Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I bought these last minute when my purchase from another brand failed miserably. Two people recommended these for hiking. I put them on for the first time wed and hiked ten miles into havasupai on Thursday. Not a single blister! I have arthritis in my neck and spine and I had no added trouble on my hike. I was honestly very surprised. The zero drop had me worried, but it was sooo nice! Not only is the product amazing, but their customer service was beyond helpful. I noticed a defect in the toe of my shoe-contacted them and had the problem resolved quickly and without any hassle. I don't think I will buy another brand again. OH!! And the yellow color! love!!
Great for: forefoot running, hiking, looking awesome Wide toe box and zero drop tech makes you feel like youre trekking along barefoot. These are insanely lightweight, gonna blow your mind. Altra considers these to be for advanced runners but don't let that stop you, they could be just great hiking shoes for you even; BUT these shoes do NOT have a very cushioned bed. They ARE very grippy, even walking on pavement they are grabbing the ground, giving great stability. Once again, they'll blow youre mind they way they grip terrain so well and then RELEASE! you can lift your leg up easy peasy so light.
I have had three different pairs of Altra's and am a loyal buyer; I am a size 8 regularly and always have sized up to 9s when buying Altra running shoes. This is the first and only pair that are running extra big, which is strange coming all from the same brand, so just a heads up!
Bought these shoes last month and am loving them. Like so many women, my feet are narrow at the heel and wide at the toes. For years I have bought the widest running shoes I could find, but with each pair my heels would slip and my toes would be squeezed together to the point of pain. It had even gotten to the point where I contemplated cutting a hole in the side of my shoes to give my little toe room. Just got back from a two-week vacation: wore my Altras every day for up to 20,000 steps and my feet remained happy. I can't thank you enough for making these shoes -- now I can walk without pain and might even be able to begin running again.
I have been wearing Lone Peaks for over a year now and love the toe box and the zero drop but found my foot was moving around inside the shoe too much. I have worn the Superiors twice now and love them. Same great space in the toe box but no more sliding! Another reviewer mentioned sizing, i found that I had to go up a size (10.5) in the Lone Peaks but this was WAAAYYY too big in the Superiors. I returned my 10.5 and bought a pair of 10s. One reviewer mentioned they are slippery, I was a bit disappointed to find I slipped quite a bit on pavement this morning but the trails were fine. The rubber did not seem 'sticky' enough in the cold.
The Altra superior has been my favorite trail shoe for the last 2 models. This Superior 4.0 has an extra wide toe box with no way to cinch it in. As much as I love this shoe I have blisters on both feet where I have never had blisters before (medial edge at the ball of my foot) because my foot is swimming around in there and the next size smaller is too short. I love the zero drop and don't want to have to find another trail shoe but I'm not sure my feet can last until the next upgrade. So disappointing. Below I said I would recommend the shoe but only if the person has a really really REALLY wide forefoot. I do have a wide 4 foot but not this wide.
I'll preface this by saying that I've always loved my Superiors. I went through 3 pairs of the Superior 3.5s before finally having to upgrade to the 4 and I am super disappointed with this shoe. First of all the sizing changed so I had to get 1/2 size smaller than I normally get. And the laces are excessively long. But the biggest complaint is that they feel too flimsy. I used these on the same trails I always run on and you can feel every root and rock. By the end of my run my feet were not that happy. I'm super bummed to have to find another shoe as the superiors have always been great light weight trail shoes. But I think they went too far on this latest model
I have purchased other Altra shoes (Escalantes) which I loved, and decided to try some of the trail shoes because that's where I run primarily. However, the first time I wore the Superior 4s I slipped on some steps in my backyard on my way in from a run and had some nasty injuries. Since then, I've had multiple near misses and now only wear them in ideal conditions. I'm not sure if it's the material or if they were sprayed with some sort of coating, but honestly, these shoes are dangerous. I would strongly advise against purchasing these shoes if you plan on running on any terrain other than gravel.
Yikes! This definitely does not sound ideal and we hope you're okay! We can assure you there is no coating, but the Superior tread is very limited to function on slick surfaces from what we're finding in customer wear. We will surely take into consideration your experience and thank you for taking the time to share this!
Writing this on the women's because men's suprerior 4.0 has been removed from the website. I have owned 5 superiors 2.0 x 2, 2.5, 3.5 x 2. All size 13. This one is a half size too big. Did not bother to try on at a store because I thought the sizing would be the same as all the others. Not so. The materials used to make all previous versions also seemed to be similar. The 4.0s are made of some plastic like material and some space age polyester. Don't care for either. Foot shape and low profile still make it a go to shoe but please make sizing consistent and don't use experimental material.
I bought these shoes to replace an old pair of Altras- different style - and wore them today to walk about 2 miles. I didn't want to take them off when I got home, they were so comfortable. I sized up half a size from my old ones - I have a Morton's toe (second toe longer than the big toe) and was tired of that toe hitting the end of the shoe. I was worried these would be too long, but they are perfect despite the angle of the toe box. I have a normal B width foot. They look more charcoal than purple to me. .
