Gearing is a fatal flaw
FuriousATG

Came in to test drive this over the weekend. Was super excited to give it a go - the weight, form factor, quality of components all seemed like home runs and I expected we would go back home and order one. Unfortunately the gearing on this bike really cripples it. It has a serious ghost-pedaling problem at moderate to higher speeds. Basically, the highest gear isn't high enough, so at moderate to high speeds, your legs are spinning full speed like a hamster on a wheel and it's very uncomfortable to ride. While the top speed of this bike is theoretically 20 mph and you can get it there if you push really hard, it is not comfortable at all to maintain speeds in the 15-20 mph range for extended periods of time. If you don't mind riding this knowing that you'll mostly be in the 10-15 mph range rather than 15-20 it might be the perfect bike for you, honestly everything else about it was terrific and having REI for support is a big win. But the gearing issue would kill me in day to day life trying to share the road with impatient drivers on commutes to and from work.

Fun and affordable bike

After selling my old Kalkhoff e-bike I saw the Gen e1.1 on sale and I'm so happy I bought it. It's nimble, powerful and a lot of fun to ride! I purchased the Beyonder Soft Folding Basket for the rack and it fits perfectly. This bike doesn't come with fenders so I found SKS Velo 55 20 inch fenders and the guys at the Cary REI did a great job making them fit! I'm in my 50s and enjoying getting outside for easy rides and to pick up stuff from the grocery store. It flattens the hills around my house which were a barrier to me getting out and riding. Only slight negative is that the kickstand requires me to pick up the rear of the bike to drop the stand into place (this is by design I guess). I find it a bit annoying at times when I have to stop on my ride, but overall it's doable. Also if you get the Nite Ize rotating Smartphone holder, it doesn't fit the handlebars that great and the phone flips down as you go over bumps when riding.

Reliable and affordable - Fantastic first e-bike.

I've been riding this bike for nearly a year now, and it's truly become an essential part of my daily routine. The sense of freedom it provides, coupled with its positive impact on my mental and physical health, has been invaluable. Before I dive into specifics, let me clarify that this review focuses solely on the bike itself, not the broader advantages of e-bike riding. Overall, I've been impressed with its quality and design. The low center of gravity enhances stability, and the added boost makes for a delightful ride. The built-in rear rack is a convenient feature, and the brakes perform admirably. However, it's essential to address the battery life. It's just okay. On full boost, I typically get around 15 miles, while on lower settings, I can stretch it to about 25-30 miles. It's worth noting that I weigh 240 pounds, and my rides primarily involve flat terrain. Despite this limitation, the bike remains reliable for my daily needs. Now, onto some minor drawbacks. I've experienced occasional chain jumping, particularly in the highest gear, which can be frustrating. Additionally, while I'm unsure if my bike has the larger chainring, there have been reports that all bikes come with the upgraded size. However, even with this potential upgrade, I still feel that the chainring could be slightly larger. Unless I'm on a climb, I find myself consistently in my highest gear. Despite these minor drawbacks, the price point for this bike is pretty unbeatable for the quality and name brand security you get. I would buy this bike again and highly recommend it for someone getting their first e-bike. In summary, despite its limitations in battery life and potential undersized chainring, this bike offers a blend of functionality and performance that's hard to beat. Its quality construction and practical features make it a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking a dependable e-bike for daily commuting and beyond.

Great ride, but check the battery and charger

Riding this bike for the first 45 miles has been a joy. So much fun. Great value. However, I went to charge it for the first time and happened to notice the charger was quite warm. Looking more closely and it is clear that the charger is marked to not use for the battery for this bike. And also that the battery is made by another company and the user manual is in broken English. It is also not UL Listed. I would not have expected a company like REI to make/sell a bike with a clear warning label saying don’t charge batteries not 54.6v, but include a 36v battery. This is going back, that’s how fires start.

Just love my new ebike

We purchased this bike in yellow (nice color) in early September 2023. I'm 64 and in average (not great) shape. I just love this bike. I was able to go on a 20 mile ride with my husband with the assist on 1 more than half the time and off the other portion. The trail was a slight incline one way and it was a breeze. We have a hill in our development which normally kills me and stops me from riding my normal bike. It is really easy with this bike. And, while both our bikes fit in our car, it is easier to carry one on a rack. Our new 1upusa rack carries either his traditional bike or my new e1.1.

Gen e1.1 update after 400 miles...now with fenders

This is my updated review after successfully installing fenders. I've got about 400 miles on the bike now. No real complaints, I love riding this bike. I'm mosting an urban rider on trails around St Paul and Minneapolis. I've added a suspension seat post and a mirror in addition to the fenders. It's my understanding that Portland Design Works is set to announce a set of fenders specifically for this bike and the gen e1.2 model. Rather than waiting, I found some SKS Bluemels 20" in a 60mm width, just about perfect for this bike. The rear installation went well but in order to make the front work, I had to replace the front tire with a 2" diameter. This is still a fairly beefy tire and most folks wouldn't notice unless you pointed it out to them. I also had to buy a set of SKS suspension fork adapters for the stays. All in, including the tire and tube for the front I spent about $110. Not cheap, but it's a solid installation that should last the life of the bike.

Heavy old gen e-bike

Very heavy older gen e-bike, hard to lift onto bus carriers or carry up stairs. No quick release front wheel so it's impossible to load into a car or cab if needed. No options for fenders so even a little rain splashes over rear rack, battery and all over shoes and pants when commuting.Even after multiple adjustments seat keeps dropping over time (less than 180lb passenger). Range is 40 miles, lower if you use lights or carry groceries or move beyond level 1 assist. Assist is button based no throttle as it is early generation. No smart phone integration for ebike controller available.

Great bike exactly what I was looking for!

I bought this bike for the sole purposes of being able to take my granddaughter for rides. I added the Burley Dash RM Child Bike Seat, and it is rock solid she loved it. I am an avid bike rider, ride, 4000-5000 miles a year. I could have added a child bike seat to my touring bike or road bike, but I wanted something that gave me more options, especially as she grows, so I wanted to get a cargo bike. I wasn't looking for an electric bike, but I will say the pedal assist is great, and will allow me to have friends ride with me. The bike is solid, well built, but itis heavy, going up steep hills even in low gear is a workout, but that peddle assist makes it a breeze!
