This was my first mountain bike, but I wanted a bike I could grow into without breaking the bank. Friends suggested a hardtail was a good place to start, so I could learn technique and deciding what type of riding I wanted to do before investing in a full-suspension bike. It comes with name-brand components and extras you learn to appreciate like hydraulic brakes, air shocks and a dropper post for the seat. I tried out (7) bikes across brands at a similar price point in a 2.5 hour test-ride marathon (thanks to the Yale Ave REI employees for helping me through all that), and kept coming back to this one. I've made a few modifications, including removing the co-op decal (personal preference) and converting over to tubeless. The tires come tube-less ready, but I had to re-tape the wheel in order to get a good seal; not sure why the original taping came off so easily. All in all, I've had a great time riding this on everything from fire roads to dirt trails and single-track in the forest. My friend who is *super* into mountain biking took a look and was really surprised at the quality of the materials and components in this price range.
Has been great. In two years nothing has broken or come out of adjustment. The 1x12 is great for climbing. New knobby tires are being installed. The stock tires Rekon are ok for smooth green trails but not good for blue or black rooty rocky trails. It's specs are similar to the Roscoe. Thru maxles are awesome not cheap skewers.
After doing plenty of research and comparing the DRT 1.3 with several similar bikes from different leading brands, I decided to go purchase a size large frame. This bike is a beast especially with the 29" wheels and feels super solid and stable especially during high speed descents. The rear shifting is crisp and reliable and the geometry makes climbs more user friendly. I'm very please with this ride plus, if you are an REI member, you get the warranty and discounted service. Pretty hard to beat!
I’m a long time, 72 yr old road bike guy from Portland. After 5 years in Vegas I decided to try my hand at mountain biking and see what all the fuss is about with the plethora of trails in the valley and surrounding mountains. The Co-Op Dirt 1.3 (gotta love the name) was my first and only mountain bike purchase. I may be a novice in the dirt but I know a great bike when I ride one! This thing rocks (excuse the pun) I love everything about it and will keep it forever or something close to forever. I have a $6,000 carbon fiber road bike but this aluminum beast is now my true love. Great job, REI!
Satisfied with this build! I wanted to add a hardtail to my collection of bikes to use on the singletrack trails at my property and have no regrets. Components are solid but I'll probably upgrade a few things down the road.
Great bike for the money (got on sale for 20% off). A lot to like at this price point - 1 x 12 Shimano Deore, RockShox air fork with lockout, hydraulic brakes, dropper post, and tubeless ready tires. I had REI perform the tubeless conversion while purchasing which is well worth the money. Threw some OneUp pedals on it and have been very happy.
Frankly, I just love this thing. It may not be the perfect status item for people who want to brag about spending fifteen million dollars for the right this or that component...but I do not care. I moved up from a semi-cheap bike from Dick's, and I am glad to be rid of that store and that bike and those people. This bike just works, and it suits me, and it is my friend.
I love this bike! Today may be the third time I haven’t ridden since picking this beast up! I believe that was over three months ago and I don’t even consider myself an avid rider. Good times
I opted for this bike over the sub $500 bikes because I knew I would immediately want a few upgrades. I was very pleased that this was 20% off due to a customer return, and it was flawless. I love the Deore 1x12 gear set, dropper seat, and Rapidfire XT shifter. I have had it on 4 trails now and it handles great for a hard tail. I'm not even thinking about upgrades yet, which was my goal. There are more "name brand" bikes for a little less that I found, but they didn't have the same features and quality components. Most have the Suntour XCM coil fork, which is pretty cheap.
Very good bike for my son love it also.
