Bad product from a bad company
I bought a pair of Montane Atlas snowshoes in early January 2025. I took them out for a 1.5-hour hike (with a windchill of -30°C), and noticed tears in the material that connects the mesh to the frame. I returned the product to the shop, and managed to get an exchange, but only with much reluctance (even if they boast about having an exceptional quality guarantee). They told me that the tears were due to improper use. With the new pair of Montane snowshoes, I went on a snowshoeing trip at the end of February (again, with a windchill of around -30°C), and the tears were even worse. This time, I contacted Atlas directly to explain the issue with both pairs of snowshoes (a total of just a few hours of use). They simply replied that this part wasn’t covered by the warranty and that it was due to improper use. Worse, when I asked if they had any repair suggestions, they told me they didn’t have any options in Canada. I had the same pair of snowshoes for 20 years (from another company) and never had a problem, so I don’t buy the "improper use" argument. Anyway, what kind of improper use can you have with a pair of snowshoes when you’re just walking in the snow? Over the past 25 years, I’ve dealt with several outdoor companies, some of which offer impeccable service and live up to their reputation. With Atlas, both the products and the service are very disappointing. It’s better to choose another company
Broken frames twice for the regular user
I live in deep snow country and use these almost daily. My first pair of Atlas Montanes lasted about one season before the aluminum frame broke. In Dec. '21 I tried to replace them with a different brand but nothing suitable was available at that time. I got some newer Montanes and 3 months in the frame broke. So disappointed. I'm 64. I do not misuse or mistreat my equipment. I do not do anything crazy or unusual. I weigh about 160 lbs. A bad investment for the frequent user. Just did not hold up to regular walking. These are not the shoes you're looking for.
Efficiently effective
A very well designed binding makes getting in and out a breeze when crossing territory that switches from deep snow to long patches of exposed ground. The binding also holds tight to the foot which means I can focus on hiking and not worry about losing a shoe. They're lightweight and the 30" allowed my 220 pound body and 50 pound pack to glide along the snow with little sinkage. Whether I am trudging up Stuart Peak in the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area, cruising downhill on a steep face, or simply gliding along a long flat snow covered stretch these awesome snowshoes allow me to get where I want to go.
Left & Right!
Once I worked out which shoe was left and right they were super comfortable to walk in. There's a small icon on the binding to tell you which is L and which is R. The bindings are really easy to adjust. The guy at REI suggested these as they're simple and have very little to break. I've been able to go up steep slopes without any slipping & walk on powder with little sinking. Previously I'd been using MSR shoes and I once I got used to the length, I found these much easier to walk in.
Fit my need
Zero complaints with these snowshoes. Easy to put on, love the ability to pop up the heal when going up hill. I can't speak to the weight recommendation. Because I was using these for hunting I purchased a pair well above my weight in case I ended up with a heavy load on the wat out. I can say, I barely sunk into the snow while my hunting partner was going up to there knees. I would buy again. Also I wish I caught the name, but mad props to the Medford REI employee who help me. I had very little idea on what I was looking for and he was a huge help.
Great shoe, love the bindings
Just what we wanted! I got the men’s for him; he got the same model in women’s for me. They are working out perfectly. Love the bindings, and nice length and width of the snowshoe. And there’s actually snow this year!
Snow Shoes
really light and easy to carry and easy to use, can adjust quickly during use
Bad Binding
While they function okay the bindings don’t hold tight and the snowshoes come off too easily. It ended up being a chore to use these and not worry about constantly losing a snowshoe. I ended getting a different brand and have had no problems.
Happy feet
My wife must have gotten tired of me complaining about the bindings on my old Atlas 830s. She got me these Montanes mid-winter and the difference is night and day. No more rotation in the binding requiring constant adjustments, and no more pressure on the top of my foot. The strap connection to the deck has just enough give and doesn't feel sloppy at all even in deeper snow. Some reviews suggest the deck is too wide affecting gait, but no complaints here.
Great until they aren't
I own a previous model to these, the 1030. They were great for countless adventures into the backcountry for about 10 years. Then the strap broke, which is not a user replaceable item. No problem, I thought, they can be repaired! All attempts at contacting Atlas have failed. Zero response, zero support. So much for repair not replace.
