hatchets in the past; this Adler hatchet is a game changer. It feels so balanced in my hand. Beautifully crafted and the leather blade sheath is very durable, and has a swing out loop for hanging. The hatchet arrived in a storage bag, which I'll keep it in at least to start. As for cutting, I initially used the hatchet for camp fire kindling; the blade set well on the first thwack and the dry wood I have was in pieces in short order. My old/used/unbalanced hatchet is now retired from service.
Great versatile hatchet
Very versatile hatchet, I loved the sharpness of the blade and the fit and finish of the handle with grip texture towards the bottom, also liked the included sheath however the belt loop came apart after my first camping trip which was a bit of a bummer considering it happened while cleaning the sheath and rubbing mink oil to protect it. I used the hatchet to chop up some wood I had laying aroond for a camping trip to the beach. I also used the hatchet to create the fire pit after realizing I left my shovel home. Also used the hatchet to drive I. Tent stakes and a dog tie down. Overall the hatchet was invaluable during this trip as we would not have had a fire pit if I didn’t pack it up. The only thing I’d change is the hardware for the sheath belt loop since it gave out after one use.
Easy to make perfect.
I removed the black grippy and red paint. Next I used boiled linseed oil on the handle. So much better. It’s a perfect little hatchet now.
A Fantastic All-Around Tool - Small, Light, Sharp
The Adler Classic Scout Hatchet is a great compact, light-weight tool for use at home or away. After a recent storm, several limbs had come down from a maple in my back yard. The Scout Hatchet did a great job of removing all of the small branches so that I could easily saw up the larger diameter limb. The handle was comfortable and fit perfectly in my hand. I never felt like I would lose control of the hatchet. The textured black painted portion of the handle made sure that I had a good grip. While the texturing did its job, I would have liked to have it extend a little bit further up the handle. People with smaller hands or who prefer a higher grip will not get as much benefit from texturing. After hacking off about a dozen and a half branches from the maple limb, the blade was noticeably dulled, probably from the hardness of the wood. Taking a sharpening stone to it quickly brought back a nice sharp edge and made it ready for its next job. Although I haven't had a chance to yet, I will definitely bring this hatchet with me on my next camping trip. The sure grip and sharp blade will be perfect for processing wood for the always necessary camp fire.
Light, Portable, Scout-y
This feels like the epitome of a portable scout axe. I haven't brought it out on a camping trip just yet, but it's been working spectacularly for backyard campfires and tending to some random branches and broken fence pieces around the backyard. It's also beautiful and comfortable with a nice grip. I anticipate using this quite a bit on late Fall and early Winter trips when firewood is available in the area -- perfect for procuring kindling.
