Nicely designed harness
I've been climbing with a BD Momentum harness that I got on clearance a decade ago. That harness was a great bargain for an entry level harness at the time, even at full price (~$50). The new Momentum is now priced more inline with this Petzl, and I think the Petzl is the better option. First off, the Adjama has "DoubleBack" buckles that eliminate the need for you to do the double-backing yourself. I was confused at first trying to double-back them because you can't, and don't have to. It's one less thing to forget to do. The padding on the waist and legs is more significant than on my BD. Now my old harness my have lost some of its cushion, but I don't think it was ever as soft as the Petzl. I will give the BD credit for having a wider back waist though; that helps distribute pressure on the lower back while hanging. One thing I love on the BD is the ice tool clip. I never used it with any ice tools, but it was a great place to quickly clip several slings. The current version doesn't come with it and that's a shame. The Petzl also does not come with one, but they indicate on the box that it is compatible with their Caritool Evo holder. In fact, that add-on looks to be universally compatible, but some reviews indicate the wire gate may pop off easily. That never happened on my BD. The gear loops on this harness are covered in fabric. It seems like a sturdy material (probably Cordura or something similar), but I don't know that it will hold up as long as the standard exposed plastic ones I'm used to. It does look good though and I imagine they won't lose any function even if the fabric does eventually wear down. This harness has five loops, with the two rear side loops angled to try and bring your gear forward. Pretty smart in my opinion. One thing missing from this harness is a rear haul loop. The BD has a 12kN-rated rear loop for hanging heavy stuff (e.g. an additional rope for multi-pitch climbs) or for anchoring yourself down when you're belaying someone much heavier than you (you can do that from the belay loop too). The Petzl has a little loop in the center rear for a chalk bag. So, ultimately I think it's a great harness. I wish it had a rear haul loop and maybe I'll add that ice tool clip, but that's just because I'm used to having them, not a deal-breaker by any means. I wear a size 30 pant and got the medium so it would have room to go over some layers. It fits well. Oh, and I like the color :-)
Gear Loop Design Issue
Fit and feel of the harness was good but there is an issue with the gear loop design. The fabric of the gear loops wear out easily with typical outdoor use (pulling in & out of packs, sitting on rocks, climbing, etc.). This tends to happen at the corners of the front gear loops. The inner plastic gear loop piece is NOT connected to main harness body and will fall out if the outer fabric wears through (and dump any gear on that loop in the process). The ends of the plastic loop stiffeners can also easily pierce through the fabric which happened to me a week after use which Petzl replaced under warranty. I've seen also seen this with friends who have the same harness. The replacement Adjama lasted me less than a year before the one of the front gear loop fabric sheaths finished wearing through. This happened while I was climbing mid-route and dumped my cams on that loop. I've seen and heard other stories of these things happening with the Petzl Adjama (there are other online discussions about it). Photos attached of the failed gear loop and one of the loops that could fail any day now. Avoid this harness if you plan on climbing outdoors semi-regularly or be wary of the worn gear loops and reinforce them with tape as the fabric wears out.
I love this harness!
I bought this harness and immediately went for a week of multi pitch trad climbing in red rocks. The front gear loops are nice and large but not too far forward. On my old harness the gear would sometimes get stuck on rocks while I was climbing up but that never happened with this harness. The rear gear loop is perfect for large gear, random safety stuff, or tagging a second rope. I did a few hanging belays on it and it was pretty comfortable. I would 100% recommend this harness!
Truly great harness.
Comfortable, functional and enjoyable. I love the color, light weigh, and ease of use in this harness.
Leg circumference listed by Petzl Incorrect
The leg loop circumference range listed by Petzl are incorrect. I'm at the limits for sizes listed by Petzl for the medium and large sizes. At the maximum limit for medium and the minimum limit for large. My sizes are 84 cm (33") waist and 61cm (24") leg circumference. I tried on the large, but I thought the leg loops were a little loose, but they were cinched down as far as they would go. (See attached photo) Interesting since Petzl says a large will go down to 54 cm, 7cm shorter than the circumference of my legs. So I tried on a Medium, and the leg loops would only cinch up 1cm shorter than the large. Petzl lists the range as 51 to 61 cm. If it will only cinch to a 61 cm leg, how could it possibly cinch down to a 51 cm leg? It seemed that the medium leg loops were essentially the same size as the large. Petzl does show that you should be able to stick your fingers between your leg and the leg loops, so some looseness must be acceptable. Don't rely on Petzl's sizing for the leg loops - be sure to try them on AND hang in the harness.
Gear loop flaw if you climb wide cracks or chimney
First, I loved the plethora of racking space, but would never recommend this harness to any trad climber who finds themselves in chimneys or offwidths. This is because of the gear loop failure issues that have also been highlighted by a couple of the other reviewers. The issue originates from the fact that there's hard plastic on the *inside* of the fabric for the front gear loops, but only the fabric itself is actually stitched into the harness. This means that abrasion of the fabric (which can happen quickly if you're one who enjoys the wide) on the outside will break through to the plastic core, which doesn't have any connection to the harness other than being sheathed by the (now gone) fabric. Think of it as if you only tied into the sheath portions of your rope, but the core was still there. Luckily i caught it before it was able to dump a bunch of cams off my harness on a multipitch climb. Beware!
I love this harness. Had to return it again.
This is a fantastic harness. It’s comfortable. It looks great. It’s easy to adjust. It has 5 gear loops. I’ve had to return 2 of these harnesses due to a design flaw. The front gear loops have a hard plastic mold inside webbing. Most harnesses have the plastic outside the webbing. Twice the plastic has punctured the webbing. For my second harness which is the new 2021 model, it happened on my 5th pitch using it. If you never climb weird wide cracks, corners or chimneys this is a great harness. If you do, the gear loops will fail.
Best harness I've ever owned. Great for long climbs at Seneca and Red Rock Canyon. Have one for trad and one for gym.
Great, comfortable harness
This harness is fantastic. I really like the extra gear loop, and the padding and comfort level has been the best of any harness I've owned. I use this as a guide for Pisgah climbing school in NC, so I spend a lot of time in a harness so the comfort is much appreciated. The light loops will seem a little bulky at first but that is the cost of the comfort level. I am a size 31 pant and wear a medium which is just a tad big, I would get a smaller size next time. I've used this trad climbing, sport climbing, and ice climbing. It's been great for all of them
all day comfort
Great all day comfort climbing harness. Plenty of gear loop space for a multipitch climb without feeling like too much or too bulky for a day at the gym. I found the harness to be comfortable both on the wall and while walking around between climbs. Adjustments were simple and smooth. Petzl makes quality gear I (literally) trust my life with. Beyond quality and comfort, the Adjama harness looks good and did not bunch up my shorts as would happen with my old Black Diamond Momentum harness. If you can, try on a couple of different harnesses to get a sense for fit and the different adjustment styles. If you are buying online and can't try it on, the Petzl Adjama is a safe bet.
