I bought these in anticipation of long backpacking trip in a few months so I could log some miles and break in new boots. I have had great luck with Smartwool in the past; however, these socks make me nervous. They have great cushioning and seem to be well-contoured, but they stretch out very quickly when wearing them. I am now reluctant to take them on a multi-day backpacking trip as I think they will become a blister liability in short order. For short-term wear or on a cold day, these are great. For my multi-day trip, these will stay behind and I will need to find a better option. That's $26/pair down the tubes... [For reference, I am a size 10 boot and bought large socks.]
I am not one to normally review products but so far these are amazing. I bought 8 of these at once on my first purchase. I got them to be used as an all around sock for everyday use, hiking, camping, home gym, and most important to me; for long distance all weather motorcycle sport touring. Out of concern that I wouldn't like them because I didn't like Wigwam or Darn Tough, I decided to open one pair and wear them as long as I could to see how they faired with the intent to return the other 7. I'll be keeping them all. These are the most comfortable socks I've ever had and even doing 10 miles on a cross fit bike every day and motorcycling over 500 miles they lasted 5 days before starting to smell. They made all my footwear more comfortable. I can only hope they last a long time but I'll probably be but another 6 pair and throwing all my other socks away.
If you look at the picture of the socks advertised and the ones I got you should notice their is no comparison. Not one thread of blue in my pair but plenty in the picture. Also after just a few wearings and washes their is major pilling going on. They are comfortable and I do wear them but certainly not what I expected.
Never thought I’d like socks so much. I bought these for a winter trip north of the Arctic Circle and never had cold feet.
I've worn the Smartwool hiking socks for years and loved them. The newly redesigned pairs I just purchased will be going back to REI unfortunately; they have a much looser weave and don't have the nice snug fit as in the past, bunch up, don't stay in place and have way too much space in the toe area, the materials don't seem as high quality and they aren't as tall. They changed a great product into one that's not very good at all.
Provided me with enough cushion through all 24 miles of the Enchantments in one day. Did not get any blisters.
I won't wear any other socks hiking and camping. I wear these on cold runs too. So comfy!
The socks are great. Spending over $25 on one pair of socks delivered is not.
Not very cushioned for "full cushion", seem shorter than normal crew.
Should have gotten a slightly higher version. Ending where the sock does, it tends to not stay up well, and exposes the shin to the cold
