Disappointed
I really enjoyed using this on my recent backpacking trip. The plate came in the most handy for eating my tortilla, avocado, tuna and artichoke wrap for lunch. Unfortunately, I noticed a broken snap on the bowl when I got back. I found the snap loose in my pack and when I tried to reattach it, it was clear that it broke off. Not sure if it got snagged on something and this is a user error, or if if they are just not sturdy. Overall, I'm not sure they're worth it because the bowl is no longer functional.
Broken and misaligned snaps
I purchased two of these sets and was disappointed. One set had a bowl with a misaligned snap. I was unable to connect it to create the four folded corners. I attempted to force it, but there is no real way to do that since the plastic of the bowl is pretty rigid. I took the other set on a trip and one of the snaps on the plate broke the first time I used it. While I appreciate the light weight and slim profile of the product, I need something more reliable so I returned both sets. The one other factor that you may consider is the temperature during your normal trek. It was chilly on the one morning I had this product out in the field, maybe 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This made all of the plastic difficult to bend into shape. In addition after using the cup and bowl to hold hot items, tea and stew respectively, they took on a consistently curved shape. Just a warning that these won't stay completely flat.
The best hiking dishes out there
I've used fozzils for YEARS and seriously can't imagine using any other dish set for backpacking now... they're super light and take up virtually no space. just got another solo pack cause I like their new pattern. they make great gifts for backpacker friends too!
Easy to pack
These things are awesome I use the plate for myself and the other 2 for dog bowls on the trail. The cup was missing 1 snap so I only gave 4 stars I will exchange them and keep them as a primary part of my backpacking gear
Great for travel
I haven't taken this camping. I flatten it and take it on work trips. It nicely fits in a 9x12 folio with all my papers, so I always have it with me. Along with a cloth napkin, Outlery flatware (in an Altoids sized tin), and a few other items, I can avoid a lot of paper and plastic while on the road, in airports, hotels, etc. It doesn't seem durable, but mine have held up so far for well over 2 dozen trips of 3 days or more each.
Great dishes! Just be careful with the snaps
I've used these dishes on several trips. They work well, and none of the snaps have broken. But I saw at once that the snaps are plastic, not metal; so I've always been careful with them. I open and close them gently, making sure to push or pull straight, not sideways or with a rapid jerky motion. Fozzil's own Web site says to break in new dishes by snapping and unsnapping them 5 times, to get them to fold without a lot of resistance. After I snap one together for use, I like to press with my fingers on all the fold lines, to make them lie flat, and keep them from putting a lot of tension on the snaps. As other reviews say, the are super-light, fold flat for carrying, and have handy measurement marks. Also, of course, the price is great! Being thin, they do get hot when you put steaming drinks or food in them. But they have raised tabs that serve as handles; and if you hold them at the edges and corners, very little of your skin actually touches them, so they're comfortable to use. I never had a problem with burning my lips.
Practical and inexpensive!
I really like these, they’re way more durable than I was expecting. The material is thick and the snaps are sturdy. I love that they can double as a cutting board, are very easy to clean, and it’s so smart to include measurements on the cup and bowl. And of course they unfold flat and barely weigh anything! These are definitely worth the price. And the topo is Mount Rainier!
I like the topog print
It is nice that the bowls lie flat. They hold water. They are a little difficult to snap. The material is pretty durable.
Bring back Fozzils!
REI should carry these in store, and learn to market them to folks. These snapfold plates, bowls, and cups are one of the best outdoor inventions I've seen in awhile. They're lightweight, mostly durable, and can be used for a host of different backpacking cooking needs.
Great weight loss tool for your pack
This is my second set First set still going strong for six years Helps keep my pack light (seven lbs) for base gear
