Outdoor Research  Whitefish Hat

I bought this hat a year ago and love it. It keeps me warm in cold (single digit/negative? (F)) weather because it fits so snugly around my face that the wind can't cut through. I think the mask is stupid, but I've been glad to use it a couple of times when things get really cold. The hat fits snugly all the way down the back of the head and the ears and chin are well protected in an such a well designed way that I dont have to worry about keeping the thing adjusted just right to keep myself covered. You can configure it for different conditions with the straps and the buttons, and the brim is able to sit up and out of the way. The hat is thin enough you can put your hood up for extra protection. My main worry is that the buttons will fail eventually, but so far no problem.

I had been getting by with either a simple “ear flap” cap - good for cool but not cold - or a heavy-duty “Hey Hoser” winter headgear - great for those really low-temp days but way too warm otherwise (wool skullcaps/beanies just don’t make it in wind). This one hits the perfect midpoint, covering my ears and a bit of cheek, not to mention my skull, in luxurious fluff. Plus I get a bill, which helps to shield my eyes from direct sun in the day and street/headlights when it’s dark out, and a wraparound face mask that tucks away in the earflap. The only nit I would pick (not worth a star off) is that the chin snaps are rather small, so there is a bit of a learning curve to line them up to snap together on the first try.

I love this hat for its versatility and features. the plush fleece is toasty and all the earflap configurations ensure that I'm comfortable as the weather changes. The DWR keeps the hat dry in light precipitation. Love how the brim folds in half for stuffing, or how I can use the snaps to secure it to the outside of my pack. Basically the perfect hat for any winter conditions. Runs small though, so size up!

I love the look and function of this hat. It looks great and offers quite a bit of flexibility with respect to the temperature range in which it works. I haven't used the "mask" yet, but imagine it'll come in handy when out on winter walks with my toddler and when running errands in the mandated mask age of COVID-19. The only thing that prevents me from giving a 5-star rating is that the Fleece can get a little itchy on the forehead when temperatures rise and a little sweat starts to form; a brushed fleece headband likely would have worked better in this regard. That said, I still think the Whitefish Hat was a great purchase and I will certainly wear it regularly through the late fall and winter months.

I’ve had this hat for around 4 years and it’s just phenomenal!! I use it for backpacking hunting fishing and skiing! Only complaint is the buttons can be difficult to snap, especially with gloves on. But they’re tight and that’s a plus! I’m Gonna get another one👏🏼

My new favorite hat for the colder days. This hat is windproof, has excellent ear coverage, is decently warm, I'd say good to 0s-10s if active 20s if sedentary, YMMV. One of my favorite features is the bill which folds in half, making this the most packable, hat with a bill I've yet to own, this thing easily fits into a jacket pocket taking up much less room then a traditional billed hat.

A real find, a hat big enough for a larger than average head. Good construction and material selection combined with thoughtful design. The integrated ear flaps with face cover for very cold and or windy days is a real positive addition. The generous sizing allows the easy addition/use of a Buff for those really cold times. It has improved my comfort during these January mornings.

Great winter hat! Waterproof and warm. I've worn it on some very long, cold, wet and windy days this winter, with very little activity, and it kept my head and neck warm the whole time. The ear flaps snap securely on top when not in use and the brim is long enough to keep the rain off your face but not so long that it obstructs your field of view.

The daily utility and simple styling of this hat are excellent. It is comfortable and warm and protects my head well when the temperatures are below 0° C. (It is time to stop clinging to impractical units of temperature such as Fahrenheit and Kelvin, don't you think? As some one else put it Celsius makes the most sense.) I am not yet commenting on durability because I have had the hat for just a couple of months. With good care, I predict that it would last a few years. I hope OR would keep this product for a long time.
