Not Great
I'm 5'11" 170lbs and go trail running pretty much every day 5 to 6 miles in northern california. I have many tops like this(assortment of high end brands) and windbreakers all size medium. This medium is tight, which is ok if i'm running in it, but i would only wear this running, too tight for any sort of casual wear. It's strangely warm for being so thin. The sleeves are the worst part, too short for something that has thumbholes that you're supposed to be able to use to cover your hands. I wore it once running and now its at the bottom of my pile of running tops. I will probably give it away. I do like your hats though Outdoor Research!
OR nailed it with the Echo
I feel like I'm an undercover ambassador for OR. I'm continually broadcasting my positive experience to other hikers and sailors and the Echo series is what I tout most often. I just can't say enough good things about this piece from how fast it dries to the UPF 20 protection. Most times I'll have a short sleeve under a long sleeve 1/4 zip, my favorite combination, and zero sunscreen. The only reason for 9 stars is I find it a little fragile and have to pay attention to the kind of brush I'm hiking through but I understand that is what makes it so ultralight. Buy one...it'll give us something to talk about when we meet on the trail!
Sun Protection
The Echo fabric is amazingly light and breathable, while still offering good sun protection. The zip neck enables you to opt for full coverage of the neck with it up, or some added ventilation when down. The fit is slim but not form fitting, so you can wear it after your ride or hike without feeling like your trying to look like the Rock. So far the fabric seems durable enough, but time will tell. Mine is the 2021 version, I'll be interested to compare to the new improved version should I purchase another at some point. One thing I'd like to see is a small patch of Ferrosi soft shell material on the elbow and forearm, as this seems to be the spot I seem to wear and tear.
I can't stop buying this perfect layer
Could not be more pleased with the Echo quarter zip. I started with one and then quickly ordered two more. They're truly that flexible and comfortable. I've worn them as a lightweight under-layer on chilly days, a sun layer on warm days, on morning trail runs in the PNW, and just lazing around the house reading. It fits true to size, soft when directly on skin, is quick drying, and I'll probably throw down and get another one just because. Thanks OR!!!!!
Great lightweight long sleeve
Size medium is a great fit for my 6'0" 180# athletic build, slim fit and the length of the sleeves and body are perfect. My first time wearing this was rim 2 rim 2 rim in the Grand Canyon. Worked perfect for the cool 4am start, I continued to wear it through the bottom of the canyon (about 70 degrees) with the sleeves pushed up, then it was great again for the blowing snow on the North Rim.
Ultimate hiking shirt
I bought my first Echo 1/4 zip about two years ago for a backpacking trip. I loved it so much that I now own FIVE of these shirts. They are, in my opinion, the perfect shirt for warm weather outdoor activities, especially if you need some level of sun protection. I will be thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2020 and this is the shirt that I'll be wearing.
I would buy again - in fact his bday is in Feb:)
Our son bought my hubby one of this style shirt two years ago. He needed something to wear to protect the back of his neck from the sun while out on the lake or creek fishing. He has worn it exclusively just about everytime he's out on the water. I decided to purchase him another one for Christmas so now he has two - don't have to do the laundry quite as often:) He loves the breathability of this shirt - comfortable to wear whether the temps are hot or cold. The zipper option allows him to raise the colar to protect his neck from the sun. Perfect for this avid fisherman!
normally a large but had to size up. All of the OR gear I find very hard to size. Sometimes I'm a L sometimes XL real pain as no returns when using this site. Back to the shirt long and short it stinks.... reminds me of first gen synthetics. I thought we were past this. I've worn synthetic baselayer for ten days straight in the mountains with no smell. I wore this shirt on two cross country ski (moderate output) outings. Maybe 2 hours skiing total and it smelt like I spent the night in a cheese factory. A soft cheese factory if you get my metaphor. Would not recommend
Great for layering or on its own
First, the echo is the softest shirt I've ever owned. It's a great piece just for the comfort. It works well over a t shirt in mild conditions (50s and 60s), and also does well as a layer on colder days. Anything below freezing and it's probably not going to do anything for you unless it's a base layer. Much lighter and thinner than Patagonia capalene. It's think enough that if there is writing or a logo on a t shirt underneath you will see it (on the pebble version). I have yet to try it in anything warmer than mid 60s, but I think it will do very well as a sun blocker on warmer days - a great alternative to a PFG button down or something similar. All around a great and versatile piece. Sizing was true to size for me.
One of my favorite shirts
Just ordered my second of these echo quarter zips. LOVE these shirts. My other/first one was from a few years ago, and this is the same great material but with some updates like thumbholes and a zipper cozy for better seal at the neck. Not a cold weather piece. Maybe as a base layer. But absolute perfection on warmer days when you want to wear a shirt but don't want any added weight/warmth. Very light and breathable and looks good - athletic cut that hugs the body but not skin tight. One of my warm weather favorites. Wear it on runs and socially too.
