Fast, easy, but awkward belay loop connection
The Petzl Connect Adjust Lanyard is a useful auxillary rack element, but I think there are some things to consider. Compared to a typical Personal Anchor Sling (PAS) that is commonly used, the distance between the carabiner and your belay loop is simply and quickly adjustable so you don't have to unhook your locking and reconnect it to a different loop to shorten. This is, in my opinion, a safer and easier approach. On the negative side, the included rope is, in my opinion, too thick to connect easily to your belay loop via a girth hitch or lark's head. It takes up a lot of space. I think the rope diameter is too large for its use; the larger diameter does not correspond to its use. A smaller diameter rope, such as 8 or 7 mm, seems more appropriate.
game changer
i have been using the metolius PAS for a couple years, it works fine but is not ideal for cleaning an anchor for rappel. For hanging anchors it is very difficult to take your weight off of the pas and transfer to rappel device especially if your atc is extended, it can be a real nightmare. With the connect it is super easy to pull in the slack putting yourself up closer to the anchor allowing you to put weight on your rappel device and then release slack from the connect. Super easy transitions and by far the best personal anchor. I only wish i had bought this in the first place.
Nice to have - mainly for sport climbing
The range and ease of adjustability is pretty sweet. There's definitely nothing easier, and I imagine the thick rope inspires confidence for some. I think this is a great tool for sport climbers to clean an anchor, multi-pitch sport climbs, or possibly multi-pitch climbs where weight and space aren't a concern. It's certainly not heavy, but it is a bit bulky and girth-hitching it to your belay loop and I definitely noticed it when running between my legs and clipped to the back of my harness. For most multi-pitch trad climbing I would leave it behind, but I opt for a clove hitch with the main rope instead of carrying a personal anchor system for those climbs anyway.
Best Piece of Climbing Equipment I Own!
I cannot say enough good things about the Petzl Connect Adjust Lanyard! I bought it as more of a want item than a need, but now think that everyone should have one! Ultimately I think it elevates my safety, as when I reach the top of a sport lead, I can quickly clip into the anchor, then adjust as necessary to ensure that I am in a good position to put up a top rope anchor. It is even more benefitial when transitioning from hanging on the tether to lowering off the anchor. I can lengthen the tether so I am in a position where the rope can take my weight, instead of unclipping from the anchor and dropping down, or down climbing, to weight the rope. Additionally, I have used it to very conveniently extend a rappel.
Yes…No…Maybe
Overall this is a very good product. But your climbing objective(s) along with personal preferences will determine if this is a worthy piece of gear. As for technical specs I weighed this (w/o carabiner) at 120g/4 oz and max extension of 34”. Pros: Lightweight, very easy to adjust, simplicity. Cons: It’s an extra piece of gear, 34” max extension. For sport climbing and even some multi-pitch trad routes with bolted belays this is a great piece of gear. However, my personal preference is to use a clove hitch with the main rope. I referenced the 34” max extension because there are some belay ledges large enough where the length of the Connect isn’t long enough to allow you to get closer to the edge and more easily communicate w/ your partner. While the Connect isn’t something I will take on every climb it’s definitely worth adding to the quiver as there are plenty of times it will get used.
an absolute must
I’ve put this through the paces and I must say it’s the best purchase you’ll make as a PAS type device, as something that I trust my life with its winner in my book. I’ve used this as a PAS, Rappel extension, and it’s used in my TR solo setup. The cam is easy to adjust, holds under load extremely well. The adjustability makes it a lot easier to use and safer then a Daisy chain or sling type PAS. The dynamic climbing rope used in this device gives me the piece of mind that in a factor 1 environment a true shock load will be absorbed a lot better then any static device. My only gripe is the lack of redundancy in the system as a single point of contact to the anchor unless in a multi pitch environment where it supplements the primary rope, However petzl makes the dual connect which introduces a better level of redundancy if that’s what your looking for. For the price though you can’t go wrong. This device stays on my harness at all times and has been used 4-5 times a week for the last few months with no problems with wear or quality.
Great PAS, don't use with an Attache Screw-Lock!
Boujee-ist personal anchor you'll ever find, but it's worth it. Super smooth action and just the right length. For a dedicated multi-pitch climber the dual connect could have a purpose, but for anyone else the single lanyard is great. Word of warning though! Don't use a petzl attache screw lock with this! A friend of mine had it jam up, and we had to cut their connect because there's no way to get it off of a jammed carabiner. Petzl also refused to help unless we could send them the carabiner that we left jammed at the top of a cliff.
Its a personal anchor and it works
Works ok for a personal anchor but wasn't as amazing as I expected. It adjust to any size but I have troubles adjusting 1 handed. Once I get used to it I will probably like it more. First use I chose the wrong size carabiner and almost couldn't even get it unclipped from anchor. I went from using Metalious PAS and both work about the same.
Good.
Easy to use, but agree with the comment that it is an extra piece of equipment when each oz needs to be usable. Overall would recommend- I can be a gear head :0) - but not an essential piece of equipment.
Worth it for me
This is definitely an upgrade from the daisy chain rings. Infinitely adjustable combined with the strength of a dynamic rope. Sure you can just use the full rope itself for most situations but this is pretty handy.
