First Ice Axe

I purchased this axe based on reviews and recommendations for an entry level ice axe for beginners and fall arrest purposes. I hike in the NH White Mountains where is it unlikely I will ever need to use an axe. I am happy with how light this axe is. The design is sturdy and comfortable to hold.

Super light

Bought it for self arrest going up Mt Whitney. Super light and incredibly durable. Used it to stab into the snow for a fellow to step on going up a steep section (he was new with crampons). Glissaded down and found plenty of bite.

Just DON’T: find another way to reduce weight.

Title says what you need to know but here are some specifics: 1) most uncomfortable carry imaginable. I used this on a 3 day hike with roughly two thirds of each day covering late season snow covered slopes. There is no comfortable way to carry this axe. By the end of day one, I was fighting hand cramps. By day three, I was fighting fantasies of ambushing my partner and stealing his axe. It wasn’t pretty. 2) the head might as well be made of play dough. You WILL dull and deform the pick if you strike anything harder than packed snow. Ask me how I know. 3) you can move more snow with a tent stake than you can with this axe. Between softness and size, the adze end of his axe is totally useless. On the plus side, it’s perfect for strapping to your pack if you’re looking to add a few extra ounces of ballast on summer hikes.

great lightweight ice axe

This ice axe is incredibly light and works great for snow scrambling/mountaineering as long as you aren't doing anything crazy. Definitely worth the extra couple bucks to have this lightweight ice axe compared to the traditional.
