When I originally bought these boots, they fit so well that I bought another pair for when the first pair wore out. After many, many miles on the first pair, primarily rugged trails in the Sierra Nevada, the soles finally gave out and started peeling off. Hydrolysis, they told me. I pulled out the second pair I had saved, and within 50 miles, the soles on one of those began to separate and disintegrate as well. So as much as I love the fit, after my experience and after reading others' reviews about these and the 520s, I'm calling them an overall disappointment. I feel lucky that they didn't fall apart 20 miles away from the trailhead.
Hands down the best boots I've ever worn! To start with, I have low volume B/C width feet. They're very flat, and they pronate very badly. Comfort. After finding the right insoles (Superfeet Trailblazer) to take up the right amount of volume and to provide the right amount of support, these boots fit like a glove. They don't slip, slide, or shift around my feet. I don't get any blisters, hot spots, or pressure points. Also, they absorb shock really well, thanks to the TPS system, so your feet stay very comfortable. THESE DO REQUIRE A BREAK-IN! Don't buy these and go on a thru-hike next week. It took me 160 miles (or about 80 hours) to break these in. They're extremely rigid when you first get them, and they may be a bit uncomfortable. However, once broken-in, the leather is extremely soft and pliable and flexes in all the right places. Support. These have excellent support thanks to the thick, rigid midsole and thick leather upper. Traction. There's not much to say here. It's a thick Vibram outsole, which works really well on varied terrain. Sizing. These boots run long and narrow. You probably don't need to size up in these like you commonly need to in other boots. I wear a size 10 in Converse, and I purchased a size 10 in these. They fit perfectly. Temperature. These have a Cambrelle nylon liner. Cambrelle nylon expands in heat, releasing more heat to cool you down; it contracts in cold weather, which traps in heat to keep you warm. It works great. Despite being a full-leather boot, my feet have stayed cool during the hot summer months here. I've yet to test them during full-on winter conditions, but I'm very confident in them. Durability. The leather for most of the boot is between 2.6 mm and 2.8 mm thick. That's insane. They're very sturdy, and I've no doubt they're going last a very long time. Waterproofing. These boots are water-resistant. They do not have a waterproof membrane, like Gore-Tex. However, they are completely leather. This is a perfect combination to me. Because these lack a Gore-Tex membrane, they are MUCH more breathable than many other boots. Since they're full-grain leather, they can easily be waterproofed with a wax. This leaves you with a truly breathable, waterproof boot. You will have to retreat them every now and again, but the maintenance is worth the benefits of breathability and comfort. DISCLAIMER: These boots use a polyurethane midsole. The reviews claiming the soles fall off are likely due to misuse. Polyurethane is prone to hydrolysis, a chemical reaction where water trapped in the pores of the midsole rots and crumbles the midsole. This is avoided with frequent use. Frequent use pushes the water out of the pores and prevents hydrolysis. You CANNOT buy several pairs of these and store them for later. All the ones not in use will suffer from hydrolysis. If you buy multiple pairs, rotate them often. Overall, these are incredible boots, and I can't recommend them enough. They're comfortable. They're sturdy. They grip various terrains well. They're friendly in both hot and cold environments. They can easily be waterproofed. Take care of them; they'll take care of you.
Another case of double sole separation. Agree with review that stated boots cost more than a dollar per mile. Took all the tape and bandage material i had with me to get safely out of Desolation. Of course the uppers are beautiful craftsmanship but so what. Almost started laughing with positive review that inserted disclaimer regarding water infiltration. It's a boot! Sadly off to the trash bin. Sadly...Adios to Asolo.
So this is the third pair of these boots I have owned, along with several other styles of Asolo boots. This particular pair had the sole basically disconnect from the bottom of the boot, from the side. When Asolo was contacted I was told that moisture makes the soles fall off…..of a waterproof boot. This pair has very little wear and NO trail wear at all. A known problem to Asolo and NO help for a long time owner of their boots. Great boots as long as they never see moisture…….
I've had the boot for more than 5 years. Has been good for backpacking and hiking in snow. Surprised to see the sole coming away from the boot the other day. And then looking at reviews today I see that this is not an uncommon problem. Will not buy them again.
DON'T buy these boots. On 2 pairs the soles fell off on the trail; these are dangerous .
I've owned three pairs of these boots and backpack at least 60 days per year. Each has lasted 6 years. The first pair did delaminate the sole but that was because I fought a forest fire in them. The PU glue cannot take heat. If you dry them by a campfire or leave them in a car at baby killing temperatures or try to fight a forest fire, they will come apart. Otherwise they have been rock solid and comfortable out of the box. Just treat them with respect.
I really like these boots. This pair is a slightly different model than my previous two, but so far I like it every bit as much. They are my go to for hiking, but I appreciate the fit and support whenever I wear them. A few years ago I brought two pair of quality boots in to have resoled. The owner looked at the one pair and said “don’t bother“. She looked at the Asolo’s and said “these resole, they will last for years“. Many people prefer synthetic materials to leather, but In my experience I haven’t found them to hold up as well as the leather boots that I’ve owned.
Don't buy these boots. Bought to hike rim-to-rim in the Grand Canyon. The soles on both boots separated on Clear Creek trail, so used duct tape to return to Bright Angel campground. 9.8 miles and 4800 feet elevation gain to get out and these boots have fallen apart. Teva's for the hike out.
Sole fell apart after only 5 years of very light use. Asolo said they are only waranteed for 2 years. $325 boots should last more than 5 years.
