Super Useful!
Took this Petzel Lanyard out to Yosemite for some big walls that we were hitting for the first time. Not the most compact piece of gear, but is was easy enough to pack out of the way when I wasn't using it, and it was really lightweight. Very quick and easy to adjust. You can take the load off of your main line, do what you need to do, and then load yourself back down with very little effort. It says that you can use it for rappelling as well, but I have yet to try it out for that. Overall very helpful device though.
Bulky but convenient
While this is mostly something meant for multi-pitch climbing, I found it very useful for cleaning sport anchors; the adjustable lanyard lets me clip a high anchor and pull myself up to it, and by pulling it in and out, I can shift my load easily between two different anchor points if I need to unweight one anchor briefly to untangle some carabiners. I did find the fixed end a little awkward to get on and off my harness sometimes, because the protective sleeve plus the length of a carabiner limits the range of motion. It's also a little too long as a rappel device extension for my tastes, and maybe overkill for single-pitch sport climbing in both weight and bulk, which is the tradeoff for the convenience of adjustability.
Great gear idea
I wish I had this 20 years ago, as it would have made an enormous difference on multi-pitch routes & belays, as well as rappelling. I had no previous experience with adjustable lanyards, but the Petzl YouTube video did a great job of explaining how to get set up. I think the single (Connect Adjust) may have been better for my purposes (single pitch leads & rappels), but the added capability of the Dual Connect is great. Regardless of which Connect lanyard suits your purposes, I think it will reduce anxiety on the rock and enhance your safety, and I see its usefulness in Trad, Sport, Mountaineering, and Canyoneering disciplines. You will want to spend the time to increase your familiarity with the lanyard prior to use, but it is a helpful, important piece of equipment.
Sport anchor magic
Definitely not a minimalist piece of gear, but it makes cleaning sport anchors much faster and perhaps safer, so it’s totally worth it for me. Clip in to an anchor bolt at full length, then easily cinch it up to take weight off the chains to clean. It saved me on an overhead hanging set of chains today when I was really pumped. There is a version without the extra fixed end, but I’ve found uses for it, like redundancy if coming off the rope completely or a (longish) extended rappel setup. Pros: Much easier anchor cleaning. Such a bomber hang that I’ve nicknamed it my pas-ifier. Cons: Kinda bulky, but has never gotten in my way. Has to be totally, completely unweighted to extend.
Great piece of gear for multi pitch
Recently bought this for a trip to EPC to do multi-pitch sport climbing. I used it 100% of the time. Overall it’s a great addition to my inventory but it’s not without its drawbacks. Pros: Reliable and robust. Fully inspires confidence when in use. Definitely does the job for connecting quickly to anchors and extending rappels No need for clove hitching (not that it’s a problem, but it was nice to just clip in) One hand adjustment is…….. just so dang nice. Cons: You’ll really want to get nice big carabiners for each side. I tried to use it with smaller BD biners and the gates wouldn’t quite open all the way. Use the SMD or AMD carabiners. I have the AMDs in there and it makes a world of difference. A little cumbersome on the harness. Couldn’t really find the perfect way to stash it while climbing. Kinda tough to get off the harness after you’ve fully weighted this. Cannot extend the adjustable side if you are weighting that strand. All in all, one of the better gear purchases I’ve made. It’s a luxury item, so it won’t be as meaningful to some people. But I’m glad I got it and I’ll have it on my harness very very often.
Good product, but didn't love it
Used multiple times on both single pitch sport climbing, and long trad routes with multiple rappels. Overall I thought the product was an improvement on the older version of the Connect Adjust lanyard, with more room in the personal anchor side for those with long arms. I also found it to be slightly easier to adjust, especially when giving slack after you pulled yourself in too tight. For me, having the second side for your rappel setup was unnecessary. It wasn't awful for long routes that had lots of rappelling, but there are other ways to extend the rappel with a sling that I thought worked just as well. The longer adjust side would make it easier to clove in an ATC if you wanted to keep an extended rappel that was adjustable. And I couldn’t find a way to keep this on my harness in an efficient way (as someone that takes a personal anchor on/off frequently to be out of my way on leads). Not a bad product, but if you are used to using slings for your extended rappels, I didn't find this to be necessary.
