Better than plastic bins!

The 15L cubes are perfect for smaller items like headlamps, flash lamps, solar accessories, and batteries. I used the 25L to hold some of my camp kitchen and picnic accessories. The see-thru cubes are great because you can see inside in a glance. I also like the material because it makes it easier to pack all of the cubes inside without the space restriction of plastic boxes. The material is also great because it won’t break down in the weather elements over time in my garage, like plastic bins!

Good Quality, but Weird Sizes

I have one of each size. The 25L is being used to hold everything we need if car camping for a couple nights. The other two are slightly weird in size and I’m not sure what to put in them. I ended up using the smallest one to hold camp towels and sleeping bag liners. The middle size one is holding camp food. Using them as individual storage units is tough as they cannot support any weight on them. You need to make sure that whatever you put in them can be squished. They may be good for storing clothes for different people if taking a car camping trip. That being said, I’m not sure how protective the top mesh is and may result in very dirty clothes if not strategically packed in your rig.

A kit for every job

Packing in a family of six, we long ago broke our camp into small or smallest components and had a box, tub or bag for most every purpose. The intent of the cube system is not revolutionary, but the cubes are a really very nice approach to the idea, especially in conjunction with the Pack Away Bin system; their "nesting" design makes them a really useful addition to camp-gear storage, especially as related to that stuff that never leaves the camp gear collection. We are using cubes to stow dedicated camp gear and subdivide for needs/uses; flashlights, headlamps and batteries in a single 10L, as example. We find the 10 and 15L cubes more convenient (for most purposes) than the larger 25L and 25L adjustable cubes, although the adjustable cube remains appreciated for its versatility. The small volume cubes allow for discriminate partitioning of various camp tools, and encourage access to specific "kits" that no longer carry unnecessary or irrelevant items to the task at hand. I find this encourages less unpacking and reduces the likelihood of lost items, as it it encourages me to access only what I need (not to mention, improves the likelihood of finding what I need). This also improves inventory and stocking between trips. The beauty of the 10 and 15L cubes is that they pack very neatly and tidily into the Pack Away Bin, and REI has provided instructive schematics on how to pack the bin without wasted space. Careful consideration of needs and equipment should reduce the need for cubes to only the 10 and 15L bags, and only in quantities required for those “perfect fit” layouts designed by REI. Anyone familiar with tub and box packing is aware that they often end up wasting a fair bit of volume, as rarely do containers pack tightly and efficiently next to one another. Not so with these cubes; especially when packed inside the Stow Away Bin; wastage is now strictly a function of how much you pack in, or how poorly you do it. The bags themselves are rugged and reassuring. The materials appear to be of high quality and live up to the REI brand. I expect them to remain in service indefinitely. Mesh tops improve visibility and access; I don’t find labels of any variety necessary. Neither the Stow Away Bin or the cubes are rigid, so stuffing or even over-stuffing is an option, and I find that the cubes do sort of “trade volume” between one another depending on the contents and density packed in the various cubes. This translates to items adjacent to the storage kit as well; the non-rigid structure responds well to shoving some items in adjacent, should the occasion arise. In short, they’re very accommodating and really easy to use. I would suggest that these are not necessarily “reach and grab” type storage devices. Depending on how you use it, and especially in unison with the Stow Away Bin, I find that they lend themselves best to table top access, or deployment to the galley for extended use, for example. That said, they’re light and flexible enough to throw into the bottom of a pack, for example, if a grab-and-go occasion arose. Another reservation would be against storing liquids, especially chemicals, as I am not sure the cubes and bin will contain spills. We have retained some of our plastic tub storage for those purposes. That said, I expect to expand our collection of 10 and 15L cubes to accommodate the remaining kits in our camp, and properly fill up our Stow Away Bin. I’ll likely deploy our 25L cubes to stand-alone uses outside the bin. Another great product from REI; I’m happy to recommend their purchase!

Sturdy Construction, Great for Organization

Introduction: I was sent the REI Pack Away Bin, the 10, 15, & 25L Cubes, and the 25L adjustable cube as an REI Product Advisor. I will format the review so that the specific product related is reviewed individually at the top with the entire system reviewed below that. As such, much of the entire system review will be repeated between the different products. This product was taken on a trip to Fort Mountain State Park in Georgia with my wife and two dogs. We chose to take make the 6+ hour drive because it got us far enough south to celebrate New Years outdoors. It was in the 60s during the day there. We also went to Georgia because they have Pioneer Campsites which are three-wall shelter like you’ll find on the Appalachian Trail. Eliminating the need to have our own tent combined with the space-saving achieved through the Pack Away system is what allowed us to take the trip in a Hybrid sedan rather than our much less gas-efficient SUV. 10, 15, & 25L Cubes Top Line Reactions • Sturdy Construction • Window makes finding you gear easy • Variety of sizes for packing different items These cubes are an essential part of the Pack Away System. The largest cube the 25L is great for clothes and dry goods but that is not all you bring camping. We were in a hurry to use it so did not do this immediately, but I think the 15 or 10L cube would make an excellent first aid kit. The 10L bag is a natural toiletries kit too. If you are buying a pack away system I think at least one of these is important to purchase so you have somewhere to put your smaller items. Like all the Pack Away products this has a sturdy construction. The mesh window is not flimsy in the way some mesh is and the fabric and zippers will hold up well over the long-haul. REI Pack-Away bin system Top Line Reactions • Cubes pack in bin well. • Full windows allow quick item identification • 140L bin allows many cubes to be packed inside. This review is for the Pack-Away system. First, the 140L bin is supposed to hold 6 25L bins or 8 15L. We used it for clothes, dry good foods, and bedding. There are plenty of other possible uses although I would not recommend things with sharp corners. Even if it is strong fabric it’s still fabric. Fully loaded I think it probably weighed between 35-45 lbs. It was not hard to carry to our site, which was about a hundred-yard walk in. If that were too heavy or the walk longer, they make it extremely easy for two to carry with the many handles. Something that my wife commented was that it was very easy to repack to clean up at night, so you don’t have gear spread around potentially getting lost or dirty. The windows on the cubes are great because you can see what is inside but the mesh is of the thicker variety so it doesn’t have the potential to get a tear the way that some mesh can. One thing I should note is that I’ve never owned another pack-system. We used Tupperware totes, plastic toolboxes, and canvas shopping bags. To these, this system is immensely superior. Tupperware drives me crazy because while it’s sturdy it makes packing with limited space impossible. This is great because while its firm it has some give so if you needed to shove that extra sleeping bag on top of it in your trunk you can. That is helpful. Conclusion: Anyone who does a fair amount of car camping with multiple people will find this useful. Possibly it’s best use will be at home keeping the first-aid, flashlights, extra cord, rain gear, and all the other stuff you only use camping consolidated and ready to go with you on your next adventure. The product itself is high quality and it serves an excellent purpose.

I’ll probably buy more

Bought the 25L size to replace an aging mesh duffle bag to hold my MTB helmet, shoes, etc. So far, I’m happy with how it fits my helmet (not full-face) and size 11 shoes side-by-side, plus there’s plenty of extra room for smaller items like gloves, glasses, etc. I was also able to fit a smaller hydration pack (CamelBak Chase) without the cube bulging out at all. While I agree with another reviewer that some foam around the sides to give the cube some structure would be a nice touch, it’s not a deal breaker for me and I’ll probably pick up a few more of these in the future to organize gear.

Very happy!

I’m not your typical REI customer. At least I don’t think I am. I’m not a hiker or backpacker or outdoors person. I motorcycle camp on my BMW. These packing cubes work really well at storing and organizing my clothes and camping gear. They fit well in my panniers and I’m very happy with them. I can see what’s packed in each cube without having to open each one up beforehand. I have purchased several different sizes and they work well.

Helpful both in the house and on a trip

This was my first transition to modular packing, and I think I'm hooked. I'm really comparing it to my previous option which for many years has been a system of plastic tubs and bins. These soft-sided packing cubes do have pros/cons over the plastic tubs: they conform more easily to the strange shapes of cookware, flashlights, and other lumpy objects and therefore avoid wasted airspace and likely will reduce noisy clatter. However, I wonder if the hard-sided tubs help prevent breakage of my ceramic mugs, cooking knives, etc. I used a 25L, two 15L, and a 10L cube. Each has a strong nylon on five sides, with mesh on the top. The double zippers are robust and appear durable. The see-through mesh is helpful so that I can quickly differentiate which cube I need to pick based upon the contents. These four cubes easily hold all of our gear for car camping with a family of four.

Love these for organization fanatics

I really like these cubes for organizing our camping stuff. Prior we used a variety of plastic tubs and bags. But we have a small car and it made packing rigid tubs difficult. These are great and hold way more than they look like they would. While I do wish they were waterproof (maybe at least the bottom so you can sit them on like a wet picnic bench) I do love that you can glance in from the top and that I don't need to unpack them between trips because they can air out with the mesh.

Just a note about food storage...

An additional note, if you are storing food (like hot dog buns) in the mesh top packs I'd suggest storing the packs in the car. A ground squirrel chewed a small hole through the mesh top trying to get at my buns.
