mid-layer for snow or outer layer for milder temps
We love this puffer. It’s not as thick as some others, which made it perfect as a mid-layer underneath a snow suit for skiing and winter conditions, meanwhile acting as an outer for milder temps such as cooler days in San Francisco
Great Lightweight Jacket.
I got this jacket for my 11y/o who hates to wear jackets. He has been loving this jacket. Solid fit, lightweight and very versatile. Not a very thick jacket but able to keep him warm up here in the Pacific NW. We have taken the jacket mountain biking, hiking, and camping. Easy to back. Seems to fit closer to the smaller side. He's not very big and fits him just right for size 11/12.
Absolutely best jacket. Instant repurchase.
I first bought this coat for my son in 2021 when he was 5. Let me tell you, we just bought his second one now and he’s 8. I love this coat. I always buy a size up so there is space for him to grow and can comfortably fit a sweatshirt or something heavy underneath. This coat is his go-to when he doesn’t need his big parka. It is still in great condition even with him beating it up and wearing it all the time. We live in CT and winters here can be either blizzards constantly or mild/wet, and this has been the perfect purchase. Cheaper than the Patagonia, north face, and other big names brands, but works better. Way more bang for your buck. Thank you REI for always making the best coats and well priced for how amazing they are. You’ve gained a loyal customer.
Womens version is better quality
I bought a women’s small and kids x-large to compare (they’re about the same size, but the women’s jacket has longer sleeves and, obviously, a more feminine shape). The biggest practical difference is that the women’s jacket has more down in it and is warmer. I started heating up pretty quickly while trying it on in the house, but not so much with the kids’ version. The women’s version is puffier. Also, the women’s version has two interior pockets and the kids’ has one (I noticed the updated kids jacket now has two). The women’s version has an elastic drawcord around the hem, which the kids’ jacket doesn’t have. These are the most important differences I noticed, with the difference in warmth being the biggest deal to me, personally.
Maybe quality control issue?
I have the toddler version of this jacket and it was great. Kept my daughter warm, and lasted many washes. I just got this one, and it has basically no down in it. Not sure if its a quality control issue, or this is how its supposed to be. For $80 and an REI product (my wife and i have the adult version of this jacket and its awesome, and i have been shopping there for 20 years), i was very disappointed. I'm returning it, and getting her something else.
Very Thin! Where's the Down???
I was initially surprised at how thin this was when it came in. We could not detect much filling in the baffles at all, but figured we'd give it a few days to puff up. The collar and cuffs have filled in a little after a week, but none of the body and sleeves have, even after manually "fluffing". They may use 650 down, but the question is how much? Almost none. Would not recommend REI products after this. I've bought multiple LLBean down coats and parkas and all have been very lofty and warm in super cold temps.
Great jacket
Wonderfully well made down jacket. Bought off clearance rack so pleased with price. Not able to speak to warmth as grandson will wear this winter. Label mentions repurposed polyester which is great.
Great buy!
Really comfortable jacket! Super lightweight as well. I was able to pack it in my backpack and not feel an ounce of the weight. I usually use it with a hoodie under and it keeps me super warm!
Great versatile jacket for fall and beyond.
We used this jacket for my 6 year old daughter. The size 8 was a little big but fit well with plenty of room to grow into. It was primarily used for cool nights and cold restaurants. The jacket did well at regulating temperature while not getting overly warm. Anytime we leave the house, even when almost 100 degrees the coat has to come with us. It has held up well through 6 weeks of daily use, mostly inside, and has held up to being thrown around the car and from nah to bag. Love that the inside tag has multiple places to write who the coat belongs too. Cute touch that I think will be able to be filled out to completion.
First Version Was Better
We purchased this jacket two years ago and my son loved it. However, we just purchased a second one (of the same color) and are noticing a few downgrades. While these are mainly visual details, it has an impact on the overall look and feel of the jacket. The interior of the first version had a contrasting interior and zipper which made it really attractive. The exterior was red and interior and zipper was maroon. The new one has the same color interior and exterior. The hook on the old jacket was a sturdy woven material in several colors. The new one is a plain ribbon material in red. There was a reflective stripe on the zipper pull on the new one is red. Kids can have a keen aesthetic awareness even when they are 5, 6, 7, 8 etc. I assume REI is trying to build brand loyalty. (even with youngsters) It would be wise to keep things beautiful and cool in the future.
