A palace for 2 and truly excessive for 1, extremely weather-worthy, and very simple to set up. The update to polyester fabric was a huge upgrade in performance, as was the addition of the bug skirt. One star off for the glaring design flaw of not having any way to vent the top of the shelter (not such much as a 2-way zipper, BD?!? Never mind an actual top vent like most tarp shelters. . . ), and yes condensation can be a huge problem as a result of this. At the end of the day, we bought this as an emergency shelter for SAR work, but we have ended up choosing it more often than not on most of our adventures.
Had the chance to put the Beta light to the test on a backpacking trip into the John Muir Wilderness. Super light. Easy to setup. Plenty of space for two adults w/ gear. GREAT lightweight tent.
After using this tent twice in the cold and snow recently, I love it. Many of the other reviewers effectively listed all of the positives. There is a ton of space inside and it is very easy to set up. The design is excellent and sheds wind and light snow very effectively. The tent does have mid panel tie outs that a previous reviewer missed? and with comes with line and tensioners to connect these tie outs to stakes. However to anchor the mid panel tie outs you need two additional stakes. The 6 tie out points on the tent have short lengths of cord with linelocs. In a minor blip, 3 of the 6 tie outs were fed through the linelocs upside down -- a simple problem to fix. In summary a great tent that I'm looking forward to using more!
I have now used this shelter for 15 nights. Love the ease of setup, the weight, the price, and the weather resistance. Only problem is that I live in a buggy part of the world and was hoping the bug protection would be sufficient. Sadly, it was not. Worked well for mosquitoes and other flying bugs, just not for spiders. We had two straight nights of waking up to daddy long legs crawling on our faces. Not great for sleeping. Come up with a better connection between the bug net and the ground sheet and I would happily buy this again!
I bought the Beta light this past spring and have just started putting it to the rest and well I LOVE IT! I had hot nights and super cold night in it and my dog and I are happy. It packs super small and for solo trips with my furry pal, it’s awesome. Super spacious! So far I have been lucky with only rain at night so haven’t set up on a wet ground yet but I have thought about getting a ground cloth for it, but it’s literally no where to be found on this website. Can we even get a ground cloth for this shelter?
I just received and unpack the beta light and the matching ground cloth. I confirm that the tent has four mid panel tie out loops, two on each side. It also comes with 4 adjustable cords for the tie out loops stored in the stake bag. The ground cloth weights about 13oz, it has 6 stake out points with bungee cords. There are also 6 toggle connectors near the corners to connect to the bug net loops. Each connectors are about 5-6 inches inward from the edge. I hope these information help.
Tried this tent on a late summer trip in WY. Weather was nice, chill nights, some lightning storms. For a 1 person use, for 20 days, with no footprint, was roomy and lightweight, but this tent needs a lot more ventilation!: either a little window on the top part (like the megamid’s), or a zipper pull allowing to open it up from the top, or the bug protection skirt should be detachable.. or something! There just too much condensation happening in this tent!
I’m a tent junkie. This tent shelter for two is bomber. Needed a quick lightweight shelter to quickly go over two bags and pads and stuff in a rainstorm on river trips where we sleep under the stars. Lots of room for two and gear. For only six anchor points, this geometry on this design is very smart and stout. Intermediate guy out points missing that people whine a little about are unnecessary. The peak lash points points on the exterior work for those tie downs but mostly unneeded. Great for suspending the shelter from two trees. The mosquito netting is strong and should wear well with anchor loops! A plus! May people love this thing and I now see why. I had a smaller pyramid once, and the shape failed. This shape is way better, a rectangle, and two Trekking poles or two ZPack 48 inch carbon poles puts the whole set up under two pounds! Nice Job Black Diamond!
I have had the original beta mid for years and have used it for backpacking and ski touring. For ski touring just set up the tent and dig down into the snow and provide room to stand and create a bench to sleep on. Because it’s light and small we have taken it on our adventure trips to Australia and Europe. My wife made sure we had the beta bug screen for the Australia trip. I highly recommend this tent.
I’d give the BetaLight 5 stars but it needs a hair more ventilation up high. They could do this with a mesh backed flap or tube high on either end. Other than that, this shelter is perfect IMO. Lots of room, love the mesh perimeter (could be a bit longer?), fabric is a definite improvement over the Sil material.
