Great pant for climbing/hiking/running. Love the ability to convert to shorts for a run or hike and make pants again when the weather is colder or you just don't want to scratch your legs. The only reason I am not giving these a 5 star review is because you can feel the stitching around the zipper on the inside of the pants. OR has done an excellent job to make this as comfortable as possible by including a sleeve that protects your skin from directly touching the stitching. Though, because you can still feel the protruding stitching when you walk/run I worry that on longer hikes/approaches this might lead to chaffing.
I've been wearing Ferrosi pants for a view years, but I wanted a pair of convertibles, so I tried the Equinox. After a month of wearing them, I must say I prefer these pants to the Ferrosi. The material is slightly stiffer and less stretchy than the Ferrosi, which makes for a better look, but the performance is still very decent for an outdoor pant. Great for hiking, not as good for activities where that dynamic Ferrosi stretch is required. The zippered legs work fine and the zipper slider is cleverly hidden. I wear a 34" inseam in the Ferrosi, which is a hair too long, but the Equinox fit me great in the 32".
These pants are very comfortable, functional, lightweight with easy to remove leg bottoms. I cannot attest as to their durability as I have only worn them twice. The sizing is very accurate. I like them very much so why only 4 stars? 1. There is no lightweight belt included anymore. The drawstring is not a good replacement for the belt. It is not only difficult to find a quality lightweight belt but it is another expense which is like a price increase. Please include a decent belt in the future and these would be 5 stars. 2. There are only 3 colors to choose from. Overall these are very nice quality pants and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a convertible hiking pant.
I am a Whitewater Raft guide in Northern California, I have been wearing these pants and the Astroman shirt while on the river instead of getting burned or slathering on gobs of sunscreen. The old style of these and the new version work great for this is they are lightweight, stretchy and dry very quickly. My only complaint about these as while there are belt loops they don't come with a belt like the old ones did. May seem minor but another thing to buy, and keep track of, not to mention any belts you buy will be much thicker and not dry out as quickly as the thin belts of the old pants.
These are definitly my go-to hiking pants. They're lightweight, comfortable, and breathable. They are a bit tighter in the thighs than the ferrosi pants but I've come to like the "fitted" style. The pockets are nice and deep as well. After wearing them through streams, rain, and snow, they do a pretty good job at repelling water as well. Some of the stitching on the back pocket came undone after a few trips to the backcountry, probably from sitting on rocks. Easy fix though. They're about as durable as they can be given the lightweight material. Overall, I really love these pants.
So I stupidly lost the bottom half of these pants on my first trip with then. They don't sell them separately, but they offered me a half off voucher for a new pair. Top notch customer service and a really great pair of pants. Definitely the best pair of convertible pants I have ever tried on. (I tried to submit a review a few times on my laptop, and just did it again through email, but it it prompted me to do it again, soooo, I would say get your tech guy to make this easier. My review would have been submitted ocer a month ago. This is my last go at it. M)
These pants are so amazing no matter what you are doing. They are stylish And refined enough To wear to work and rugged enough for multi day backpacking trips!! I can prove each statement because I have worn them doing both!! I love these pants! The waste snap is an awesome upgrade from other snaps and the zippered legs are so we're designed I don't think twice to zip them off. The construction is solid and the sizing is accurate. I have two pair Currently and I plan on getting a couple more soon! These pants will not disappoint!!
These run true to size in waist and length. I have other zip-offs from other brands and this one is the most unique b/c of how it zips off. It zips in a spiral around the leg which has material below the zipper. The other strange thing is that when unzipped, you can see the zipper midway b/n the waist and bottom of the (now) short. Also, the width/girth of the short legs themselves are a bit narrow and hug the legs a bit which tends to pull while hiking. I like them though and they will find a way in my hiking gear.
I really wanted to love these pants and they do some things well. The conversion is nice and well thought out. The fabric is cool and perfect for hot and humid weather. But, I cannot recommend them because the threaded seams on the pants and shorts pull out extremely easily. These are supposed to be outdoor pants, it's even in the brand name. Within two days of wearing them the threads started pulling out around the hems and pockets. If you walk through briars, the briars don't impact the pant fabric but will pull the thread seams out constantly. It's really a terrible design for an outdoor pant. I carry a pocket knife in my pocket and even the clip started pulling threads immediately upon wearing them. This hasn't happened on any other pants I wear, even much cheaper pairs. I expect more from Outdoor research and was very disappointed.
I love these pants. The design of the zip-off legs is different than all the others I have seen. When you are wearing them as shorts, they don't feel like convertible pants that end in a zippered hem. When you take off your boots, the legs zip open AND the fabric is stretchy! I love the pocket on the thigh, it is zippered and holds a cell phone handily. The pockets on the pants are large enough to hold a map as you hike down the trail. I love it. Down sides? Yes a couple. The zippers on the legs could be color coded or have something that lets you know which leg goes to which zipper. The drawstring in the pants (I tend to lose weight hiking) was really short and hard to tie. That's all. Buy these convertibles if you want something better. I plan on buying another. I wore these pants backpacking in the Wind River Range for 8 days in August.
