Wore these on an overnight backpacking trip on the AT up in NC. They worked very well in temps of 50F down to the mid 30s. Comfortable fit, easy to step over blowdowns, etc. Great pockets and long length in size R keeps ankles warm when sitting down to cook dinner. Waist size runs a little large. Everything is really great except for the snap closure which might as well not be there as it opens with the slightest bit of pressure. It needs to be fixed as it is weaker than any other snap I have used and unsuitable for a piece intended for rough use. For what these cost, I expect better and will be returning them. Hopefully Arcteryx improves the next generation.
Seriously, after only 2 minutes in my shower, the water wore though. All jokes aside I was let down by the lack of waterproofness these pants have. If you kneel down in snow, or wear them in anything beyond a drizzle, you will get wet. Maybe my pair is defective, but I definitely won't be taking these mountaineering. I recommend the cheaper Outdoor Research Cirque pants for their superior waterproofness. However, these are warmer and more suited to just snow activities, unlike these pants which really are "All Around". At the end of the day Arc'teryx started as an alpine brand, so I am bummed that these are not more waterproof.
I recently purchased these hiking pants just over a week ago, and I'm absolutely thrilled with them. They quickly became one of my favorite pairs. I particularly favor them over lighter options. My only wish is that they offered a more precise fit between waist measurements, like 31 or 33. I opted for the gray color, and I must say, I love them. However, as a cool guy in his early fifties, I'm hoping they consider introducing a navy blue option – mustard and olive just aren't my go-to colors! Despite the higher price tag, these pants are worth every penny. I wholeheartedly recommend them. In fact, I'm already contemplating purchasing another pair in the future.
That's my all-time fav pants for alpine/waterfall ice climbing for temps, not bellow 18-20F. For lower temps, I still use the same pants but with a base (Phase AR) and I have pushed comfortably 5F (-16F wind chill) at Michigan Ice Fest 2020. Fit: For some reason, the cut of Arcteryx fits like glove to me with no more to be desired. I am a between M and L and went with the large with good left volume to add a light or midweight base layer. Fabric: Classic Arcteryx delivery of an overall luxurious fabric made to last. It is a very durable fabric that has excellent wind-blocking and water repellency. I know, pons are sharp and in tricky vertical ice routes, horizontal transitions are for me the number one enemy for punctures. I have used seal seam glue with humongous success so far.
Picked these up at my local REI and luckily found my size. Decided to pick them up for winter hiking and was satisfied with the fitment. Unfortunately while trying them on after purchasing, the button above the fly decided to fail. I have no idea how or why, but assuming it has to do with the piece of plastic inside of the metal snaps. This is a bummer that such a simple piece of hardware can render these pants useless. Other than that, the material and cut seemed excellent. Can’t attest to the overall durability of course, but may try these later on if they decide to change the button closure.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I own two pairs, one about 5 or so years old and on from 2023. They are awesome. I wore them trekking in the Arctic (Svalbard Norway). They are awesomely windproof- one the bow of a boat moving quickly into the wind coming off a glacier, I never felt it. We rode on a dogsled , at -8C and I was never cold. I hike in these pants, I snowshoe in these pants. They are my perfect pair of pants.
I love these pants so much! I almost live in them (along with my Fortrez hoody-- it's seriously good, get one too). I love the format of these pants. I bought a tall version so that I could have them go down all the way on my long lace-up boots and stay secure. Windproof and surprisingly water-resistant. The belt is great and honestly a bit handier than the metal hook that was on the Psiphon series-- both were good though. The advantage of the plastic belt is that it's more adjustable I'd say. These pants perform very well in climbing, snowshoeing, hiking, and winter conditions. Love them.
Had my Gamma AR trews for 5 years now. Very happy to report they really are the best of Arc’teryx. Predominantly I use them for hiking and scrambles in the English Lake District and the Scottish Highlands. They have resisted everything that has been chucked at them. Extremely dependable when out in the Fells, and the fit and the outstanding stretchable fabric just a joy to walk in. I particularly like the pockets especially the streamlined front hip one that can stow items you need instant access to. The bottoms have the neatess design with a front hook to clip onto your laces coupled with an adjustable toggle to close or open them out. They are that classic bit of outdoor kit that’s hard to better.
My second Gamma AR. Nothing to object. The "old" and very versatile Gamma AR. Only, a "cons" to the description of the product. Absolutely NOT fitted fit. Absolutely the classic Arc' regular fit. Nothing to object to, as I said, since that is the "essence" of the AR issue, but the problem is that it is increasingly common to find any "thing" in the descriptions of dead bird products. Accuracy in product descriptions may not be an issue for customers who use a Gamma, Alpha, or Beta to walk the dog, but it IS for the dwindling longtime climbers, hikers, backpackers customers. Regards
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought the Gamma AR this past fall and they are some of the best pants I have ever purchased. My main use was for hiking in Idaho and Oregon this last fall. Temperature was moderate but did get down to freezing early in the morning and late at night. I wore them day after day (black color) and they were perfect. Plenty of stretch - very comfortable. Not as tough feeling as Gamma MX but perfect for hiking etc. Having both pair of pants is a perfect match for fall, winter, and early spring. I am 5'8" 140 and small is perfect (weight 149 when first purchased and they were also fine)
