Good for shoes. But maybe not boots
Stinky

I bought this to keep dirt and muck off my clothes when I put my hiking boots in my duffle bag. It's a great solution for low cut shoes and maybe smaller hiking boots. But my boots didn't fit. My boots are Danner Mountain Lights, which are big, heavy, chunky boots. So a smaller lightweight hiker might work. But this also didn't fit my Oboz Bridgers either, so I think any boot might be a struggle. The REI-CoOP Large Expanding Travel Cube actually works much better and is much easier to get the boots into, so I'll just stick with that. The Expanding Travel Cube allows me to lay the boots flat, which actually makes packing easier. This has a nice ventilation window, but for ventilation, I just keep a zipper partially open.

Dirt remains an issue

I don't know if I just pack shoes differently than other folks, but this product doesn't address my needs. When I'm packing shoes, I have two main concerns. Dirt getting on the rest of my stuff, and shoe stink permeating the suitcase. This product is a well-built bag, but with a mesh panel that fails to contain odor or mud, so neither of those needs are met. If my shoes are outside of the suitcase and airing out, they don't need to be in a bag, so I'm just not sure why there's mesh! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here, which is hopefully true so the rest of you get a product you want, but for me this doesn't work. For the record, I received this bag for free through the REI Advisors program. If I had known there was a mesh panel, I would have asked for something else.

Perfect for carrying boots outside my backpack

I needed a bag to carry hiking boots and/or trail shoes outside my pack, so I don’t get the stuff in my pack dirty. And this bag is perfect for that! I attach it to my pack with small carabiners. It fits my size 9 hiking boots with enough additional room for a pair of flip flops or even a jacket. I will use the bag to add extra storage when using my 20 liter day pack on longer hikes. There is a handle on the top of the bag for easy carrying of dirty shoes—which will be handy when I just need to grab my boots and go!

Heavy duty shoe bag

I always use packing cubes to organize when I travel and love the idea of having something heavier duty for when I bring my hiking shoes. For size reference, this bag fit my women's 9.5 Targhee mid hiking boots no problem and kept them separated nicely from my other gear. One note, if you put dirty shoes inside the mesh will allow some dirt to escape the bag. The side cinches are a great idea, but they are placed on the bag such that you can only cinch high profiles shoes like hiking boots or a couple of tennis shoes stacked together. I found that it will not cinch lower profile shoes like flats so I am likely to only bring this for my adventure trips, not business travel. Would be nicer if it were dual purpose.

Bad design for intended use

I am very confused about this design. While well made, there is a mesh section that means dirt and smells will not be contained. I want a shoe bag i can throw in my backpack and not worry abouy my clothes getting wet and dirty. The design is the same as just throwing my wet shoes into my clean clothes. I will be returning this item. Would have been nice if the pictures had been better so people can see this is not a closed bag.

Versatile and Durable

This has been a versatile and durable bag for travel. The mesh panel allows for air to escape when you're rolling the top, as well as for shows or clothes to dry and not stink. This bag is quite large, it can easily fit 4+ pairs of small shoes (sandals and flip flops), or 2-3 pairs of normal shoes. I would have preferred if this was a bit smaller, since I feel it's a bit overkill for 2 pairs of shoes. I also used this as a dirty clothes bag. It's surprisingly large size works well for this purpose.

So good for minimalist travelers!

I absolutely have LOVED this shoe bag for travel! I spend lots of time on the road, and this bag allows me to separate my dirty, stinky hiking boots from my one other pair of shoes I bring. Totally a game changer!

Nice bag, but not sure it's a needed item

The REI shoe bag is made with good quality - nice material, solid clips - it seems very durable. If you are packing shoes into luggage it works well for that so your clothes are not laying against your shoes. However, while the mesh portion of the bag is nice to allow air flow to the shoes, if the shoes have dirt in them (like hikers for example), the dirt can fall through the mesh and into your clothes. As long as the shoes are clean it will work fine. I tried the shoe bag as a stand alone carrying shoes to the gym. It worked fine, though there is not a handle on the bag making it a little awkward to carry. I'm not sure you are really gaining anything by putting the shoes in a separate shoe bag to carry on their own. Overall it's a nice little bag, but I probably wouldn't go out and buy it as I don't see it as a travel necessity.

Shoe bag I didn’t know I needed!

I didn’t really know how much I needed this until I got one. Great for traveling & gym shoes. I’m able to fit my hiking boots in them & store them. Love the mesh section that allows for shoes to air out. Seems durable.
