Jacket performs really well, blocks wind, and decent water repellent. Warm with just a t-shirt underneath and you’ll be fine at the resort with a shell. But hiking up in just this, I still overheat some. Black Diamond sizing seems to run on the large size. I am 6’1, 185 and the medium is trim and shorter on the arms, but large is just a tad baggy (if being over critical). The hoody pull cord is awesome, not many other jackets have (OR air refuge, mtn hardware compressor)and when windy it’s clutch. Durability is there.. have bumped into some snags and trees and still haven’t punctured. It also makes a nice casual daily jacket.
I like the outer fabric on this jacket and the stretch lining. But the overall fit is a little to roomy for me especially around the mid section. I would not consider myself skinny but the added room in the front of the jacket seems a bit much for me. I was hoping for a trimer fit to this jacket to use it as more of a tour-up piece but now just use it as a house jacket. I do not find this fit issue with the other jackets I own in this category from the competition. I do have to say the added features this year are quite nice with the helmet drawstring and the outer chest pocket.
Perfect for doing everything, backcountry, under shell liner, and heading into town. Perfect for travel and easy to back. Looks great, fits perfect, 6’2” 180#, medium
My jacket arrived today so I will offer my first impressions then return here early next year, 2021, for a more comprehensive review when the jacket is put to the real test. I am 5'9", 170 lbs. If there is an outdoor activity, from cross country to alpine skiing, from road- to off- road cycling, I am there. I had an earlier version of this jacket for seven years and loved it. While this one feels a bit beefier it is by no means bulky or too heavy. Second, I own the hard shell 'Mission' by BD (medium, too) and the First Light fits very well beneath. I sense already all I'll need for a base layer on the slopes is my "Craft" that I use cycling and hiking on warm, hot and cold days. Enough said for now; I plan to return in Feb/March for further comment.
I was in search of something I could wear in the Colorado mountains year-round. This jacket works great as a single or outer layer on mild days (40-60°F) and also something I can layer with on cold days. This jacket also regulates your temperature nicely. If you're working hard, you'll be warm in 25°F with a baselayer. Keep in mind this jacket is geared for high output activities, but also works great for wearing casually around town without looking like an Everest guide.
My absolute favorite jacket. This is your does everything, wear everywhere daily go to. Keeps you warm outside in the elements, breaks the wind, insulated and warm. Comfortable as a hoody, regulates and breaths great when your indoors or in the car between adventures. Use mine as a great midlayer for ski touring, fly fishing, chopping wood, going to the store etc… i have multiple pairs of this jacket. Never had an issue with them. Great buy! Would recommend
This hoody is awesome! Warm and breathable, it's the perfect amount of insulation for colder days as a midlayer and when it's warmer is a great standalone jacket. The materials used is where this jacket shines. Feels very premium, nicer feeling material than my arc'teryx atom SL. Sizing is American, so if you're used to Canadian/euro sizing you may need to size down. I'm a medium in arc'teryx and a small fits me perfect for this jacket
I purchased this first light stretch hoodie in the green color about a month ago. I’ve only had the chance to wear it a couple times around town but love the look, fit and color of the jacket. I look forward to taking it on many adventures. And feel that layering it with a light down jacket if the extra warmth is needed as it’s not that warm by itself. In 6’4” with slim build and purchased a large.
This is one of my favorite products from Black Diamond. I got it to be a light-ish to mid-ish level layer. The first time I had it with me temps were much lower than I expected, and this was the only layer I had with insulation and it punched well above its weight class and saved the day! I’ve brought it out a lot over the last year and it’s one of my most commonly used layers.
Very durable. Is incredibly warm for how lightweight it is. It is definitely one of my favorite jackets. Even though I thought I was getting a brown jacket because of the picture for the color(kingfisher). It is bright blue. So be warned. The color is correct but the picture used was wrong. If I can find it in the brown I definitely would buy a 2nd one.
