This an unsolicited review of the Outdoor Research Active Sun Sleeves, size S/M (small/medium). I was on the fence about purchasing these online, I do not live near an REI or other brick and mortar store that sells these, due to the sizing chart information. For all practical purposes, I should have purchased the L/XL based on the OR website, see below. I am 65 inches tall, weigh 145 pounds with a muscular built. My biceps are 13.25-inches in circumference and my wrists are 7.25-inches. As much as I would like to believe that I would wear a L/XL size, which would certainly boost my testosterone and ego, I purchased the S/M. By purchasing the S/M, I may have hurt my ego a bit, but I did save on the return postage as the S/M fit just fine. In fact, I believe that the sizing chart is off by inches. I personally feel that the S/M would fit anyone with biceps as large as 14-inches. Also, the length of the sleeves are also quite long. The S/M start at my fingers and practically reach my “armpit”. So, if you are a “knuckle dragger” (someone that has very long arms) you may want to take a close look at the photos attached so you can decide the proper size that you may need. As for a review of the product, I cannot say enough about how much I like them. I wear them running, biking, hiking, and driving when it is just too warm to wear long sleeves and I do not have any of my sun-shirts available. They also look good when I am wearing other short sleeve shirts and I want to protect my arms from sun damage when I know I will be sitting outside dining or at a ball game. They do not look like some “add-on” that seems out of place. They do seem to keep my arms cooler when the weather is warm and I am exercising. This could be the wicking of the sweat and evaporation factor, which is nice because I leave them on thus protecting my skin for damaging UV light. I do caution you that when I wear them and it is cool outside, my arms seem to get cold. I like the gel palm pad dots that are incorporated for grip, and the bicep grips work as claimed. I like the thumb hole and finger loop which keeps the back of my hands protected when I am very active. If I do not want my hands covered, like when I am eating, the sleeves are easily rolled back over my hand and still look sharp. I own two-pair now and will not hesitate to purchase this product again when needed. I hope that the photos with this review are helpful.

the sleeves work find but I saw the same sleeves at another store for 10.00 less. This disturbs me because I don't like taken for granted just because REI feels they can charge more money for the same item. This is not nice.

Tore thin layer of skin off of my arm.

I bought these sleeve to help keep my arms cool while delivering mail. They were a little thicker than what I was expecting. They were fine yesterday when it was cloudy and 90°, but I do not believe they would have been too warm when it was 96° with a feel like temp of 110° the four days prior. But, my biggest qualm with these sleeves was when I took them off at the end of the day, the latex or whatever sticky material used at the top of the sleeve ripped a thin layer of skin off of my arm.

Wish I knew about these earlier

These are fantastic. I have a lot of sun damage on my arms, and I'm prone to skin cancer. I've been wearing a sun hoodie for a few years but sometimes that is still too hot for exercise in the summer. If you wear this with a short-sleeve shirt, you still get the advantage of natural venting under your arms. Wearing these actually feels cooler than bare skin. The S/M size fits me perfectly (female, 145 lbs, ave size arms). They stay up, even while playing tennis, yet aren't uncomfortably tight. The light grey is a nice innocuous color that goes with everything.

love these just too big

I’m glad I finally decided to try sleeves. I run every day (NJ) and bike commute (NYC) as well, and I was wearing long sleeve shirts, but was hard to keep on all of the time because of heat or change when commuting. These are perfect because when I’m done running or cooling off, I can just take them off. Or if I start in the dark, I stick in my pocket and put on when the sun comes up. When leaving work in a dress I just throw them on. Hard to get enough sun screen on my arms and not dirty my watch and all and this makes life so much easier (and less sun damage). They do feel cool, I love the finger options and rubber grips, my only only problem is too big on the biceps. I do this things where I double knot them tighter but if I stretch or hit a pothole or anything that changes my position, the knot unties and they fall right down. I’m female, 41 years old, 5’6” and 130 lbs and clear need to work out my arms to get some bigger muscles, but I need about 2 inches wider to work, which just is probably not possible. I’m used to the workaround now so I still love them, but can be annoying on some days.

Needs to be labeled as Men's Sizing

I'm 5'2" 100lbs and got the small/medium. The circumference of the sleeves needs to be 2 inches smaller in order to fit women. However the sun sleeves fit my husband, so we'll be keeping it.

Top QualWanted to love these sun sleeves

These are amazing sleeves. Well made, comfortable and cool. Unfortunately the small/medium is too large for me. Sadly they don't come in x-small it doesn't seem. So sadly will return without an exchange of size. Tried other brands at REI in size small and they seem true to size, at least for me. Bicep around 11.5 inches

great sleeve for sun protection while hiking...

I'm 5'3" and 128lbs. My arms and wrists are small so I purchased the S/M and there is no problem with them staying in place. I compared these to the REI brand and the Pearl Izumi and liked these the best as they are not "skin tight" on me and the "thumby" enables the sleeve to cover my hands, which is good because the sunscreen gets wiped off there anyway. They also feel just fine to push up to the wrist and just have coverage to the wrist, rather than over your hand. I like that I can just take them off and stash them away if I wanted, rather than wearing a long sleeve shirt. You can also wet the sleeves to keep cool. The light color will keep the hot Arizona sun from blazing on my arms. These will keep you cooler and protect your skin. It was great to go to REI and just try them on to compare brands. I think these are the most popular since there were only two pairs there, and I got the last S/M at the store by me. These sleeves are a great addition to my hiking gear wardrobe. I'm saying good bye to the sticky sunscreen on my arms. Oh, I also like that they are really long and go all the way up to my armpit if I position it that high and the wrist with the thumby still comfortably cover my hand and a little of my fingers. There is also a small elastic middle finger band that you can slip over your finger to hold the wrist/hand end in place. I recommend these!

Very nice, small size is too big

Love these, very light and cooling. They are way too loose for my small arms, I will have to figure out a hack to keep them from slipping down.

These are a godsend

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] These sleeves are absolutely the bomb. I'm a mail carrier in Arizona and these keep my arms from burning. The heather blue color is great and hides dirt super well. They stay up perfectly with the sticky band at the top. The material is quality and hasn't pilled or snagged on anything, and that's saying a lot because I put them through the wringer. I wet them throughout the day with ice water from my cooler and it's like having AC on my arms. Lastly, for sizing I would say the smaller one will fit more people than you might expect. I am a tall woman with long arms and was torn thinking I should get the larger size. But these are plenty long. Larger size is probably best if you have big biceps etc. I'll be using these for years to come (ordered 5 pairs) and I can't wait to get some more active ice gear for work.

Just perfect

These do exactly what I'd hoped: protect my arms and backs of hands from sun without making my arms feel like sweaty sausages. They stay down on my hands and up on my arms. The M/L fits a tad large for my beefy but short limbs, but that's a small quibble.
