The Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX is by far the best pair of hiking shoes I ever own. I have to give it 5 stars although the sizing is a bit weird. I wear 6.5 for Nike, NB, Vans, Asics, etc but I bought 5.5 for this pair, as many previous reviews said the size was big. Size 5.5 fits really well for me as I have long and narrow feet. The shoes are very lightweight, have a strong grip, and have great support for my ankles. Believe it or not, I did not break in these shoes. I bought them in June 2021 and they arrived a few days before the summer trips. I wore them for back-to-back hiking in Utah and Colorado. I also like the waterproof feature.
I bought these in hopes that they would last and perform as well as the X Ultra 3 - which lasted me a good two years through 250+ km of trails in the mountains. Unfortunately, these lasted about a month out of the box before the seams fell apart and opened up completely around the toe box. An additional month in and the "lugs" were flattened to the point where the sole was smooth at the front of the shoe. This is very unsafe especially when in the middle of a hike where traction is actually needed. Otherwise, the lugs actually fell off and it began to feature negative lugs. Absolutely would recommend if you would like to try hiking in flats masquerading as hikers or if you like your feet to be air conditioned during your hike.
I purchased these boots to help me train for and hike the Camino Santiago- they were my first ever hiking boots and I was nervous about the sizing- luckily I think they may run a little big? I trained for 5 months and then I hiked 207 miles up through Portugal and into Spain through pouring rain and the wettest Fall they had seen in 90 years. Even when totally waterlogged they were still comfy. I splashed through huge puddles and up rocky mountain and forest paths. Never had a blister and my feet never hurt. Also I felt good traction while on different surfaces. I hiked 12-20 miles per day and I never worried about my boots. Would definitely recommend!
I liked the shoe but unfortunately this model ran too wide for my foot. I felt as if they were sliding around during my hike and I had no stability so I had to return them. If you have a foot that's on the wider side I think you will like these. Loved the look of these and they were not a heavy shoe which I liked as well.
So these were a bit more in price compared to my previous Solomon boots. I was ok with that because they did look more durable and waterproof. I work outside Monday-Friday and walk 4 miles a day on flat grass…they made it 4 months then started leaking and the left sole is completely falling off. I think the cheaper pair of Solomon’s made it just as long but we’re more comfortable so definitely not worth the price point for how well the held up. This pair is kinda lunky for my body size and that might be because it’s hard to pull the laces tight around the ankles. The pair I had previous were Solomon Gore-Tex, they eventually leak too but I’d rather wear them if I have to replace my boots every 4 months.
I bought these boots several weeks ago. I have worn them on several shorter hikes. The boot feels great....at first. The fit becomes very sloppy as I walk. I am not sure, but I think the shoe laces have a lot to do with the sloppiness. They seem to loosen up quite a bit. This is unacceptable in a hiking boot because no one wants to stop and tighten their boot laces every 20 minutes. I wrote to Solomon Customer Care about this problem and did not receive a response. I know I can try to just replace the shoelaces, but it makes me mad given the expense of these boots and the lack of customer service response to the issue
To my dearest boots, a love story. You are indestructible. You are actually waterproof and have handled all my splashing about perfectly...unless submerged (duh)...I've fallen in creeks wearing you a couple of times. You got soaked but only because water got in through the top where you are obviously not waterproof. You dried out so nicely! Your soles are very grippy and provide a lot of stability. I would fall in many more creeks if you were not so sturdy. I notice how much your grippy soles help me get up steep sections of trail or around tree roots and rocks on my way down to the creeks we fall in together. Remember when I wore you at a very muddy event where I subjected you to being caked in inches of soggy mud for 3 days? You stayed dry on the inside the whole time. This is really where my love for you became unbreakable. Another time I actually anticipated slugging through water with you and wanted to know how much you could handle before we were stuck outside of your capacity in the wild so I submerged the lower half in a sink full of water to see how long it took for water to get inside. Roughly a couple minutes and still then, only damp. You also clean off well. After the muddy event, I put you under the bath tub faucet and ran water inside and out to clean you. And again, you dried well and looked like you had only been through normal wear even though you survived an apocalypse. However, not everyone is perfect and my darling, X Ultra 4 Mid GORE-TEX boots, that unfortunately includes you. Your laces loosen over the course of a hike and I wish they would stay tight. You are warm which can sometimes be too warm during a summer hike so sometimes I use foot powder/baby powder in my socks. But it makes you really nice for cold camping. I cannot wait for our future endeavors. All my love, M
I love the look of these hiking boots and they really do feel comfortable the minute you put them on...however.... after 4 or 5 miles, my feet start to ache a little bit. At this point, that is when I usually buy a new pair, however, this is happening with these...brand new! Also, and this is weird, I've never had this happen before, but there have been multiple times the top hook at the ankle has gotten caught with the other shoe??? when I've been hiking. Fortunately, I haven't fallen, but it's a bit concerning the top hook is right at the ankle, so in tight places, it has gotten caught. Could probably use a tool to make it stick out less.
I tried 2 pairs of these shoes. One pair was hurting me on the left foot. The other pair was hurting on the right foot. After a careful studies of the problems. I found the tongue (where the shoe laces are) were in different sizes and sewed in different positions. I think it only happened in Wide and this model.

I liked these boots for comfort but 3 weeks past the return date they both developed cracks on the top of the foot near the front. I haven't used them that hard so I am disappointed.
