How to Choose Knives and Tools

Pockets don't have infinite space. Fortunately, the Gerber Zilch folding knife consumes almost none of it with its slender, lightweight construction.

The overall weight is nice and light, and fairly slim in the pocket. The blade has a good grind and blade shape, and feels slicey and not too thick behind the edge. Came very sharp out of the box. The stonewashed finish looks attractive to me, and the blade billboarding is unobtrusive and tasteful. The handle texturing is good and feels secure in the hand. There are steel liners nested under the handles, which seems like a good choice-- very little flex and more contouring of the handle. Nice full grip for the small size and fairly neutral, but the pocket clip is badly positioned for my hands and was digging into my palm severely. Right side, tip up only, and the giant "GERBER" billboarding on the clip I could do without. Maybe next time just have the shield logo on there instead? The handle felt much nicer with the pocket clip removed, but I partially stripped one of the screws getting it off. Fit and finish is good overall. The lockup is perfectly centered on mine, blade is centered, the pivot is smooth, and the detent feels about right, although it can be opened by flinging the blade downward hard enough (is that still a thing people worry about?), so I can't recommend taking this into NYC. One-handed opening and closing with the thumb studs is easily doable, and one can even flick it open with the back of your nail with a bit of leverage. The nail nick/crud groove doesn't do much for me, though. It can also be opened one-handed that way if you felt like removing the thumb studs, but the thumb studs are behind the plunge grind and reasonably out of the way, so I would see no reason to do this aside from taking them off to use on a sharpening stone. I suspect that groove is just going to collect gunk on mine instead, so personally I would have preferred it without that. Similarly, the aggressive zig-zag pattern in the back between the handles is a strange aesthetic choice for what I would have hoped for a more understated look, but that's their prerogative. Overall, a good knife for the price.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] First thing first, the knife comes in a super nice package, which took me a while to even get it out. Be cautious that the knife is sharp, use a scissors to cut the package! This is a super sharp knife, very handy on my upcoming camping trips. It is very lightweight and fits perfectly in my palm as you can see in the picture. Only thing is it's quite hard to open and close the knife by one hand, or it was just me amateur handling a pocket knife Ovetall, very sharp, lightweight and easy to carry around.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was gifted a Gerber brand Zilch- Black knife for my honest review and opinion from Influenster. This knife is primarily used as an EDC (everyday carry knife).I let my husband review it as he uses an EDC. HIs review “The long thin blade is great for getting into hard to reach spots, the ambidextrous blade is perfect for when my other hand is busy, and the ease of flipping it open is light and quick. When I need my knife, I need it NOW. This knife fits the bill perfectly. The light weight and durability is amazing for the price which I checked online. I’ve dropped it many times. It doesn’t seem to wear at all! The clip does seem to loosen over time.”
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product free in exchange for my honest review. The Gerber Zilch knife in black is super sharp and lightweight. It's easy to carry around on a regular basis because it's not bulky and has a pocket clip. The knife once open, locks into place and is easy to fold back up. It didn't have a way to lock while folded up, which I wish it did. Great use for opening packages or cutting anything little. This is a good knife for someone who wants just a simple pocket knife.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] If you're looking for a lightweight, very well made knife that is budget friendly, then look no further. I was looking for a budget EDC that I can put through the ringer and not feel bad that it cost $$$. This one fits the bill perfectly. Super light weight, sharp, and well made. Very impressed! Gerber did a great job with this one! Love the color as well!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was sent the Gerber Zilch to review. This is a very lightweight pocketknife with about a 3" blade. The housing is very light and feels a little cheap to me maybe. However, the knife cuts well and is handy. My husband and I use it to cut open boxes at home.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this gerber zilch black pocket knife for free from Influenster to give my review and honest opinion. This knife is so sleek and smooth. I love the size of it and it’s easy to use and carry. I would recommend this definitely.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This knife is perfect for my needs! It’s lightweight, compact and the textured grip doesn’t make it feel slippery. I love the pocket clip feature, it makes for easier finding when working. This is the perfect addition to my first kit!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Wow! This Gerber knife is insane! So sharp and extremely high quality! Its incredible! Cuts through things like its paper including paper! This is a MUST BUY! Gerber is an awesome brand! Very portable and versatile!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a good cheap starter pocket knife, but there are a few things that can be improved upon - especially if you are comparing it to other knives in the same price range like Civivi. The biggest issue in the pocket clip only having one location it can be attached. If you want a tip down position you are out of luck. The pocket clip is also uncomfortable in the hand if holding the knife with a firm grip. I am going to opt for no pocket clip as this knife will exist in my toolbox. Then again, this might be better used for peeling/cutting apples. The blade is passable as sharp out of the box and could definitely use a quick sharpening. I suspect that the blade will need regular sharpening because of the type of steel used. On the bright side this is an easy steel to sharpen. The scales feel like a plastic material that should hold up well over time.
