Springs Breaking Frequently
I've had a problem with the springs breaking every 6-8 months on these cleats. And, that is having two pairs of shoes that I interchange regularly (one white pair and one black pair to match my kits). I ride about 8K miles per year, so the springs in each set of cleats are breaking with about 2K-3K miles. I've been riding these Speedplay pedals/cleats for over 20 years, and just recently seem to be having this problem in the last 3-4 years. And, buying the cleats are not cheap. It's made me consider buying new pedals, but I have Speedplay on several of my bikes, and that switch would take a significant investment.
No longevity
I have been riding with Speedplay for years and was happy with the product but now that Wahoo took over I can’t get 1 season without the cleat spring breaking. No sure I want to keep these.
O.G. Speedplay rider
I have been riding Speedplay since the 1990's. It was an accidental meeting when my other brand of clipless pedals broke and I stumbled in to my LBS and saw this other worldly pedal and was drawn to them instantly. Since that fateful meeting, I will never ride anything else. Speedplay pedals offer everything anyone needs in a high quality pedal, lightweight, low profile, tons of float, easy to clip in and out, and the cleats have been refined to the point of excellent shoe integration, simple to install/replace, and aerodynamic properties. These are the best pedal and cleat system out there, hands down.
I have been using Speedplay
I have been using Speedplay pedal systems for over 30 years. What fascinates me most is that they continue to make improvements on an already brilliant design. The cleats are the best system on the market. I ride between 7 and 10k miles a year and have never had a knee issue. I am ALWAYS the first rider clipped in when leaving a traffic light on group rides. Pedal engagement becomes a reflex. While other riders are fumbling looking down to see if their feet are still attached to their legs i am up the road and they are chasing. The cleats are easy to walk in to boot………NOW BRING BACK THE FROGS!
Speedplay Cleats take time to get them right
The cleats are very good once you get them set up. Trial and error because I ultimately added a front shim to sit properly on my new Fizik cycling shoes. It was very difficult to engage the cleat without the shim. Also the Q factor takes time to set up which is foot distance from the crank. And setting up fore and after a couple of times to dial in where to put the cleat. Bring a phillips screwdriver with you. I love the float and easy entrance and exit once the cleats are set up properly, just be patient.
sad that Wahoo bought Speedplay
I’ve ridden Speedplay for 20 years and I still think they are the best pedal system for road. I’ve never had trouble with them until Wahoo came along. The springs don’t last and the cleats are more expensive. This last break caught me by surprise when I could not unclip and I fell into traffic. The spring tip broke off and slipped behind, preventing it from expanding so locked onto pedal. Could have been ugly but only minor dings.
Better now than ever!
Installed just like the originals. Click in and release are also the same. Walkable covers seem to attach better and stay on as I haven't lost one after using them for a few hundred miles. Very happy so far!
Keep a spare set of cleats. They do wear out.
It is a pedal cleat, it works. Unfortunately, they do wear out and need to be replaced. Buy an extra set when you buy pedals. Keeping a spare set on hand means never missing a riding day. You'll be glad you did.
Improved design - same great product
The new cleats are a big improvement from the previous models. The ability to customize the amount of float is a great feature not found in other brands.
OK so far
Still relatively new, about a month, which is a problem for reviews written so soon after installation. These have been pretty solid so far, although I am getting a tiny bit of play and noise from my right cleat. Time will tell, and I hope they hold up. The reason I say this is that I started with the light action cleats, which are junk IMHO. I was on the verge of switching pedal systems entirely after 20 years with Speedplay. Wahoo support was great, and ended up sending me another pair, but they had the same issues, and I should have gone with the standard tension to begin with. Clipping and unclipping are more difficult than the old X2, even if you're using dry lube - it requires a firmer turn of the ankle to unclip. The cover is nice but I still worry about walking on gravel. Seems better to have the entire cleat covered.
