Great addition to my winter bike commute package
I like to ride my bike to work through the winter, and I was looking for a balaclava-like face covering without the entire hood going over the head. This fit the bill, so I went ahead and bought it. Even without the hood, the face protector fits snug through my entire half-hour commute. Ear coverage is also great and I didn't have cold ears through the whole ride. The bottom is also flared out and extends to the collarbone, so it blocks out any wind that get in between my jacket. With glasses, my entire face and neck is protected from the cold. And a huge plus, I haven't had any issues with glasses fogging. Initially, I thought the mesh cover over the mouth was weird; it's not insulated and is translucent, so someone can see your lips through the face protector. It turned out to be a really nice feature though, as it makes breathing while on the bike much easier than with a traditional balaclava or face cover. My only slight is that the extra pockets for the nose sits low, making it sometimes difficult to breathe easily through my nose. Extending the mesh cover a little bit higher would take care of this issue, but may also allow your nose to get cold. Overall, this is a great face cover for any aerobic activity. If you're looking for serious cold protection, you'd probably be better off with a full balaclava.
First impression
I just got this so I haven't yet tested it in cold weather but thiss the first impression: fabric feels soft and comfortable. Only the front panel is windproof. I bought l/xl and if I pull it up and over my ears it squeeze my nose flat and if I pull it up to bellow or mid ear height, I slides down. The chin seats comfortably in it. The mesh is big enough to easy breath through. Based on the package, it's designed for cold temp and lower to medium intensity activities.
uncomfortable
I have a larger head, so this probably doesn't apply to everyone, but when I put this on, it crushed my nose against my face so hard it started to become painful. I also have facial hair, and the front mesh at the mouth was thin enough to stick all my hairs out, making it look extremely awkward when I was wearing it. These may not be problems for people with smaller heads and no facial hair, but I'll be returning this.
Odd fit
Fits very odd, doesn't pull on well nor stay up. If using as a neck gator, it rubs on my face too much. I had my husband try it who is a size larger, and he had similar feedback. We snowboard and hike in the snow frequently and were looking to replace our existing ones, but this was a disappointment, so I am returning it. However, the ear warmer band works wonderfully.
