Great handling climbing rope from Black Diamond!
I've used this BD Babsi 9.2mm dry rope for three weeks so far with 7 total days of use. Upon opening the new package it was already 'butterfly' coiled and it was very easy to uncoil before use. The key initial impression was its very 'supple' nature that gives a soft feel to the touch while handling. It feeds through belay devices (both Grigri and normal plate) very smoothly for both lead belay and lowering. It absorbed the shocks of lead falls very well. Although this is not a bi-color rope, the factory middle mark (black) was very visible and easy to find especially contrasting to the rope's light blue color. After the initial few weeks of use (both sport and traditional climbing) the rope got the normal micro-fuzz on the sheath which created the nice subtle friction for the Grigri to engage faster. (*You definitely want to pay extra attention while belaying for the first few days of any new ropes as they can be very slick and slip through belay device more than usual.) Overall, this is a nice soft handling rope for any type of rock climbing. 9.2mm diameter rope is very light weight and it's great for projecting and sending hard routes. The only gripe so far is due to its supple nature it can be a bit 'noodly' for this diameter. The soft woven sheath gives great suppleness but the durability is also a question only the time will tell after a season of use.
Supple Rope
This is probably one of the softest ropes I have used. The outer layer is so supple and was great to belay with on the hands. Not sure what the durability will be on the long run given the material. Seems the outer layer was thicker than other ropes I've used which leads to wonder about the core if it was thinner and more likely to become a liability faster than other ropes over time. But the rope was easy to bend without a fight so clipping in was nice on the hands but also required a little extra pressure to get past a gate. Really liked the color and a good weight for an all-around rope. Would recommend
So far so good
Had a bit of a twisting issue but likely due more to the route and anchors than an intrinsic issue with the rope. Hope to get a lot of great climbs with this
Best all around rope period!
I use this rope for everything I climb! Barely any rope drag!
Outstanding Rope!
Great handle and great durability so far. Been climbing for three decades and this is one of the very best ropes I've ever used. A 9.2 with 9 UIAA falls? Love it! I'm quite sure this rope will be purchased again (and again) by me. My last two ropes were the Beal Golden Dry Stinger 9.4 and the excellent Mammut 9.5 Crag Dry, both outstanding ropes. But, so far, about two months in, I'm preferring the BD Babsi 9.2! HIGHLY recommend. BD has a real winner here.
Nice balance between weight and function
I really love this rope. First of all, the colors are super fun compared to the ropes I had previously used. At 9.2mm it’s a pretty thin rope that saves a decent amount of weight compared to other options. So great for a longer hike in. I took it on a 2 mile hike in and didn’t feel like I was trekking with a whole child on my back. My one drawback personally was the stretch in the rope. I took a fall on the rope to see what it would be like compared to my previous rope, it stretches a little less, so my fall felt slightly harder. This does however increase the longevity of the rope. Overall a great option for someone looking at a dry treated rope that’s light weight and durable.
Sleek in the Creek
I bought this for a trip to Indian Creek and it treated me well. Stretched it out on some massive 40 meter cracks and took my fair share of whips. I cannot even begin to explain how nice it is to have a lightweight rope when you're packing a quad rack up those steep approaches. Very, very satisfied with this rope.
First skinny rope - liking it a lot!
This is the first skinny rope I've ever purchased so my review is probably more of a comparison between standard vs skinny ropes in general, but I'll try to be specific about this rope in particular: - Felt amazingly supple, right out of the bag. Haven't had any bends or bites so far. - It's super lightweight. There's a noticeable weight difference going from standard diameter ropes to this. I'm excited to have shaved the pack weight! - My biggest concern going to a 9.2MM was that it would run too fast through belay devices but I was pleasantly surprised. The GrGri catches the rope excellently! And even an ATC, with a lighter climber, is no issue at all. The GriGri is my primary device but it's good to know that the rope is still not too fast for an ATC (and I can always rig a half rope on shorter sends if there's a concern with the ATC). Since this is a "performance" rope, it will be interesting to see how durable the rope plays out to be, but am hopeful with the right care this will be a great investment. Just the weight savings alone is a huge benefit!
Not very resilient?
Nice supple rope but doesn’t seem to be very resilient. A lot of wear and abrasion after only a few days of use. Maybe I’m just hard on ropes? Took several falls on it, but no falls over sharp edges. Jury is still out on BD ropes for me. I would definitely buy another though. We’ll see.
Fantastic rope.
So many great things about this rope. 1 - Super supple, knots well. No need to carefully unspool it out of the package is handy. 2 - Super lightweight. 9.2 mm feels so light. This 60m rope is just over 7.5 lbs. I didn't get to sport climb with it but I imagine that it would be great for long pitches when you are dragging the entire rope along with you. 3 - Dry coating is clutch! I dragged it through the snow and rappelled through snow/ice with it and the snow just fell right off. Also hoping that it stays cleaner after getting all dusty while hitting the crags. 4 - Triple marked mid point is also handy. 5 - All around awesome. Side thoughts. If someone is sport/trad climbing with it and using an ATC I would want to make sure the belayer was super attentive. With such a thin/smooth rope it will move though an ATC quick if/when the leader falls.
