Rack on a Jeep wrangler with spare tire
Very strong and well made rack. I had no issues carrying 2 mountain bikes on my jeep wrangler. It will require a Kuat swinging arm to clear the rear door of my jeep.
Great 4-tray bike rack IF you can maintain it
I bought this bike hitch rack Thule T2 Pro XTR & Add-On primarily to support my family's interest to go biking at all these cool parks around Calfornia. Pros: - It was a super treat to easily load and unload our bikes. The best feature was the handle bar at the end. This feature helped me easily lower and the tray while the rack was full of bikes. -The rack as a whole kept the bikes secure during less than smooth road trips. -Adjustable trays to fit different style of bikes. Cons: -Expensive -Powder coating easily wears thin, exposing steel to the elements leading to rust. -This rack IS NOT meant to be kept permanently installed on your tow hitch. Long term exposure to the elements, like salty air, will easily warp this expensive rack into a unsightly piece of metal. So, if you have the luxury storing this massive rack indoor, do it after each use. -Since I couldn't store the rack indoors, I'd regularly wash the rack with dish soap and dry it down. Tried to use rust remover. Unfortunately, I couldn't stop the rust and it just took over the rack. -You would think that that for a 4 bike tray system ($1,000+), Thule would have a more resilient components for outdoor equipment. -After 4 years, I'm confident this rack can secure my bikes anymore.
Must purchase the XXL ratchet straps for fat tires
Excellent rack, easy to assemble, very heavy duty… but according to Thule’s website, it is made in Poland for the European market, and the provided ratchet straps for 5 inch fat tires do not fit around the tire. Thule and the other online companies offer the XXL ratchet straps that will work. I found mine on the easiest online shopping site for $33 including shipping since I have prime. I would give this a five star if this came with the XXL straps already. REI, please provide access to the XXL ratchet straps and a note to purchase the straps prior to wanting to use the rack.
Do Not Buy! Broke First Time! Horrible Warranty
Do not buy this rack! This rack costs $1,500 with the add on, requires 2 hours to assemble and mine broke on our very first road trip! It’s very heavy, but actually not very strong; 2 of the stabilizer bars sheered off completely and a third bent on our first road trip. It’s a mediocre design…how the stabilizer bars grab the wheels…there is slop and movement and frame rub between the forks and the arms. What is worse is Thule’s customer service. After spending an hour on the phone, you are directed to their website to submit a claim…I’ve submitted it two times, the last being 4 weeks ago and nothing…not even an email acknowledging that they were processing it. Thank goodness for REI! Their return process was so nice! I won’t buy another Thule product. Period.
Perfect for fat tire e-bikes
Solid rack. We carry 2 50 Lb e-bikes on it & they travel securely. Heavy & well made, easy to install & load the bikes onto it. Only complaint is the supplied straps aren’t long enough in original configuration to accommodate fat tires. You have to pull them out & use without going through both slots.
Rain cover use caused damage and voided warranty
I have had this bike rack for a little over a year and loved how sturdy and stable it is. On my last trip however, I used a rain cover on my bike, and after driving for about 40 miles I noticed the bike was tilting backwards (see photo after rain cover removed). The extra wind load, due to the cover, apparently bent the upright arm backwards. When I submitted a warranty claim, Thule told me that because I used a rain cover it voided the warranty. I had to purchase and install a new tray/upright arm assembly at a cost of $300 to fix this. Nowhere in the Thule literature did they say that using a rain cover would damage the product and void the warranty.
Reinforce the swing arms at base , weld on gussets
So we have two 75lb. E bikes and on our 2000 Mile trip to baja and back from seattle the upright swing Arms that lock down into the front tires broke At the base. We tied the bikes upright to the ladder on the rear of our Rv. I had a welder reinforce that joint. We installed and welded two gusset triangle plates, one each side of the upright bars, were the original welds broke. I split the plastic covered and taped them together After installing longer screws as the gussets are two Big to fit inside the covers. Looks fine now. Tule manufacturing needs to beef up that joint .
Needed a bike rack as I pull a 5th wheel rv
I drive an F3500 super duty and pull a 5th wheel rv. I added a front hitch to my truck by myself to allow me to mount the Thule T2 Oro XTR 2 - 2" two bike mount at front of truck. I like the anti wiggle ability so bikes do not move. I do remove bike seats and handle bars to allow for great vision, would not remove them on a short 4 hour trip. Great to leave on when bikes not on it as it does not interfere with truck lights. Just love it, easy to use and locks work great for bikes when unattended.
Bike Fell off from this expensive bike rack!
I bought this most expensive Thule T2 Pro XTR 2'' last year for the safety of ourselves and others on the rood. However, after racking 4 bikes and confirming that they were fully secure (my son checked, my nephew checked and before driving, I also checked to confirm all bikes were secure), I started driving home. On the highway, I heard some noise and looked in the rearview mirror that one bike was dragging on the road (luckily all the traffic in the back noticed earlier and decreased their speed. I pulled over the car and took these photos to share with Thule for their help.
Thank you for letting us know about the issue! I reached out via email for more information and to start the warranty process for your Thule T2 Pro XTR 2. The issue could have been caused by the positioning of the front wheel hook. From the photo, it looks like at least one is positioned on the far-forward side of the wheel. The front wheel hook is intended to connect as close as possible to the front fork. If the damaged bike was attached in a similar manner, this could have been the cause of the failure. Poor durability
We read some reviews here and elsewhere about the plastic construction of the bike rack being of poor quality and lacking durability, causing bikes to fall out while in transit. We didn't think it would be true (maybe user error, a "lemon") but after just 1.5 months of frequent (once per week) use we noticed that one of the teeth in the rear wheel ratchet system was dented. We are afraid that this would cause problems in the future and wanting to avoid any accidents so we will be returning this bike rack. If it weren't for that, we'd keep the bike rack because it's otherwise easy to use.
