I was skeptical due to the reviews. I tend to run warm so I was worried about soaking in sweat on my runs below 32 F. Took it out on a 2 F run with a midweight base layer with incendo pants with a midweight base layer as well. Stayed warm for my entire route. Warmest temp I've ran with this jacket is 27 F with just a shirt under it and never had any problems with getting too sweaty. While opening the front pockets are awesome for venting, I wish that this jacket came with armpit zippers. Also as a running jacket, It would've been nice if it had more reflective items on it.
I own quite a few running jackets but the Argus is by far my favorite for cold winter running. It fits close and weighs almost nothing but it keeps me warm when temperatures are below 30 degrees F. I've worn it in single digit temps. with just a long sleeve base under it and stayed completely warm. Above 30 and I switch to the Trino. I do agree with the earlier reviewer about fabric durability. After wearing this jacket this past winter with a hydration vest I now have a hole worn in a friction spot on the back. Hence the 4 and not 5 stars. This piece does what it claims and I will get another if the back material is strengthened.
The reviews that complain about poor breathability in the arms are correct, but I just don’t care. I’ve been running in harsh NH winters for over a decade and I’ve never been comfortable before. I wore this jail jet this morning on an hour run in 23 degree F with 20mph winds, and I felt absolutely toasty the entire time. I only wore a thin long sleeve base layer with a summer running T-shirt over that under the jacket. it’s amazing. I was soaked with sweat when I got home Under the jacket but I never got the least bit cold. If you run in extreme cold, I highly recommend this jacket. Meant for extremely cold running.
I've worn this jacket in the Uk for winter running and it performs extremely well in cold, damp, inhospitable conditions. I primarily bought it though to wear in an Arctic Ultra marathon - the Rovaniemi 66km. Temperature fluctuated between -5C to -25C and the jacket [with just a polartec base layer beneath] was phenomenal. It kept me warm and regulated my temperature and in doing so prevented sweat building up which was extremely useful in the Arctic. When the temperature really dropped I used the Incendo hoody over it to create a fully windproof layer and was again impressed. Top kit for cold days.
I signed up for a May marathon which meant lots of training in February and March in chilly Ottawa. This jacket delivers suprising warmth and excellent wind protection without being bulky in any way. Back pockets very handy for extra gloves, hat, or headband. I could fit into a small, but opted for a medium to allow for additional layers when necessary. With the right layering under my argus jacket I had no trouble doing 10+k runs even in -30 degree conditions. Jacket dumps heat well. My only challenge at these temperatures was my ipod battery freezing in the front pocket - easily rectified by moving the ipod into a base layer pocket. I fully recommend the argus jacket to anyone contemplating cold weather running.
I have several Arcteryx product and love pretty much all of them. I bought this jacket because I thought it was the same as one I own. It is not. I think it has a really poor design in the back waist. The inner lining in the back is not connected in the back to the outer lining. When I pull the drawstring, it looks really sloppy. My other jacket is connected all the way around and in the whole lining. It is much better. Maybe there is a reason, but I don't know why they would design it that way. If I had know it was like this, I would not have purchased it.
So far I really like this jacket. It is surprisingly warmer than I thought it would be. I run warm but went out the other day in 35 degrees and sunny and it was almost too warm. It is trim fit but my biggest complaint is the forearms are really tight. Other than that I like the pocket lay out and dump pockets at the back. One other improvement would be cable loops on the inside. It's great that there are ports in two of the pockets for run headphones but the cables flop around inside regardless. I bought a size large. 5'9", ~190, Athletic build (Crossfitter).
It's a well designed jacket and love the idea. Pockets a plenty and well placed. However, when I use it as a midlayer (with a thin wool baselayer and an Alpha SV) for mountaineering (high output, fast paced), it soaks up my sweat like a sponge and loses warmth. So bad that in wet weather glaciated climbs, I'm completely soaked on the INSIDE, despite wearing my Alpha SV and I had to keep up the pace and avoid breaks just in order to stay warm. I use my old Delta zip instead and it works so much better in that it doesn't absorb any sweat.
I´ve tried several jackets before from ASICs, Nike, not one comes close to the clever design, superior materials used in the Argus Jacket. Not only is this garment well designed , each fabric is positioned so that you get the best out of your sport, no overheating while running, protection/isulation where is needed. The DWR fabric makes it perfect for some light rain, its a great jacket to go out running here in Germany. I have used it also as mid layer while hiking in the Alps.. it works just as well.
I was super excited to get this jacket, and the workmanship is superb. Ran several times in sub zero celcius temperatures, first with a long sleeve underneath but it's warm enough with just a t-shirt at even -8 C. The real issue though is with the breathability of the sleeves. There is a massive condensation build-up on the lower arms even after a 1 hour run, up to the point where sweat pours out (not even drips) into your gloves when your arms are down. On longer cold runs, I've had ice (!) build up between the insulation layer and the shell material on the lower arms. Granted, you do stay warm while moving, but this is a real design flaw that does seem to occur with other customers as well. Not sure if I will return in exchange for the Trino jacket, which seems to be even less breathable.
