I am a lover of backpacks, and I couldn’t resist buying this pack because I loved the look and thought the features would be enough. But unfortunately, the pack lacks so many modern necessities. I hardly want to use it. First of all, don’t use this pack in warm weather. Your back will be a sweaty mess and I’m pretty fit, not a heavy sweat person. But the back is just not breathable at all. The pack is missing key features like organization options, and doesn’t have things like a water bottle holder. I would wait and see if they update this pack
Great bag that I wanted to love...BUT I just needed something bigger for my daily use. I think it would be a great bag for someone to have for high school or college but if you're hauling around items like water bottles, rain jacket, extra clothes and then your daily carry items like medical kit, concealed carry firearm, laptop, etc... it just isn't big enough. It has great features that I really liked such as the zipper and magnetic closures but even with all the cool stuff on it and the great construction I had to return it so I could get a bigger bag. Sorry Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 24; you were good but not for me.
It is a solid backpack for daily use, commuting and shorter stay travel. It is made well, carries up to 20 pounds of gear comfortably, looks good and the magnets are just plain cool and fun to use. The main PROS: I LOVE how the top of the pack bends to conform to your back for comfort but why not add some breathing elements to allow air to escape and cut down on back sweat? I used it as a carry-on for a 5 day trip recently and it was perfect but it got hot and a bit sweaty when walking around the airport. I am a fairly minimalist packer though and I wouldn't recommend it for over 3 days for most people. I really like the 'wood' color, too and it is a sharp-looking pack to carry. The magnets are great for function and quick access. It doesn't 'really' have 2 main compartments as they advertise though. There is room in front of the laptop slot to stuff a small packing cube in or a book or two if you like but then it pushes against the space in the front quick access main area. I find that this front area is the best 'go-to' spot in the pack so I don't want it compromised. I don't even bother zipping it up most of the time (unless I'm in an area where theft is a concern) because the magnets work so nicely. The main CONS for me: it needs a water bottle slot, a dedicated key/sunglasses pocket, the extra long straps dangle by the sternum and the shoulder straps, and it deserves a more breathable back panel. If this pack had just been made about a half inch wider and had a water bottle pocket in place of the daisy chain, it would be so much better. The daisy chain is useless to me as I don't like hanging things that will bang into me when walking. It also doesn't look right to me; like some designer thought to throw it in that spot at the last minute. I guess it would be helpful for hiking but I'd still rather have a slot there for water or anything instead. I'd even prefer nothing there at all and just make those 2 rip ruck pockets a little wider instead of the daisy. The opening is just barely wide enough for an iPhone 12 now and you have to maneuver your hand a bit. Why not make these 'quick access' areas better for quick access? You could even add a little divider inside wider pockets then and really make good use of them! I'm also not a fan of the large velcro patch area in front. I don't need to add patches and it covers the Mystery Ranch name (which I like to display in a subtle way). I'd much rather have a little zippered pocket for keys or sunglasses in that spot instead of the velcro patch. There actually is no area for keys or sunglasses now unless you keep them in a case. It is odd to have a pack without a key fob attachment nowadays frankly. I didn't think it mattered at first but I really wish it had a place for keys after a couple of months use. In addition to a pocket in place of the velcro, add a 'secret' or more secured area pocket in the back or side (or my preference...under the top grab handle) for wallets/passports/thin items and add some strap management to cut down on the dangling straps. For over $100, I think MR should have included these things. I'd also then be giving it 5+ stars instead of just 4 now.
I bought this to take the place of my everyday backpack that I was given by a company I used to work for. However as much as I wanted to keep it I ended up returning it because it's just small compared to what I was used to. It just didn't allow me to carry two water bottles plus laptop, cables, notebooks, etc... along with a rain jacket and other cold/wet weather gear. I'm bumping up to either the 2 Day Assault or Blitz 30 to handle all my daily stuff and a few contingency items. It would be a great bag for high school/college students to carry what they need for school.
I'm 5' 7" 150lb and have fairly broad shoulders for a woman. I loaded this up with my office EDC (laptop, paper notebooks, and 5 lb of chargers, etc) and was surprised that it just did not feel good on my back. After closer inspection, I found the lower lumbar pad to be the culprit. It just doesn't hit my back right. The rest - torso length, and shoulder strap angles seem to measure up against other packs I have no issue with - GR1, a Fjallraven pack, etc. Loading the pack up was a mixed experience as well, and probably led to uncomfortable carry. The back laptop section is very long and skinny; I managed to fit in a portable BT keyboard and some 8" by 6" paper notebooks. It has a dedicated volume so it's best to try and make use of it, however it is very narrow, so long and skinny things would fit best but I didn't have a lot that worked well there. My 13" ultrabook was just swimming in there but seemed protected enough. Ideally there would have been a way to make it more of a snug fit. The main compartment that is accessible via the very awesome pull panel worked just fine. the front pockets were awesome too. I was able to fit a macbook pro charger in there no problem. So very easy to access. I love the front half of the bag. The magnetic closures on both sets of pockets were so awesome. I really wanted to love this bag. I think this is an awesome revision over the first one on paper. But I will likely return it because of the way the back half is designed - the weight just isn't well distributed.
This bag is built. This bag has compartments and feels indestructible. It's comfortable to carry. The rip and magnetized pockets are great for one handed use; just grip and go, the magnets will take care of the rest. My main complaint is pocket access. Let me explain. If I carried multiple magazines in the front rip pockets, this pack is perfect. But if you carry various small items in them, it's so very cumbersome to fish around in them trying to locate the one or two small items. Due to the design and construction, there is no give in the pocket or does the V design give room to have a man sized hand and actually look while fishing. Same with the main rip pocket. great rip and go but the access/design doesn't allow you to actually find things that are on the bottom. I'm most likely taking this back but I'm having a hard time finding a comparable bag that's constructed as well as this one.
Versatile. Can use it for city commuting and hiking.i love all the pockets and all the places I can hang my things on. It’s very unique, cute and comfortable. It’s slim, a lot of backpacks don’t sit right on my back and look awkward but things hugs perfectly. No external water bottle pockets but I survive.
This pack is a great pack from mystery Ranch The pack is five stars the only issue I’ve had with it was REI I paid full price for this back and when I got it if we had dog hair all over it and already had stains on it so I’m pretty sure it was a return with no discount The pack is five stars
Great, we’ll designed back pack for daily commute - holds everything I need and I really like the magnetize closures.
I bought this pack specifically for a motorcycle backpack. Just today I was caught in a thunderstorm that came through earlier than expected. This backpack kept everything inside completely dry while riding through a deluge of water. Larger items are tough to fit but I wanted a smaller pack. Pricey but definitely worth the cost.
