Just what I was looking for
These are just as described. Like a gore-tex shell for your hands! My hands often get too sweaty in regular gloves, so these have been great for spring skiing, wet hikes, and rainy bikepacking trips. They pair really well with the rei merino wool liner gloves for added warmth and layering.
Small. Not to be worn for a whole day in the snow
I purchased the extra large and they are only eight inches long. I have average size hands and with my wool mittens on I my hand barely fit into the mittens. These would be great for playing with your children in the snow for a few hours but do not buy these if you plan on spending the day, such as snowshoeing, in the snow. These hang about an inch to two inches below my wrist so if you fall in the snow the snow will get inside the mittens. I am going to purchase mittens that are at least 12 inches top to bottom so they will extend far enough to cover my coat (These are too short to do that) so I know snow will not get into where my hands are.
Nice mitten shells - lightweight + waterproof
Just standard mittens that work as claimed. There is maybe enough room in the mitten to fit a very thin liner glove on while wearing the shells for more warmth and better feel if you order the size you would use for normal everyday work gloves. If you want to use these for winter as well, and want to add some thick insulation, you will need to size 1-2 sizes above normal for enough room. These mittens are not sized to take winter insulation liners, but could work if you wear a medium normally and could use an XL with insulation in the winter. I find the velcro wrist cinch is a little annoying to get a grip on it to peel up when wearing them. I would also prefer it to be on the other side of the hand, but not a big deal.
saved my hands!!
Wore these on the PCT and on the colder days/rainy days and they were amazing. They absolutely saved my hands in the cold and wet PNW weather. Even when hiking through an atmospheric river in the northern cascades, they were absolutely soaked and they kept the water on the inside warm and my hands were warm (like a wetsuit). Totally recommend these to anyone hiking through rain/cold weather. My hands usually get pretty cold easily, but these gloves really helped them stay warm. These gloves + wool gloves were a perfect combo.
Fantastic gear!
Best piece of winter have gear I've ever purchased. They keep my hands dry and comfortable on their own when scrambling on icy rock. Great for layering over gloves. Just wish they offered XXL so they could fit over my thick wool mittens (I wear L normally). I'd recommend sizing up once for comfort over gloves and twice for thick mittens. I can still use them on their own even though I sized up. They do trap sweat so only use when you need a wind layer or might spend a lot of time putting your hands on ice.
So far so good
I hate wearing thick gloves due to the lack of dexterity, so I usually find myself in liners. Wanted something I could layer over them to add warmth, and keep my gloves dry. These fit the bill, adding considerable warm when needed, and when removed allow me to perform fine tasks without completely exposing my hands. These are for putting in miles on the trail and keeping you warm/dry when the most your hands are expected to do is hold trekking poles or grab a water bottle. Anything more than that I’m taking them off. Sizing: My hands are a smidge over 8” around the knuckles. I usually wear medium gloves in everything, and can occasionally get away with a small glove. I bought these in large. Not only to accommodate layering, but also to make them easier to take on and off. They fit perfectly. Just enough room I don’t have to wrestle them off or on, but not so much room my hand is swimming in them. I can use them standalone (not sure why you would) but would prefer a smaller size in that scenario. Sizing guide is accurate, but keep in mind what purpose you’re buying them for Weight: My size large were 1.7 oz for the pair per my scale. If you’re a hardcore ultralighter you could maybe shave a gram or two cutting off the buckle and interior tags, but your likely not using these either. Grip seems to be adequate for the purpose. Let’s be real, they’re mittens, you shouldn’t be expecting these to provide outstanding grip nor should you be expecting heavy duty. Can’t comment on durability, but I see no reason these would fail during intended use. They’re not work gloves, they’d likely fail miserably if treated as such. Warmth: you really can’t rate warmth on these as they’re dependent on a separate insulting layer. They do notably boost warmth of that layer however
Didn't work as expected
These mittens were a big disappointment and I will be returning them after taking them on a 7-day hike. I purchased based on lots of reviews and was optimistic that they would work well for me. They didn’t. Here are 4 problems with them: • They are too short (not the size, but the overall length). They are not long enough to easily fit under the cuff of a raincoat nor over the raincoat cuff. • The fabric is quite stiff. I wasn’t able to even pull my rain hood up or down wearing the mittens. • The Velcro closure seemed to get stuck on everything. • They are not large enough to fit liner gloves or mittens beneath them. I ordered a size Large (I am a woman with larger hands) and really struggled to add the additional layer inside them. If your only criteria is weight, then perhaps these will work for you because they are lightweight. They did keep my hands dry, but my wrists got wet!
Watch for the velcro hooks on wrist tabs
I visited a store recently and almost bought these as overmitts for liner gloves. They are simple and fit well over my liners. What changed my mind was the velcro wrist cinch tabs. The velcro hooks on the tabs grabbed onto my liner glove tips and almost ripped the liner glove fabric as I tried to remove the mitts. This happened twice in a few moments and that was enough.
my dreams were answered!
My hands and fingers and finicky when it comes to cool weather activities. I have a variety of gloves and mittens and was looking for a simple waterproof mitt that I could mix and match with liner gloves and mittens for varying conditions in the mountains or even just walking the dog. These fit the bill. They have been wonderful so far for a variety of cool conditions! I’m a size small for most gloves and that probably would have worked for the mittens too but I decided to size up and I’m glad I did. The small might have been fine but the extra wiggle room in the gloves will ensure I’m not restrict blood flow to my finger. Be warned that means these for me a little bulky, I’m not going to be doing much fine motor skills with my hands in these, but the point is to keep my hands warm and dry and I’m so happy with these!
Works for me
I use these with a pair of woolen mittens. Wool is great but it wreaks havoc with velcro - and my ski poles all have velcro in the straps. These Gore Tex mitts repel moisture and wind, and they keep the wool away from the velcro. I've suffered from cold hands for many years and have tried many options - this solution works best for me (I also put hand warmers in the wool mittens.) Forget gloves - mitts are the way to go if you have chronically cold hands.
