I received these in the mail today and am extremely surprised how narrrow they are in the toe box/metatarsal area. I bought these to replace some Vasques that have never seemed to fit quite right. I absolutely love my Xero Prio running shoes which allow my wide feet to spread out in their natural shape and not be squeezed at the ball of my foot and across the metatarsal span. These are so narrow in that area they cause my metatarsal to be squeezed without putting any weight on. I was hoping for a fit like my Prios or like a great discontinued pair of Keens that I wore out. In the photo the major difference in the shoes can be seen. When measured across the sole my Prios are a whole 7/16” wider in the same size.
Xero was nice enough to send me a pair of these Daylite Hiker Fusion to review, I've been reviewing some of their shoes for a while, and was looking forward to these. I've been able to test them out hiking, in the mud, in water, and snow. They've become my new go to hiking boot. They're rugged, and have the straps that were on the side of the original Daylite Hiker fused in now in this Fusion version, so they should be more protected and durable and hold up to rougher stuff even better. But they're also still really light and don't feel like you have super heavy/clunky boots on. They have a great, substantial tread/lug pattern for lots of grip and traction without getting mud all stuck in them, and I put them in some serious mud. The sole still gives you some feel, but is definitely protective and does well on roots, rocks, and rough terrain. They are water resistant, but not waterproof. I got them wet, and they'll hold up to a quick splash. If you want a rugged hiking boot with good protection, while still being zero drop and lightweight and comfortable, then this it.
Somewhat avid hiker. 45 years old, have been hiking since a kid. Usually hike several times a month, usually dayhikes with my kids now. Over past 15years I've worn both Vasque and Merrells. Decided to transition to barefoot footwear. I wear a 10.5 normal boot for both of the above boots. I ordered a 10.5 of these and they where short on the toe length and narroq where the ball of my foot was. Ordered an 11. Still too tight on the ball. Returned both pair and I'm trying a new company. I've had issues with their sandals previously: coupled with these I've given up on Xero Shoes. Good idea, poor execution.
Junk. Comfortable but terrible quality. 2nd day had a loop fail that holds the lace
I was sent a pair of these to try out before their release. I figured I'd just use them every day because it was sloppy snowy and wet. I ended up using them on my Electronic Unicycle, I used them hiking, I wore them to church and work and basically didn't take them off. They are surprisingly light. Lighter than anything else I own. They are like moccasins only with soft rubber souls. This is my third pair of Xero shoes and I'll not be switching back to traditional any time soon.
I was hoping this shoe would be amazing. I think that the whole negative heel concept is very comfortable. However the souls of this shoe are terrible. I bought a pair for myself and one for my son to walk the road to santiago. We started in the south of France, headed over the Pyrenees and made it to around 15 miles before Burgos, when I started to experience terrible pain on the soles of my feet and so did my son. It was evident that the Soles were giving out, not just on my shoes but also my son's. It was so painful that we had to buy two brand new pairs of shoes that cost over 300 euro. So no I do not recommend these shoes for hiking.
They have very soft soles like house slippers. This makes it hard to hike ion rocky terrain in these boots. They are very comfortable on smooth surfaces. Another interesting problem occurred when I went hiking in the sand dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park. Sand got into the space between the liner and the outside of the shoe. I emptied out quite a bit right after the hike. Sand is still coming out of the shoes three weeks later. I'm going to return them to REI since I don't need an expensive pair of house slippers.
Thanks Xero shoes for sending me these shoes to review! Great, lightweight boot! The tread for such a lightweight, barefoot shoe is phenomenal. I never noticed any sort of slipping or sliding while going over ice, snow, or steep inclines. They are also insulated extremely well for being a “light weight hiking boot”. They’re not even meant for the cold, harsh weathers of winter, yet these kept my feet extremely warm. The wide toe boxes and zero drop soles make for an extremely comfortable boot that really allows your foot to be a foot. Any way your foot wants to bend, stretch, or extend, these shoes will allow. Functionality and comfortability wise, I give these a 10/10.
I’ll cut to the chase. It’s a cool minimalist design, but it’s made in China. The sole on the right shoe started coming unglued after one 10 mile hike. The left sole started coming unglued about two months into wearing them. The lace eyelets broke at around months 3 on right shoe. These shoes are pretty garbage. Returned them and got a pair of vivos.
The pair in Brown have been Awesome wear them indoors and out!!! So Glad you installed the metatarsal ridge/ support protects my feet from rocks out in the desert where I live. Sizing runs small in length and width normally wear 9.5 but tried on the size 11 wide fits great. Can't get over how less shoe is better than stiff boots for overall comfort
