Very Good Cargo/Utility Bike with Modifications
Anonymous
I have completed my first 500 miles on the eBike. I have used it for commuting to work, a 50-mile round trip over hilly terrain, and on local trips to the transfer station with trash and recyclables in a trailer in tow. I have yet to load it to full capacity, but it handles well and seems to have ample power for long steep grades. I have carried the charger with me to top off the battery while I am at work, and I have not had any battery problems. The low gearing seems designed for hills and heavy loads, but I still found it to be undergeared. The REI shop mechanics kindly replaced the 42-tooth front chainring with a 48-tooth chainring that I purchased online, and that has made a substantial improvement. I found it strange that a utility bike would not be equipped with fenders, but I did find a source for 20-inch fenders designed for another eBike which I was able to fit. The detachable front rack on the bike is attached to the head tube, not the front fork, so it does not turn with the front wheel and makes the bike longer than it first appears. The original handlebar equipped is also quite wide at 69cm, so the combination with the front rack makes the bike a bit awkward to squeeze through narrow doorways and tight corners when bringing the bike indoors. I opted to switch out the handlebar with a narrower model that would allow more hand positions. At 53+ pounds, the bike is also quite heavy, and one might think twice about carrying it up any long flight of stairs. I was somewhat leery of a one-size-fits-most machine, but I found that it could be adjusted for a comfortable and stable ride. In the winter my return commute takes place in darkness, so I appreciate the lighting system included. I do carry back-up lights in case, but I haven't had to use them. I might also quibble about the owners' manual which is difficult to read, and the relative difficulty in finding 20-inch bike tubes with presta valves. All in all, though, a very impressive bike, rather easy to modify to suit individual needs. I am looking forward to finding other ways to use the bike instead of a car.

OK, but underpowered for hills
Patrick Michell
OK, but underpowered for the steep hills that I live on in the Mount Washington area of Los Angeles. A 500 watt motor and not 350 watts is really the minimum for this kind of bike. Having to change a flat tire is a real issue with an electric hub motor bike and the the presta valves on this bike do not make it easy to add tire sealant which can additionally help avoid leaks and flats. (Schrader valves easily accept tire sealant and as an extra benefit, almost any automobile pump works on a Schrader valve.) The 48 volt charger is standard issue but unfortunately has a new proprietary type plug which means you can't take advantage of an old charger or use someone else's comparable charger in a pinch. It's nice to have front and back lights which don't require additional batteries but by comparison to separately purchased bike lights, these are underpowered and do not blink. So I have to bring my battery powered brighter lights along anyway. The best feature about this bike is that if a motor or electronic component doesn't work, I can take it to REI and be confident that it will be repaired by knowledgeable and caring staff. You can't do this with a ebike purchased on the internet.

Still great after 800 miles!

My wife and I purchased this bike as to make our lives easier as a single car household. We regularly run errands on it, brewery rides, commute to work (my wife's commute is 19 miles each way on a bike trail, she can do it without recharging at work), and I took it to go camping this weekend (60 mile roundtrip)! I really only have 3 complaints- the primary is the rear taillight is really dim and doesn't have a blinking mode. It's no problem for me to toss on a second light under the seat, but that is often blocked by whatever I'm carrying on the bike. My second complaint is REI doesn't offer fenders for this bike. I found some and modified them to make it work, but most people wouldn't want to do that. Fenders are huge for a bike like this- don't want to show up to work dirty! Lastly, we use the seatpost clamp all the time because I'm a lot taller than my wife, and it's just not the nicest one out there. Overall, love the bike and would love to get a second if we had more space to store them. I'm a life-long cyclist and think the build is great for the price point. I was tempted to get a fancier e-bike, but I like that I don't mind locking this up at the metro or grocery store.

Be Aware - Long Term Considerations

Solid ebike, good value at sale price but... The battery and charger are propietrary to Bafang's new "ecosystem." This means that if the motor, charger or battery fail post-warranty, replacements may be very expensive. Given that REI is discontinuing this and the e1.1 models (1.1 is also Bafang), you may be hard-pressed to find them, as well. I've just scoured a couple of search engines and could bot track down the specific motors, chargers and batteries associated with REI's 1.1 and 1.2 model ebikes. I will upgrade my rating if REI chimes in and assures me that they will stock or avail replacement electric parts for this bike.

Game Changer

As a lifelong cyclist, I've been anti-e-bike for what turns out to be stupid reasons. I've toured all over the US, dedicated myself to the 29er platform for almost two decades, owned dozens of bicycles all suited for particular conditions, while also being connected to the bicycle industry. 30 minutes on this bike, with my 12-year-old on an identical build, has left me questioning why I have been so reluctant to embrace the future. This thing is a PURE JOY to ride. I'm a clydesdale, in an Alaskan community with steep climbs just about everywhere, and this bike brought sheer joy. It was a revelation. For real.

The Green Tornado

I took my bike out on a 6 mile hilly, dirt, sandy, rocky road. It was great! I’m so glad I replaced the street tires with mountain bike tires. Although, it was a bumpy ride without any suspension forks (but, I knew it would be when I bought it, because this model is meant more for urban riding). The suspension seat I ordered should help as well. Great purchase for my first ebike. I can already tell that in a couple of years I’ll be upgrading to an actual mountain ebike model.🚴‍♂️

1500 mile review

My wife and I got a pair of these when we downsized to a 1-car family about a year ago. I commute on mine daily (12 miles roundtrip), and we use them to run errands, and all sorts of in town travels. They are great for grocery runs, brewery trips, or whatever the weather will allow. I made some fenders using some old corrugated polycarbonate political signs (and then later upgraded to a black poly once I had a design I liked). It works great to keep the grime off of us from daily use. I do wish the rear light blinked, that they had off the shelf fenders, and that it was a little easier to find replacement tubes, but those a pretty minimal complaints. We added some large milk crates to the rear rack, and I have a pair or soft paniers that I add when I need extra storage that the racks won't provide (very seldom).

Outstanding E-Bike

My wife, sister & I completed 32 mile, 3400 ft climb and descent of Going To Sun Road in Glacier Park 10/2023. After 2 hour climb and the descent I had >25% battery. Love these bikes for errands around NW MT town on local paved trails and Seattle trails. Got bike to keep up with my wife & grandsons.

Great bike for this price point.

I've had this bike for about a month now and am really enjoying it. I love the front rack with it's frame mounting. It's not overly powerful but even though my daily commute includes a fairly steep hill and I weigh in at 215 lbs it still works flawlessly. I was a bit concerned about how to remove and replace the rear wheel in the event of a flat but it's no big deal as I had the rear wheel off to install fenders so I got to practice. You will need to carry a wrench for the wheel nut, a wire cutter for the zip tie that secures the power cable to the rear frame, and a replacement zip tie. This is not my first e-bike but it has a nice natural bicycle feel and is really handy for running errands.

Great Utility Bike

I have only positive things to say so far about the e 1.2 e-bike. I have had it for 3 weeks so far, ridden it many times. I use it to do my food shopping and errands around town. I have a basket on the back and another carrier on the front. I have added flashing lights front and back and wear a bright yellow jacket for safety. The bike is comfortable and provides a boost when you need it, going up the steep hill to my house, for example. But, you still get exercise, which is what I wanted. A charge lasts a long time. It is easy to operate. I view it as my second car!
