These shoes are awesome. I live in Colorado and do a lot of class 3/4/5 scrambling on ridge lines as well as running/hiking 14ers. I love long adventure days, but I am also not 100% always 'steady' on my feet. These shoes are amazing. I feel WAY more confident in scree fields, climbing on technical terrain, and by default do great on maintained trails. I wear these when I run 14ers because I feel confident in their tread. Additionally, a few years ago I got a sesamoidectomy (foot surgery) and thus need good support and sturdy shoes. I would size down half a size on your pair. I have a wide toe box and it fits well for my foot shape. After consistent use all summer, I still can't tell a difference in my tread.
I bought this for a hike up Mt LeConte after Hurricane Ida came through. Water was pouring off the mountain and many crossings were 4-6 inches deep to the crossing rocks. With Gators I will say my feet were dry nearly half the way up and short from being completely waterproof, they did eventually take on water but quickly water seemed to squeeze out and dried up quickly overnight. They are great on rocky, pebble and grabbed the trail when needed. I had to return for an exchange only because one of my shoes was missing a strap which I didn't know until I was on the Mt and needed to hook onto my bag. LOL Light and Comfy. Order 1/2-1 size smaller because they run big.
Wore these right out of the box for a 20 mile hike and they felt light as a feather. Since then, they’ve been on several long day hikes. No aches, no pains, no blisters. Great traction & stability on rocky downhill. Runs slightly big, I’m usually an 8.5 but I sized into an 8. My feet are a bit wide and these are a perfect fit for me. Roomy toe box is a plus. And as always, I’m a fan of the Quicklace system. I’ve worn them on mountain hikes, waterfall hikes, up a via ferrata - they really are versatile and, so far, durable. My feet remained dry despite stomping in snow, streams and mud. They’re so grippy that microspikes aren’t necessary. The white soles get a bit dirty but other than that, pretty pleased with this shoe. If I had to pack only one pair of shoes for a long trip filled with adventures, I would surely grab these.
I love this shoe for the access it gives me: rain, snow, mud, or rock, the Cross Hike lets me go anywhere my feet will take me....DRY! I've never before had a shoe that lets me run through muddy puddles and melting snow to still have dry feet after 3 miles, and so I'm now a lifer with the Cross Hike. Thank you, Salomon, for the best shoulder season shoe a girl could want!
Along with hitting the trails with these, I have worn them to the grocery store, while doing yard work, dog walks etc. thinking that I’d have to break them in due to the shoe being so sturdy, but I was wrong! Great comfort from the very beginning. I typically wear a size 7.5 and have a wide footprint, so I must admit I was a little nervous when I ordered that size but to my surprise they fit so well. No pinching on the sides, no blisters. I was also very pleased with the stability/grip from these shoes. I hike with my 11 month old who rests in a carrier on my back so there is little to no room for unstable footing. Highly recommended to all the other hiking moms out there! Now I must add, if you’re planning on doing lots of side steep terrain I suggest you just spend the extra $10 for the Mid version. This past weekend i took these to a very very steep hillside trail and boy did my ankles feel it. My soles felt great, but my ankles got a workout. Overall, I think I’ve found my new favorite hiking shoe!
As someone who has stuck with hiking BOOTS for all my day hikes and backpacking trips, I am stunned at how much I like these hiking SHOES from Salomon. The Salomon Cross Hike GTX shoes felt comfortable the first time I put them on. And they still feel good - on hikes rocky and rooty, dry and muddy. up and down. They also excelled on an overnight backpack on the Appalachian Trail, which included a 9-mile day. I feel as assured in the Salomons as I had in my boots. They grip the ground very well. No slips. And... NO, I HAVEN'T TWiSTED MY ANKLE - something I thought would be inevitable without the support of a boot. This is a game-changer. Other points of interest: * The Salomons are a full pound lighter than my boots. I even use them as my camp shoes (with the laces loosened), which saves me another 7 ounces. * So far, they've stayed dry (from the outside). There's what looks like an extra coating about 1-2 inches high around the shoes. I haven't yet hit any major wet spots, however. They do have Gore-Tex, so maybe the entire shoe will repel water (from the outside). * Given a choice, I'd rather have hiking shoes - or boots - without waterproofing. They're still going to get damp from the inside, via my feet sweating (I'm wearing the same socks as with the boots - toe socks and Merino wool socks). Better to let the shoes dry on their own. That being said, the Salomons dried a lot faster than my boots do. That would lead to another game-changer: putting on DRY shoes in the morning on a backpack. * I'm getting used to the Salomon laces, though I'd be just fine with the traditional sort. The end part doesn't always stay tucked under as it should; I worry that it'll catch on a low-hanging twig. * I thought these shoes looked a bit dorky - sky blue, with black and tan accents. But I actually received several compliments on them while hiking! No one ever praised my leather-top traditional hiking boots... * From what I've read about hiking shoes versus boots, I figure the Salomons will wear out sooner than the boots. But they are cheaper than the boots so it may even out. I'll be keeping my boots - they're the better choice when I'm out doing trail maintence. But I'm looking forward to a summer and fall of hiking and backpacking with the Salomons.
The Cross Hike were a replacement for my very comfortable X Ultra 4 Gore-tex which had developed a hole in the tongue after a few wears. The Cross Hike were not as comfortable as the X Ultra but I kept them as they appeared to fit, and were the only other shoe Salomon produce which are waterproof with a high level of support. The first time I wore them I developed a pain under my left foot. I now wish I had opted for a direct replacement of the X Ultra, or got a refund from the retailer, as there is no way I can wear these. I can't understand it as I have worn Salomon for several years, with no problems and love my current Quest 4 Gore-tex.

I bought these originally based on reviews and was not disappointed. They are my everyday shoes for everything from hiking to running to running errands. I have the light green and have not experienced the odor problem noted by others. I have about 600 miles of trails on them plus whatever when running errands etc...I find the arch is perfect, traction on rocky rough trails excellent, and support for my ever changing feet excellent. As I age I am finding my feet are changing and very happy I took a chance on these. I love them so much I just purchased another pair as well as the boot version for snowy conditions that are coming (hopefully).
These are the perfect shoes for springtime hiking in Colorado! I wore them while hiking in mud, shallow water crossings, and melting snow and stayed comfortable and dry all day long. The Cross Hikes have great traction which allowed me to walk across slippery logs without falling in! I love that the laces tuck away into the tongue so I didn't have to mess with muddy laces at the end of the day. I typically wear a size 9.5 but have to go down to 8.5 in Salomon shoes. The sizing of the Cross Hike is very similar to the Speed Cross running shoes.
I took these up North to the Sierra Nevada before the snow melted. I used them for the first time to hike to Kearsarge Pass. As always with my experience of Salomon shoes, these were comfortable and did not require breaking in. The traction was so good that I didn't feel the need use my microspikes. I would definitely recommend hiking with these in snowy/ wet conditions. My socks stayed dry and my feet were comfortable the entire hike. I ordered my usual size but found they were as bit loose, so consider sizing down.
