First new bike in 20 years, and I picked a good one. All the dudes in the bike shop were drooling when I picked it up. Everything you would expect from a Salsa bike, the color is way better than the pictures. More of an avocado green, the 2.8 tires roll over everything and have lots of grip. The dropper post is wonderful, and my bike came with pedals. Cheap plastic platform pedals, but was nice to be able to ride it when I picked it up. My local REI was out of stock for the raceface pedals I wanted to add. Called the day before I picked it up to have it set up as tubeless, for $40.
I purchased this Salsa bike with 27.5+ tires to replace the vintage Salsa MTB I had stolen this past year. The quality and versatility of this product is superb and the medium size fits my 5'7" height well. I plan to use this MTB for local trails and I will outfit it for bike packing. The extra brazed on attachment points are a plus. Be aware that in order to install a rear rack, you need to buy a special 35mm seat clamp and a bolt set to attach it to the rear wheel hub assembly. Both of these item are available through Salsa distributors yet they are very hard to come buy. All the bike shops I tried seem to be out of stock.
This review would have been a 5 star but the bike came with a good size scratch right from picking it up. We got an ohhh well shoulder shrug from the employees. Totally bummed.
Was lucky enough to grab one of these in the Spring when they became available. Feel like winning the lottery. Set it up tubeless and took advantage of the adjustable dropout to put it in the shorter (420mm) wheelbase mode. Since then, I’ve put hundreds of miles on it on chunky, rooty, and rocky New England singletrack. The 2021 geometry gives me a ton of confidence with no compromise on the climbs. Grab one while you can!
Great experience purchasing from REI, staff was super helpful and friendly. This was a gift for my teenage son, and he absolutely loves the bike, especially the dropper post, and length of it, says it handles really well on trails and is super fun to ride. It had all the features he was looking for in upgrading from a $700 beginner bike to one with more features. He says the frame is stiff, bike has modern geometry, the head tube angle listed on Salsa website is 66.4 but that is measured at 25% sag the actual head tube angle is 65, the fork feels plush, it leans through corners well, the 27.5+ tires provide great traction. Easy to order online and pick up fully assembled at store, this was a huge relief to find after looking in person at many local bike stores who are out of inventory or sold out of pre orders.
What a great bike! Picking up the bike from my local REI store was a breeze. REI already put the bike together, and the tech went over all the features of my new bike. They offered to keep the bike and upgrade the tires to tubeless, but I was ready to get on the trails the next day. So if you're on the fence about picking up this bike, DO IT! I upgraded from a 10-year-old Specialized Hardrock Sport, and the Timberjack is leaps and bounds a much better bike. My confidence has increased tenfold because of the new suspension and massive tires.
someone wrote a review on their local REI and not the bike. Great bike...spec'd out the way you'd want from a non-race ready hardtail.
