Poor quality, pocket ripped after just 2 weeks
After just 2 weeks one of the pockets ripped. Very disappointed as I thought I finally found a good quality jacket. The pockets are placed in an odd position where your arms are pulling down on the sides of the pockets. Would not recommend this jacket
Impressed!
Impressed! The Patagonia Downdrift kept me warm and dry in 30 degree weather and a heavy snowfall in Flagstaff while hiking. The attached hood fits perfect and is so wind resistant it actually muffles your hearing a bit. I'm 5'8 and 175 with a dad-bod and the large fit me perfectly. I usually have trouble with sleeves being too long but these are perfect for my usual 32" length. I am confident this jacket can handle even colder temps as it easily kept me warm at 30 degrees with nothing but a t-shirt underneath. I would definitely recommend the Downdrift and this is one I am going to keep for years to come!
Pleased with the jacket so far!
I bought the medium size after returning a different style jacket that wasn't warm enough. At 5'8"/160#s it fits great. I am able to wear layers underneath without the jacket becoming too tight. I haven't tested it out in super cold weather yet but it feels much warmer than the Isthmus parka I had before. The hood is warm and fits very snuggly. 2 complaints I have are: 1 The sleeve holes don't have snaps to tighten, only elastic. Snaps or Velcro would be better. 2. The hand warmer pockets at an angle are kinda annoying. It would be better if they were side access pockets instead of the diagonal direction they are.
Greatest Purchase I’ve Ever Made
Well-constructed and sturdy jacket that’ll keep you warm possibly below zero with a couple layers underneath. Wore it with a long sleeve thermal layer and dress shirt in 10 deg weather and I was very warm. I’m 5’9”, 170 and I ordered a large since medium was out of stock, but it honestly fits perfectly fine. I believe it’s water-resistant, not waterproof, but light snow or rain doesn’t get absorbed into the fabric. Knowing the lifetime guarantee I have with Patagonia gear, I’m glad to know I’ll have this jacket for basically the rest of my life.
Great Jacket, But Colors are Waaaaay Off
The jacket itself (fit, finish, quality of construction) are Patagonia's usual top-notch, but the colors are nothing like they appear online! I checked on multiple devices, and it has nothing to do with screen quality / accuracy. I tried both the gold and Sisu Brown, and neither are close to what appears on the site. Will try to post a pic of the latter to illustrate; basically, the Sisu (shown online as a deep, rich, rust brown) is actually pale terracotta / dusty rose in real life. Back to the drawing board; hope to have better luck with the green one!
Choose Wisely...
It took me three tries, but I finally got a color that works (the dark green is "as advertised"). The other two -- the gold and particularly, the brown -- are pretty far off what appears on the website. Sisu Brown arrived in dusty rose / terra cotta; not even close to the rust/brick/deep brown color depicted. The gold was just a little brighter than depicted, but enough that it didn't work for me. The jacket itself is super well-made, toasty warm, and true to size. Subtracting a star for the 2 trips I had to make to the post office, but as always, RIE CS reps are the best!
very warm but not water repellent
This coat is boxy and feels a bit like walking around in sleeping bag on your upper body. The pros: it is warm, and stepping out into freezing temperatures in this is easy. Paired with a layer underneath it is warm down to 0. I like that it's just a bit long, so it keeps my butt warm too. The cons: it is not for any type of activity, as it gets so hot and then there is no good plan for any sweat. And, the jacket is at best lightly water resistant, so in a rain or snow mix or any kind of wetness this jacket is useless. The pockets are also cut open at the top, so everything in them gets completely soaked (ruined my phone and had to replace my phone after walking for twenty minutes in some rain). Because this coat doesn't stand up when it's wet I will be returning it.
Outstandingly warm
Wore this in 25* and 11* weather in Detroit with just a t-shirt and I was not cold at all. Unexpectedly, the pockets were able to keep my hands warm, no gloves.
Warm and comfortable
I wanted a winter jacket that would be warm on early, dawn patrol walks and one that didn't need three or four under layers to get the job done. This jacket nailed it. Took walk on 25-degree (F) morning this week with just a t-shirt and long sleep polo under the jacket and was toasty. With light sweater, I believe the jacket will stand up to the teens. Great product by a socially responsible company.
Toasty and comfortable!
This jacket is amazing! Very comfortable, lightweight but very toasty. I wore it tonight in a windchill of 28 degrees Fahrenheit with just a t-shirt underneath and felt comfortable (not too hot and sweaty, but not cold). I can believe with a fleece layer underneath this would keep me warm down closer to single digit temps. I'm 5'9" and 220lbs (all in my torso) and the XL fits slightly loose. I can comfortably fit a thick layer underneath. The pockets and hood kept my hands and head comfortable too.
