Bought new but was sold used product
I haven't tried the Union Force Classic binding yet but I will say I just received them and I'm not too thrilled with REI. Upon opening the binding they appear to be used. There is minimal wear on the under side of the left binding and all of the mounting screws are used an corroded. This was suppose to be a new product but clearly it must've been a return that was used and resold.
my go-to for decades
I got my first pair in 2008 -- 15 years ago now, and am only now getting my second pair (because the foam in the footbed has finally cracked off). i've ridden these bindings as my daily driver on both a park board and a pow board on 3 continents with endless smiles, pow, hardpack, chunder, greens, blues, blacks, and whatever colors they use in europe. i've ridden with these bindings as a beginner, and now consider myself reasonably advanced. these bindings shred. full stop. they're just so darn responsive - every time i accidently have to rent because my bag doesn't show up somewhere, i realize how much i love these things. there's a reason they're a classic - because they simply hit every condition you throw at them. as soon as my kids can shred, these are the bindings i'll be getting them as well.
Solid Bindings
Was riding Union Forces from 2011-2012, and I am very happy with this new purchase. Definitely worth the upgrade.
Great and affordable
Great bindings at a great price point. The ratchets are awesome as well and feel like if you get your strap even remotely nearby, it's picking it up and ratcheting it in. Minus 1 star for a very miniscule flaw, but one that could ruin your day on the mountain. The top buckle's strap has these 2 small pieces that slide into the rest of the assembly. These can become undone from the strap altogether and without them, you're unable to tighten the top strap. UNION, why in the world did you design them with these 2 subtle, but crucial pieces??!!
They do the job
Did about 20 days on these so far this year and quality-wise they seem to be holding up just fine. I don't like the way the highback rotation adjustment works. I think other brands do a better job with this, but once it's done it's done for the most part unless you are mucking around with your feet angles all the time. This is a personal point, but I really don't like the feel of the buckles when strapping in. Something about it just kinda feels cheap. I thought they might break in after a while and feel a bit better, but it hasn't happened yet. For the positives, these feel really good. Very responsive and comfy for an all day ride. I like the screwdriver-free adjustments for both straps. Also, if you are one of those who doesn't bring extra ladder straps to the hill and have a breakage, most shops carry Union replacements. I personally wouldn't get these again, but I was on a budget and these do the job.
Great bindings, but would not fit size 14+ boot
I switched bindings from XL Ride Rodeos to these size Large Union bindings (Union only makes up to Large). After setup and testing my boots in them I realized the toe strap is not long enough to fit a size 14+ size boot, even when you adjust to the longest setting. Just a watch out in case anyone has huge feet like myself! Bummed, but otherwise great looking binding and I love the space them. (FYI, I have Burton ION boas size 14)
Best bindings
These bindings are incredible, I started with Flow Alphas thinking the speed entry would be nice but I sacrificed feel so I switched to these and am never going back. The comfort and feel of these is incredible. Zero complaints.
worst customer service experience
Product broke after little over year of use, or of warranty. Little disappointing but went to manufacturer and had terrible experience with union. Thankfully REI is rock solid so was able to get a replacement but I will never buy another pair of union bindings again after the treatment I experienced. Bindings were nice and stable until minimal wear degraded strap.
Less than ideal
Ride well. Clasps froze up repeatedly in less than ideal conditions. Really frustrating to lose so much time with bindings popping loose or just not engaging.
Size Mislabeled
Ordered these Union Force Classic bindings online from REI in size Large which is supposed to fit my US men’s size 11 boots. Received the package and the sticker on the box says Large, just as I ordered. However, after opening up the bindings the markings engraved on the footplate say XL. There are no other markings besides this indicating the size. They seem to fit my size 11 boots ok so it makes me think they are actually size Large, as it would be obvious that XL are too big. Why are the bindings marked as XL? It’s very confusing. I originally went to return these in person at an REI location because I thought they must have accidentally put XL bindings in the Large box mistakenly. I swapped them out for another pair, and it was the same thing: Size Large box with bindings marked as XL inside. I thought I must be crazy. I looked up the FAQs at Union’s website on how to identify binding size, and they say the size will be marked on the underside of the footplate just as I am describing. So why do they say XL? Since these do seem to fit as a Large, I believe the factory may have mistakenly printed XL on these when in fact they are Large. Weird experience. Other than that, bindings seem fine but haven’t had a chance to use them yet on the mountain.
