Great Pack Highly Recommend
I initially bought this because I had a neck injury and couldn't carry a day pack/bladder with shoulder straps, but having now used this regularly. I don't think I would go back to a regular day pack. I was looking for a way to carry my lunch, 2litres of water, snakebite kit, blister packs, snacks, Leatherman, sunscreen, hand sanitizer. I used this over a 9 day (day hiking only no camping on track) 135km hike and it made my life so easy. #1 I had to prioritize what I packed = I carried less weight #2 My water was very easy to reach #3 the weight felt very stable right over my hips as I was going up and steep and rocky ground. #4 I had no pack on my back meaning I got a lot less sweaty and my clothes breathed much easier making for a much more comfy hike #5 when the weather was changing between rain and fine I could strap the pack over my coat, when it wasn't raining just take my arms out of the coat and let it hang over my waist meaning I could keep cool and not sweat. In the rain just put my arms back in and BAM raincoat. I now use it for every hike. It isn't large enough to really fit the rain jacket as well as lunch and everything else, but I could easily attach a jacket by putting it in a crush sack and strapping it to the top, this does reduce you access to the top pocket, but I mainly only stored lunch and other thing you take out for stops. The Good Can swap out the bottles it comes with to larger bottles to increase your water carrying to 2 liters. The bottles it came with are durable comfortable and easy to reach without taking the pack off. Plenty of pocket so you know where to put things and accessible belt pockets. Good sized main pocket fit a good sized hiking lunch. Quality, zips ties and straps solid under load. The Bad If it is very loaded either with water (+2L) or other stuff the belt can sit across you bladder, meaning you need to pee more. but this only happens if you are pushing it past the weight it was designed to carry.
Ideal for Dog-Walking
This is an outstanding product for dog-walking. I volunteer at a local shelter, and take many of their dogs on outings. This waist pack is ideal for carrying a supply of treats in the zippered side pockets, and two 16oz vacu-flasks of ice-cold water in the bottle-holders at the back (they're not big enough to hold 1-litre flasks, but I've found that 16 oz is fine for my purposes). I can even attach a collapsible plastic bowl onto one of the loops using a small carabiner, and there's room for other items - for me or for my companion - in the large back pocket. Since the side-pockets are zippered - and easily closed or opened on the move - the dogs can't get their snouts into them to get at the treats, but I can get the treats out so easily because of the way they are positioned and secured. After just a little practice, it's also easy to pull out and return the water containers into their pockets without having to take the whole pack off. I also love the fact that this pack has a very stiff frame; that means that the bottles are held firmly in place, and don't droop down and drop out of their pockets as I'm putting the pack on. Despite its stiffness, it's very light and easy to manage. I have no complaints about the product, but I do wish REI would offer it in some other colors. The blue is OK, but Osprey also makes it in Black and in Green; why can't they be made available too?
Great hiking pack
Got it mainly for walking the dogs on extended outings - lots of water, treats, deterrant, keys, phone, and there's plenty of room for an extra layer. This is perfect for that! I'll also be using it for day hikes for water, snacks, and an extra layer instead of my trusty Lowe Alpine Contour Runner backback because this stays out of the way and covers much less surface area on my back. It is much more comfortable for carrying the bare essentials than a little backpack. Also, I didn't really want to buy the skinny bottles it's holders are made for so I smooshed my regular-sized 32oz nalgenes in it. It's tight and the seams might end up stretching a bit, but it seems very sturdy and will be fine. The bottles pictured don't hit my elbows or arms. When it's loaded and cinched up, I hardly notice it's on. Very satisfied. Go for it.
Nice - Takes Getting Used To
This waistpack has a ton of room which is good and bad. Good because you can load it up, bad, because you can load it up. So be careful how much weight you get into this guy or you'll find yourself having lower back discomfort after about 5 miles. Overall: Great hip belt pockets - ample for snacks, cell phone, headlamp, GPS, etc. Great water bottle "pockets" for 750ml smart water bottles - easy access Great exterior pocket for TP, wallet, key, etc. A bit heavy for a waistpack but if you're heading out for 15-20 miles it's awesome to be able to stuff a mid layer, rain jacket, beanie, snacks, headlamp, etc for the day and this does the trick without the need for carrying a full day pack.
Easy loaded and carrying access
I use a 50 liter camera backpack and wanted something light. This is unbelievable how much gear i can bring holding a lense, binoculars, teleconverter in main, plus gaiters, but also bars or snacks. Then in outside mesh put keys, wallet, other small not accessed items. Left side camera batteries, memory cards, microfiber cloths, lens pen, shower cap if rains. Right side pocket i put tissues, off repellant wipes, sanitiser, a ponch plastic that folds small for rain and my squeeze packs, energy electrolyte chews etc. I then put two 32 oz water bottles in holders, clip my thermocell to back strap flap area and camera with lens is over shoulder with black rapid so to Change to small lens for landscape I leave big 2-600 on black rapid. Simple spinning talon around waist to access rear pockets. So happy i got this and to protect camera and lens traveling i wrap with Velcro padded wrap.holds tons of gear!!!
great for day hikes
I had to buy an Osprey Talon after seeing my friend use one on a day hike! I think he uses it for mountain biking but it’s perfect for getting through a long hike. I use the straps to buckle my hat/boots. The pockets are great for holding a little snack/phone/wallet/keys, and I prefer the bottle holders over the hydration packs, as they’re easier to clean. The only downside: the water bottle holders are not large enough for a 32 oz nalgene, but it’s a very small complaint.
Sturdy but doesn't work for me
This is a strongly built but lightweight lumbar pack. Judging by the materials and construction it should be quite durable. The back panel has a rectangular stiffener, 8-1/2" wide by 7-1/2" high. It does not appear to be removeable, although the underside of a zipper is visible which could possibly be used for this purpose (though the talon is sewn into an inner space). I tried this lumbar pack for two day-long mountain hikes, using it primarily to carry a pair of lightweight insulated water bottles (GSI Microlite 570s). Throughout the hikes I could feel what I think was the bottom edge of the stiffener pressing against my hips. I tried various adjustments but there was always some discomfort. By the time I started downhill on my second hike the pack was feeling very uncomfortable. Removing the water bottles and hand-carrying them worked well, as there was almost nothing else in the pack. The water bottle pockets have a bungee cord to help retain the bottles. The cord is meant to go around the bottle, and is attached at four points to the pack. Replacing a water bottle in the pocket while wearing the pack is made very difficult by the placement of the cord. I needed to use two hands, one to keep the bungee from getting caught under the bottle. I also had an issue with the quick-release buckles which are used to adjust the belt length. Just touching them, even by accident, sends the entire belt whipping through, dropping the pack. This doesn't happen if the pack is empty, but with the weight of two water bottles it's an all too frequent occurence.
Love this little pack
Love this pack. Roomy enough for everything I need on short day hikes. I purchased the only color in store and was assured by two separate store associates that the pack is unisex. I am 5'6" and wgt 125 with a slim athletic build and the pack fits perfectly. Most of the time I didn't feel the pack on my hips, that's how comfy it is. It held my wallet, phone and two water bottles, and later in the hike as the day warmed, I attached my gloves and jacket. It also held my hiking sticks for part of the hike. I wish I had purchased a long time ago.
The best fanny pack
Give Osprey credit for continuous improvement! I own the previous generation Talon 6 and this one is significantly better. The pockets on the hip belt are bigger and hold a cell phone with ease now. The water bottle holders are deeper and more robust making it easier to grab a 23 oz water bottle on the go and is more secure. And the hip belt is more comfortable. Don't know how to make a fanny pack any better
Excellent waist pack!!
I use the Osprey Talon 6 Waistpack on 2-4 mile walks/hikes with my dog. It's great for carrying treats, waste bags and emergency items. In the summer, the water bottle holders will be very helpful-one for the dog and one for me. I especially like how well the straps stay adjusted-unlike some other waist packs I've used.
