I'm a casual rider and opted for the Burton Step On system. I tried on both the 2021 Rulers and Photons, and the verdict is that the Rulers definitely fit my foot better out of the two. There was no heel lift, or hotspots. Boots are true to size. I have normal feet. The flex is a bit on the soft to soft-medium side, but are super comfortable.
I got the sizing with the regular Rulers and then thought I'd be fine with the Step On versions because they should basically be the same shoe right? No they're not. They're extremely tight to the point where it gets uncomfortable after 30 minutes. I wanted to switch it out with the 8.5s, but the employee there was an absolute bloke and just would not let me walk away with the 8.5s. He kept swearing that after a heat mold and the hydraulic press, my feet would feel comfortable. Turns out he's wrong. I want to get these shoes off immediately and the guy at the store wasted about 2 hours of my time. Not only that, the size I need is sold out now. Thanks REI. Shoutout to the other dude that was getting all angry towards any customer that had questions and had a strange superiority complex and wouldn't cut it off until someone confronted him and said "did I do anything to peees you off because if not your attitude needs to go." Jesus Santa Monica REI is terrible
I love these. Not have to unstrap/strap my bindings after every run has probably added 30 minutes to each day. Quite comfortable and warm. SIZE UP, I think they run small.
This boot feels excellent, and I love the step-on ability! I tried snowboarding many years ago but never liked dealing with the straps, so I became a skier instead. These boots are a game changer, and I love how quickly I can put them on and take them off the snowboard. I kept running more than the other snowboarders at the learning hill because I had no straps. The boot did feel a bit tight at first, but then I loosened it up, and now it feels very comfortable on my feet. Thanks to this boot and step-on feature, I can now snowboard!
Absolutely avoid this step on boot if your foot is wide. After 30 minutes I thought circulation to my feet was going to stop.
When the Ruler flexes the single BOA design incrementally loosens at the shin and tightens over the foot. As you take up the slack at the shin the BOA keeps tightening over the foot until the foot lacing is too tight and becomes painful. There is no way to prevent this from happening.
