Disappointed
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This duffle seems very durable. There's lots of nice features including backpack straps (if you plan to use them), laptop sleeve, two side pockets, and a mesh pocket on the inside. However, I found it to be very stiff, heavy, and cumbersome. The entire duffle comes neatly folded in one of the side pockets but good luck getting it back in there once you've taken it out. The inside partition is a flimsy little pad that has some annoying toggle buttons to secure. I also found some stitching issues with my bag the day I received it so make sure you check the seams of your bag carefully!
Perfect Bag for a Weekend Ride Phoenix to Vegas.
I packed 4 days worth of touring-around-Arizona-to-Utah gear in this bag. It strapped well on top of another bag and to the back of a motorcycle. It held my hiking shoes when I was riding and my boots when I was hiking. The compartments kept my things organized and easy access. The straps were quick to store and quick to use. The bag even survived it's first light snow and freezing rain ride. All in all, I'm thrilled with my purchase.
Skeptical converted
A skeptic at first. Have used the Patagonia on multiple adventure style trips (like flying, to a van, to a ferry, to a safari style truck, to a Jeep to the other side of the island all in one travel day). And this Northface I took to Maui and liked it better. I wanted to use the Patagonia black hole duffle but decided to try this out. It was very surprisingly nice. The biggest comparison is that it is lighter overall, the backpack straps are designed better with easy to unclip and stow away internally and great internal dividers. Kept things nice and flat from horizontal to verticals (duffle to backpack carrying modes) which is nice to not have all your stuff smooshed around when traveling. But one of the little sneaky nice features is it’s shape and structure. It just works. Fits amazingly in overhead compartments on different sized air plains. Rides snug against your back. Has a grab handle on all four sides. Just a really great product. Wouldn’t have gotten if it wasn’t also made from recycled materials. Highly recommend.
Could be made better with one minor tweak
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was between this bag and the Patagonia black hole in the similar size. After some back and forth, I pulled the trigger on this bag because of the laptop sleeve. I've used this bag for a few camping trips already and plan to use it again tomorrow for a short two night trip. Upon unboxing this bag, I was struck by the beautiful color and the small size it was rolled into (it's own bag!). It was easy to unpack and I love the variety of pockets that are included. The detachable/customizable divider is also great, as it can be put into the bag in a few different ways and laid down for storage, or if it's not needed. This bag is easy to pack, adjusts to size based on how you fill it, and the number of handles on it make it super easy and convenient to pick up and throw around in any number of ways. My only complaint about this bag is that the backpack straps tuck into the top of it, so when it's empty and you're trying to pack it up, the lid forces the whole bag to fall over, rather than sitting flat while you pack.
Obsessed with this duffle
Such a high quality bag. I love the material, I love how smoothly the zippers glide, I love that it turns into a backpack and back into a duffle. But my favorite part is the fact that there are handles on every side. It makes this the perfect bag for a road trip (easy to grab from anywhere in the car) or to check on a flight (no problem finding a handle on the baggage carousel). I wouldn't, however, use this as a full time backpack or anywhere you had to walk long distances. The backpack straps are only comfortable if it's packed very lightly and it doesn't come with a shoulder strap for duffle mode. Still very happy with my purchase and looking for more opportunities to bring this bag along! More road trips in 2023!
The Ultimate Duffel
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It's no question that The North Face makes incredible products, but this bag takes it to the next level. We were preparing for a sailing trip around the BVI and needed a duffel bag. The amazing team at TNF in Charlotte (shout out to Terrell and Alicia) introduced us to the base camp voyager and it was love at first sight. My husband was able to pack a week's worth of clothes and then some. The compartments came in handy when organizing items which was crucial as we were living our of our bags. Even at capacity the bag fit comfortably on both of our backs (I'm 5'3" and he is 6'1"). If you are in the market for a new duffel, this bag is a must.
Minor issue, otherwise great!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was torn between this bag and the similarly sized one from Patagonia. After going back and forth, I decided on this one because of the laptop sleeve which I feel would really come in handy. Upon receiving this, I was surprised by how small it can fold up into itself, even with the fairly firm backpack straps. However, I haven't been able to get it back into that shape again, though I'm sure that I could with the help of YouTube. I have taken this on two trips so far and love the variety of ways you can carry it/pick it up, which makes dealing with it super easy. The divider inside is also really great because it is soft and detachable. You can place it in two different locations, or lay it down flat to store it. You can cram this thing full without struggle. The only thing I don't like about this bag is that because the backpack straps tuck into the top of the bag, the top is very heavy and will tip the bag over unless it is completely full. So when you are packing your bag, it is slightly annoying... I wish the straps were on the bottom. Otherwise, great bag!
Loved it so much I bought two more!
Love love love this bag. I considered other options like the original Base Camp and Patagonia but chose this one. It looks so stylish, is pretty easy to hold or wear as a backpack, can be used as plane carry-on, and stacks well with other bags. Looks small but can fit a lot; I've used it for 3-4 day trips. I had a previous edition that I've had for a few years and is holding up great. I even bought a second for myself and another as a gift! Appreciate the new pockets that have been added as well. Definitely high quality and sturdy. Only downside is that it can get a little difficult to hold when heavy but that's only because it can fit so much.
Better than great!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the perfect duffle for short trips when you don't want to even hoist a carryon into the overhead bin. Fits easily under the seat in front of you, and it's very lightweight, so it adds very little to the overall weight of what you've packed. Plenty of space inside, including in the various side pockets, for 3 to 5 days' worth of clothes, and the external zipper pouch is great for stowing a laptop but having it close at hand during a flight. Very well made. I used it for a trip to visit my sister and brother-in-law, and my very discriminating, frequent-traveler brother-in-law decided to order one for himself! It basically sold itself!
Comfortable and Functional
I'm on the road at least 3 days per week and I try not to check in my bag so that I can be in and out of the airport as soon as I land. I usually carry a backpack for my laptop, headphones, and an electronics organizer (laptop cords, pens, charging cords, etc.) as well as any other miscellaneous items. For my clothes and toiletry, I had a Patagonia duffel that was probably 20-25L in capacity. It worked, but the duffel can fill up really quickly if I have to carry a travel pillow or dress shoes. After my recent trip to Utah, I wanted to try a duffel that also worked as a backpack. I didn't have too many criteria - just that the backpack straps were comfortable and that there is a dedicated laptop compartment. In the store, I tried on the 30L and felt it was a little too small for everything that I have to carry since I plan on combining my duffel and backpack into one luggage. Fortunately, I saw the 42L online and ordered it immediately. A few pros: - I like how lightweight it is prior to loading it up with all my stuff - The laptop compartment, while thin, still felt secure because it is sandwiched between your back and the rest of your stuff - The dividers inside is nice for additional organization - Shoe compartment is great; finally my shoes don't take up room in the main compartment - The shoulder strap is surprisingly comfortable. A lot of backpack duffel tends to feel flimsy when worn as a backpack, but I didn't feel that way at all. A few cons: - The 30L had a built-in water bottle holder on the side that the 42L did not have. Too bad. I tested it out in the store and it can actually expand to hold a 40L Hydro Flask! - Shoe compartment is a great addition, but it is really small. I'm only a size 7, yet I could barely fit a pair of dress shoes. - Because the laptop compartment is part of the "lid," it can make unpacking/taking things out kind of a drag. With the laptop inside, it weighs down one side of the duffel which makes packing difficult. Still, it's nice to have this compartment. - I wish there was a chest or abdomen strap. While it felt secure on my back, even when fully packed, it would have been nice to have an additional strap for stability and comfort. Overall, this is a great pack if you want to combine your laptop bag with your duffel. I was able to fit a ton of stuff in it, but still felt that it was comfortable to carry. I look forward to many years of traveling with this bag!
