Sizing Notes

Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".

PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and Âľ inch shorter in total rise.

TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.

Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.

Short shorts and lost pocket
I got 2 pairs of these pants, to replace the older generation version I had for years. I liked the more refined fit, and the fabric is amazing - stretchy, sturdy and water resistant. Really - water just brushes off unless you're in a downpour. BUT - the shorts are really short, and you lose the cargo pocket when you zip off lower legs. I was uncomfortable hiking in the shorts, and it was no good to have to move things from the cargo pocket and put them ... where? Come on REI - not all women want short shorts, and that extra pocket needs to stay with the pants even when you unzip. I'll probably keep wearing, but I don't love them and won't buy again.

Best Hiking Pants, But So Many Problems :(
For the life of me, I cannot find a pair of convertible pants as comfortable as these with drawstrings on the legs. Even men's pants offer few options with drawstring legs. I've tried pants with button/roll-up legs, but there's simply too much fabric for tucking into my hiking boots that it bunches up and puts pressure against my ankle bones, even more painful when the button itself presses into my ankles. I tried cheaper ones that friends have recommended and they're too flimsy when I put anything in the pockets, they start tugging down. I wish there were more convertible pants with drawstring legs so I could find a better pair than these. The first problem upon trying them on was the length. I have a 31" inseam, so the 29" inseam justttt fits into the tops of my mid-height hiking boots. But even then, if I bend my legs, the pant legs move and expose my ankles. If I wear regular shoes or ankle hiking socks, there's a 1 inch gap of bare skin for bugs to attack or plants to brush or cold air to hit. So I can only wear these with crew length hiking socks or taller inside my mid-height hiking boots. Which is whatever, I wear those shoes all the time anyway. If you're like me and store you're phone in the zippered pocket, there's 2 problems here. First, walking in cities, it's the perfect height for a child pickpocket to unzip and snatch. I have to lean slightly over to grab my phone out. So I put it in a money belt on long-distance public transit and sideways in a hand pocket in cities (I had a guy try to reach in there on public transit once, and because the pockets are skinny and my phone was deep enough and angled, I caught him easily before he could touch my phone). Having a zip pocket in hands reach would be more ideal. The second problem with the location of the zippered pocket is when you remove the pant legs, you have to find a new location for anything you store in there. The next problem, also concerning pockets, became apparent a few weeks into wearing: the pockets fell apart. I bought these pants October 2021. I wore them for 3 weeks in Ecuador most everyday. I wore them again for 2 weeks in Africa in January 2022, and noticed a small hole on the corner of one of the hand pockets. I didn't think much of it because the hole was small and I don't store anything than small in that pocket. I then spent 3 weeks in Central America in February 2022 and 1 week in Ecuador again in March 2022. By this point, the stretchy seams where the hand pockets open were coming undone. I thought, okay I'll just sew the edges. It won't look great, but it should hold. Then, in October 2022 I wore them again for a little over a week in US National Parks. The entire side of one of the back pockets has come completely unattached. I only use that pocket for temporary storage of my phone or sunglasses when I need my hands free quick. I thought okay, guess I'll have to sew this pocket too... Then I thought, wait a minute. How long are hiking pants supposed to last? The pockets first started tearing after less than 5 weeks. By week 10, I had sewn the corner of 1 front pocket and the stretchy openings on both front pockets, and the back pocket was now unusable. Not to mention, somewhere around week 5, I noticed fraying around the waist button. Not sure if it's thread or the fabric bit looped through the button, but it makes me worried that button will fall off soon. The loop thingy at the waist is also thinning, but that can be because I'd hook my 1L water bottle to it, and I don't think it's made for that much weight. I really don't think I overuse the pockets! I use the zipper pocket the most, and that's the only one that seems fine so far. I'm planning a 6+ month trip to Latin America next month, so hopefully I can find a better pair of convertible pants with drawstring legs, and a longer inseam than these. If not, I'll probably settle for sewing the rest of the ones I have and buying these in a different color. Hopefully if I end up settling for these again, they'll survive more than 10 weeks into my travels. Maybe there will be better options in Latin America.

Got curves? These will work!

I recently purchased these pants and while I haven't hiked with them yet I can say that they fit great, they're comfortable, and worth the money. I am tall and a curvy/athletic build and was having a hard time finding any hiking pants that fit me. These have stretch which is really nice, the waist also has an elastic waistband - and a drawstring. They zip off to shorts and for my height, they're the perfect length. I also like that the ankles can be tightened using a little cord at the bottom. They don't go past my ankles like the model in the photo, they probably sit about 2-3 inches above my shoe. I got the Medium and they are a normal fit, I could wear a thin pair of long underwear under them comfortably. NOTE* There is a big difference between the Medium and the Large, I tried the Large on and it was way too big for me in the waist and legs.

Wonderful On AND Offsite

I bought these for my archaeology field schools this summer and I absolutely love them. They fit wonderfully and look great on and offsite, long or short. However, I think the one area in which the design could be better is in the tiny s-shaped hook that secures the drawstrings at the ankles. Within a couple of weeks, the right hook fell off and got lost while washing them. I took the pants to the local REI and the piece couldn't be replaced. I found that the s-shaped hooks that came in old RainbowLoom kits worked MUCH better than the piece that came with the pants initially. Looking forward to see how well they hold up as I continue my fieldwork.

Roomy and comfortable!

These are the best convertible pants I have found after trying several pairs of other brands. The pants are loose and comfortable to move around it. When you swap to shorts they are not down to the knee like most others, a great length. Only downfall is having to take off shoes to transition to shorts.

Perfect for Curvy Petite Women

It took me two shopping trips and a good cry to find these hiking pants. I'm a petite and curvy woman: only five feet tall and a major hourglass shape. These hiking pants are amazing. I would say they were more of a high-waisted fit on me (and not midrise) and the legs felt more like a jogger-style cinched ankle (rather than straight). I appreciated the stretchy waistband, waist drawstring, and zipper + button because it made customizing the fit of the hiking pants much easier.

Favorite Convertible Pants EVER

These pants are the best! My favorite thing about them is the length of the convertible shorts. They're shorter than most convertible pants which is great for me because I have thick thighs and most convertible shorts are too tight on my thighs and look awkward as shorts. They're not too short though - I didn't have problems with my thighs rubbing. I also really like that when you wear them as pants you can cinch the bottoms and it gives them a cool jogger look and helps keep your pants from dragging on the ground and getting dirty. They're also super stretchy and flattering. I have a 29 inch waist and 42 inch hip/glutes and the medium was perfect on me. I'm anxiously waiting for a restock so that I can snag them in blue. I really hope that they make more colors!

My new Favorite pants!

Love these hiking pants! I ordered them a size larger as I like a loose and comfortable fit and I notice REI women’s clothing runs a little small. There are adjustment straps for the waistline and the button is reinforced with nylon straps rather than thread which makes it unlikely to weaken over time. They are light and stretchy and water repellent. Proof that you get what you pay for.

Impressed

Thank you for deep pocket that can hold stuff. So happy. Maybe consider thin zippers on all pockets so less like to lose stuff.

Okay, sure miss old style

These pants rate an "okay" only. Will not plan to buy again until REI updates the model again. I do like the fabric and the fit, along with the zip off legs feature. BUT seriously, who designed these? An interior tie just does not work for women in the outdoors. How many times do I step behind a tree in the outdoors? Many. What a pain! Please bring back the web belt from the prior model of Sahara pants. BUT bring it back with a snap at the waist, not a button. Why waste putting in a button hole, and taking the thoughtful step of adding an extra button, when snaps are easier to use with cold fingers.

Comfy!

Most women's convertible pants have a horrible zipper where the lower leg detaches. They dig into your thigh or are scratchy because they didn't bother to encase the zipper in fabric on the inside and outside of the leg (like they do with men's pants). These are super comfortable when you put them on. I have not hiked in them yet and a zipper at the ankle so you can remove the lower portion without taking off your boots would be nice. But first impression is, these are a winner....even for a woman with bigger thighs. I bought a 10 that fits fine, but I might try the size down to see if those would work since I am between sizes.
