This is the second Co-op REV bike we have purchased for our son. He recently graduated from the 12” up to the 16” size not long after his 4th birthday and he loves it so much. The 12” size was a great first pedal bike, he learned to ride it after starting on a balance bike, bypassing the training wheels. Now that he has graduated to the 16” size, the bigger wheels allow him to crank up some serious speed. The days of running alongside him are over, I have to ride along on my fixie in order to keep up!
Looks like a decent quality bike. Was hard to steer out of the box, further inspection revealed the top and bottom tube protruded into the head tube and was grinding on the steer tube. Not a huge deal, it'll just need work with a file....but not something I should have to do on a new bike. If you weren't handy with bikes or really understand how they work it would have probably gone unnoticed..it would still work, just very stiff uneven steering. Makes me wonder what else I'll find. Will do a full tear down and reassembly to make sure everything is working right. Also came with grease everywhere...which I know things need grease but it was a little overboard.
Horrible quality. I got this bike for my daughter for Christmas. Since it was winter, we did not use it much until the warmer months, and almost immediately it became clear that one of the training wheels will not stay on. We put it back on and comes off again within a minute. I see others report this issue in their reviews, too. I would highly discourage anyone from buying this bike, given that we are not the only ones having this specific issue, which makes this bike unusable with the training wheels. I am so disappointed in REI.
Looks like just as solid a bike as the 2021 model. Here are the colors since REI is struggling to add them
We have purchased two of these bikes for our kids and both had an issue where the right training wheels do not stay screwed in tightly to the frame, including falling out completely and causing minor scrapes and bruises. On the first bike, it was pretty early in its usage, so we contacted our local REI about a fix, dropped it off and got it back a few days later and had no further issues. On the second bike, it took longer to develop. By the time the issue developed, it was time to take off the training wheels, so we did not reach out to REI. Not sure what’s causing the issue, but 2 out of 2 bikes having it is discouraging.
The main part of the bike is excellent and it will be a great bike when the training wheels are gone. The supplied stickers were a nice touch of customization. The issues lies with the training wheels. No matter how much you tighten the hand screws holding the wheels, they will loosen up after light use. The wobble in the training wheel as it loosens causes the threaded portion to round out. There was enough material left that I rethreaded the hole and used some blue loctite to keep the threads seated. It has been holding this way. If there wasn’t enough material, the only way to fix it is to weld new aluminum, drill and retap the hole. It would have been junk.
Bike has been great. The sizing was done by the REI in the shop. My grandson saw the birthday bike and was excited. The store personnel made it a great time, by also being excited for him about the bike. I was wondering about the seat height, and before I knew it, the bike department had a set of Allen wrenches and adjusting the seat height. My grandson got on it, and it fit him perfectly, head, and pedal distance for his legs. I had put a ballon on it, to make the event special for my grandson. The store made it a great time, a great buy, and a great surprise for my grandson, William. Thank you REI bike group.
If you want to use training wheels, do not get this bike. Otherwise, it’s a nice kids bike! We’ve had two different versions of this bike and they’ve both had training wheels fall off, with the screws fully stripped. How we discovered this? Our 4 year old was biking down the street and the training wheel fell off, dumping him on the sidewalk. Thank goodness for helmets. Didn’t protect the rest of his body from road rash though. I’m honestly surprised it’s still on the market as it’s a disaster waiting to happen. I will say REI is super supportive during these issues.
Excellent quality kids bike that will hopefully last my two groms for years to come! The easy-off training wheels were a huge plus for me. Beefy components will hold up for a long time and it even comes with an awesome set of stickers to customize the bike! Big shoutout to the Greenville and Columbia, SC stores for the fitting help in store and the installation of some must-have accessories!
I got this bike for my son last year who was 3 at the time. Barely rode the bike as he wasn't ready until recently. After every few short rides, training wheel kept falling off. When it happened the first time, he was going slow and was very careful so he fell but he wasn't hurt. I put the training wheels back on and tightened it thinking it wouldn't happen again but I was wrong. The training wheel fell off again while he was going downhill and fell pretty bad. Thank god he had safeties on his elbow, knees, hands, and head. Otherwise, it would've been a nightmare. I don't recommend this bike.
