Good shorts! The REI.COM description is lacking..
These replaced a twelve-year old Pearl Izumi (PI) bibshort that finally had the chamois disintegrate. I've only got 50 miles on 'em so far, but they're comfortable and fit well. Hey, REI.COM merchandisers: The single most important thing about bibshorts is the chamois (saddle padding). Bibshorts are "intimate apparel". But your website copy doesn't show photos of the chamois, nor does it offer a decent description. I had to do too much websurfing to understand your product offerings. PI makes three grades of chamois. They call them "Select", "Elite", and "P.R.O.", in order of cost. The more expensive ones have denser pads suitable for longer rides. This product I bought has the midrange "Elite" chamois. You also sell less expensive "Escape Quest" bibshorts with the "Select" chamois, and more expensive P.R.O. bibshorts. And, you sell other brands, all of which offer multiple grades of chamois. I respectfully suggest you up your game on these products' descriptions. The "Elite" chamois in this bibshort is comfortable for me.
Misplaced chamois and seams
The seams that run through the back where the integrated back pocket will require a base layer otherwise it digs. The chamois, unfortunately, barely covers my sit bones and if I shift around then my sit bones are exposed. Up front, there's plenty of chamois which bunches up like a diaper. I wish I'd figured this out before taking the tags off and taking them out for a day. A short ride (21 miles) was barely tolerable in this, but I will not wear this if I have a choice. This was a disappointing purchase considering I have both a PRO and a cold weather bib from Pearl Izumi and both of those are rock stars.
Seam placement, misshapen chamois
I liked the overall material and initial comfort but I will be returning after 1 ride. I thought it wouldn’t be a problem but the non-flat seam down the front would have caused some uncomfortable chaffing for me right where no one wants it. I also struggled with the shape of the chamois/padding. It just never felt right on my saddle. After 30 minutes I knew it wasn’t going to be for me.
great so far
Just used these for two days on the trail. 65 miles each day. Great chamois, really like the slightly longer length of the shorts. Suspenders are lightweight and not tight but shorts did not slip at all. Really happy with them after this trip. Fit was very good.
Not horrible, not worth it
I thought the pockets were better than the Interval Cargo, but it's a relative comparison (the Interval pockets are a joke). The chamois in the Expedition are bottom basement entry level. I'd rank them down with the Specialized entry level pad. For $25 more, get the Rapha Core Cargo bib. A night and day difference!
All Day Worthy Bibbs
Pearl at it's best. They are very comfortable from the wide suspenders to the excellent chamois. I've put in many 30 to 60 mile rides with some lasting for most of the day that include refreshment and fueling stops with friends. The side pockets work. After a few rides I was comfortable knowing that my phone wasn't going to fall out. They are well worth the money and were great on RAGBRAI.
disappointed
Totally different fit than my other pearl izumi bibs. These run MUCH larger or are made for someone over 6'
Great value and features.
Nice quality and features and fits me well. I'm 5'9" 165 lb with a 33" cycling inseam and find the large to be perfect, nicely snug without excessive compression. The straps are flat laser-cut fabric that I don't feel at all when underway. The inseam is fashionably long and have the right fit a few inches above knee. The chamois is seamless and has a good density and thickness. Fabric is a little heavier and tougher than many other bibs, which I like for abrasion and snag resistance and overall durability. The side pockets are made of the same material rather than mesh as found on many other cargo bibs. I find mesh can snag and tear more easily. They also have a gusseted bottom for better fit when there are items in them. I tried the Rapha bibs from REI and the large were way small. They fit my 5'6" 130 lb wife well so she kept then. I then tried Rapha XL and they were still way too tight on me so I returned them. Too much compression and straps pulled on my shoulders.
Inconsistent Product
The fit is different from my other PI bibs. Shorts are too long and chamois is in a bad position. I’ll wear them but wouldn’t buy another pair.
Not suitable for a long expedition ...
While the pockets and chamois are nice, I sit right on the stitching that holds the chamois to the shorts and, after 40 miles, it is a bit painful. I was hoping for much better.
