The Fastest-Drying Mid-Layer for High-Output Adventures
The Black Diamond Coefficient Hoody is an exceptional mid-layer for high-output activities, offering the perfect balance between breathability, warmth, and moisture management. Whether you’re scaling a mountain, running, cycling, or pushing hard on the trail, this lightweight fleece keeps you comfortable without overheating. Compared to other popular options like Patagonia’s R1 Air and The North Face’s Futurefleece, the Coefficient Hoody stands out for one key reason: its drying speed. The fabric dries significantly faster than both competitors, making it a game-changer for those who need to stay dry during intense adventures.
Sizing way off, runs super small
I'm knocking off 2 stars right off the bat because the sizing is so bad. It's super annoying to wait for a product and then it costs me shipping to return it when BD can't get the sizing right. I float between a Medium and a Large depending on the brand style etc. I'm 6' ,170 , 40 inch chest. When I put this piece on I couldn't even close it. It was 3" from being closed that's how small it is. Actually, probably what a by the book small would be. Yet the arms are very long so if the next size up is same proportions the arms would be too long(I have long arms too) Beyond that it's ok, standard smooth face exterior gridded interior. Not worth the price. Overall really disappointing. Lastly, it was poorly repackaged as in a return. That's on REI.
Light and decently warm!
Bought as a mid layer for early / late season backpacking. Found to be exactly what I needed, with the athletic fit being perfect for layering. Full zipper does a great job in venting extra heat when needed too, and it's nicely packable. A+, highly recommended!
Perfect for cold conditions! The ultimate fit!
I bought this one for hiking, but I realized right away that it was the perfect garment for winter cycling! I get too hot in shells, so the slight air through of this hoody keeps me at the perfect temperature in the 35s to 55s. I took it hiking and was also amazed! Combined with a rain jacket is perfect when you are in the shade, but take the shell off while you're activelly moving and you are perfect. The red color litterally pops in every picture. Its perfect! I specially like the fit of the hood. Highly recommend this product
Better than the R1
This is a great lightweight mid layer fleece. It's very comfortable, well made, and a good slim cut. The hood is great too. It has a nice chest pocket and no side pockets which I like. Keeps it more streamlined and lightweight. I usually wear size M in BD such as my Recon shell. However, the M was too small and the L fits perfect while still being a close enough fit with a light layer below. I am 6'1" and 180lbs. I may buy another. I like it better than my R1s which are a great fleece as well.
Seven years and starting to show wear and worn every day a jacket is needed in NW Montana. That’s a lot of days!
I bought the regular jacket about 7 years ago as a second. Looked and looked for what might be wrong, never found anything. When I needed a jacket/coat year round this was on. If it was below 20’F I’d add a shell. About a year ago I put it in the dryer and the zipper puller broke off. Was going to try get it fixed, but it still just as easy to use up and down. I only wish they still offered it! Not a big hoody guy.
3rd one of these, and still a must-have!
I had the original generation, and destroyed it over time, Then I had the next GEN calmer and it was great but I lost it. I was happy to replace it with this one, and it is awesome! My only complaint would be the fabric face durability: it pills pretty quickly. Much less durable than a Patagonia R1, Which is made of very similar grid fleece. Otherwise it is awesome in fit and functionality!
Great comeback !
I own three of the previous versions of this sweater and rotate them through the cooler months of the year. I love them. They last and last. This new version seems to be of the same material quality so I hope it will hold up as well. The only thing I like more on the old version more than this was the cuff on the sleeves was different and more to my liking. 5'10 165 lbs and I wear a large.
A perfect mid-layer
I wore this over a merino wool base layer and under a shell during a week of ice climbing, and found it to be a perfect layering solution at least for me. I've since worn it in other situations and applications and it functions just as well there as well. But when i was researching how to layer for ice climbing in particular, this top was recommended and I was not disappointed!
Great lite mid layer
I’m glad I got the regular coefficient hoody vs the LT version. It's thin and the fleece texture on the inside breaths well. The LT version must feel like a sun shirt. This slim cut (fitted) jacket is perfect for high output exercise. This is not your typical thick fleece. Love the hood for under my climbing helmet and the thumb holes for running. I’m 6’ 197 lbs lean.
