pros outweigh the cons

In my search for a knee-ish length winter jacket, my constant problem is that 90% of jackets on the market simply do not fit someone with a pronounced pear shape. I am 5'7" with a 28" waist and 43"-ish hips -- if I were to follow Fjallraven's sizing charts, I should be ordering a small, as their sizing charts do not account for hips. As it is, I was lucky enough to try this jacket in the store and can confirm this jacket runs small compared to other Fjallraven -- medium would have been the correct size for my upper body, and I had to size up to the large for it to zip comfortably over my hips. I don't mind going up a size for the hips -- for other straight-cut outdoor brands, there is often no size that will zip over my hips. The ability to snap in the waist at the back also helps give it a feminine figure that mitigates the top being somewhat oversized for me. The gorgeous fit is the main benefit for me -- I only found one other jacket this season (from REI's home brand) that fit me well this season. Other features I appreciate include the flexible waterproofing using greenland wax, the double zipper, snap storm closure that is EASY TO SNAP (the snaps on another jacket I tried were VERY hard to open and close), ideal warmth for my climate (temperate regions that rarely, if ever, see snow), adjustable hood, very comfortable and well-placed pockets (the angle your arms sit at while using the pockets is very natural, wheras many jackets force my arms at a rather jaunty angle), and TWO covert chest pockets (one accessible while the coat is zipped, one with a zipper inside the coat, this has been SO HANDY). The main drawback of this jacket for a pear-shaped person is that the arms are HUGE. As is typical for women of my build, I have tiny shoulders and regular arms. Going by other reviews, this coat fits an absolute dream for women with broad shoulders and long arms, which for me... means that when my arms hang naturally at my sizes, the coat completely engulfs my hands, not even the tips of my fingers can be seen. There is a snap-adjustable cuff which can be used to prevent the sleeve from going past my hands, but actually that brings me to another one of the cons of this jacket -- there is no ribbed cuff, and I find the G1000 fabric plus the snaps actually somewhat uncomfortable against bare skin. My solution has actually been folding the sleeve back to make a cuff, so that only the comfy lined part of the sleeve is touching my wrist. It's not ideal, but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit for a jacket that fits my other requirements so well. The final drawback is that the jacket is not comfortable when fully zipped with the hood down -- there is no fleece or similar at the top of the jacket to cushion the G1000 fabric from rubbing on your chin, and it zips up quite high to protect you from the wind (very much appreciated in the right circumstance) so it is bound to bump against your chin as opposed to a jacket that only zips up to a turtleneck. I also would have appreciated the option of a removable hood -- I generally never remove the hoods on jackets but the hood on this jacket is SO. LOUD. Not louder than any other polyester/nylon/shiny fabric-esque hood lining, but it's my first time having a non-fleece hood lining, so I was shocked by how the noise of the hood interferes with listening to conversation of the person right next to you. All in all, while I hope they will make improvements in the jacket for next year (some fabric cuffs at the sleeves, some fabric/fleece at the top of the zip where it meets your chin, and a less noisy lining for the hood are critically necessary), this was still better than everything else on the market that actually fit my very pear shape.

Coat fit well, sleeve length is long (great for me, I have long arms), like the length of the coat, but it's very thin. Very disappointed in warmth. I wore this to get the mail on a colder morning (lower 30s) and was cold across my shoulders and back within just a couple mins. I emailed Fjallraven directly to ask if I needed to fluff the coat, their response is that it's a thin coat and best suited for spring/fall weather. Cool weather, not cold, unless you'll be layering. REI lists this as a 'warmest' option. Three stars bc both Fjallraven and REI sites give the impression this coat should provide more warmth than it does.

Perfect for tall + pear shaped women!

Perfect mix of fashion and functionality! I can wear this around town, skiing, or backpacking without looking out of place. The acorn color is definitely a brighter gold/yellow, NOT an orange or brown as displayed in the pictures. The adjustment in the back cinches the waist for a more snug and stylish fit, and the bottom widens out which is great if you have a hourglass or pear shape. I usually wear medium but the large was more comfortable on me. Best part, you can raise and move your arms around without it tightening in the shoulders or sleeves, but the sleeves are still thin and not too baggy!

Almost perfect - sleeves are a bit too long!

I’ve been wearing this jacket non-stop since buying it. It’s perfect for San Francisco winters (50-60 degree F weather) and keeping out the wind. The dark navy blue is stunning on too, it’s more a dark teal than it is navy and such a hard color to find! On my 5’4” frame, it hits above the knee and doesn’t look ridiculous. Downsides: I don’t have short arms, but the sleeves are very long. The fabric is a little stiff too, so I have to fold them inside along the sleeve seam to keep it from bothering my hands. Not a big deal, you can’t even tell the sleeves are rolled up and the seam helps guide how to roll them up without them being uneven. Consider: this jacket is not designed for very cold, snowy winter weather or for the rain. It will keep out misty/foggy conditions with no problems, but I wouldn’t wear this jacket in below 40 weather without another sweater layer and it would not be good for below 30 degrees F.

Great in snow and heavy rain

I love this winter coat and the color I bought it in! It’s true to size and I’m cold by nature so I needed a warmer coat for Wisconsin winter weather. I got what I paid for and more. I’m a 5’5”, 215 lb top heavy woman and the XXL fits great with sweaters still! I love the color as it is vibrant but subtle at the same time. Sleeves are long enough for me with room to fold back to keep the wind out. The pockets are deep w/zip and snap closures. I highly recommend this coat.

warmer and lighter

This jacket is replacing a 26 year old favorite and shocker it doesn't fit the same. The cut is a slimmer and longer. I am 5'5" 140 lb and ordered a large and it is not at all too big. I have realized after wearing it a couple of times that although I cannot layer a down vest underneath as I was accustomed to with the old fav, I also don't need it because this jacket is warmer and lighter. I really love the hood, and specifically because it is a bit more fitted than the old fav, yielding better staying behavior and visibility. The shell also seems tougher and handles my Aussie puppy's body slamming and arm grabbing.

Zipper lacks reinforcement, sleeves run long

Zipper tore within a few months. A coat this long needs a reinforced zipper to account for the increased lateral movement of one's legs relative to ones waist. Sleeves are long. Coat is not insulated, better for moderately cold weather. Sleeves are long, I have to roll them up which exposes the delicate lining. I love the look but expected more quality construction from a coat at this price point.

My favorite travel jacket

I bought this jacket in Nov 2023 for my work travel (mostly Seattle). It has become the perfect travel gear for both cold and rain over this winter season. What I enjoy most is - the length of the coat, the two additional pockets in the front (one outside front left and one inside front right) and the adjustable waist in the back. It will keep you warm, which I need, and has also kept my dry during a 20 minute walk in the rain without issue. I did size up in order to give myself additional room for layering, which was simply a preference. I’m now interested in purchasing a lighter packable style (as similar as possible) to replace my current rain jacket.

Nice Looking Jacket

Nice looking jacket, not super warm. Got this as a winter coat, but it is not super warm. Would not be able to wear this much under 30°. Sleeve length is perfect if you have excessively long arms, they hit just at the base of the hand, which is unfortunate that the material is so rough it just rubbed the backs of my hands raw. Wanted to love this jacket but just didn't quite live up to the hype. Front pockets were at a weird height so if your arms are as long as the sleeves it's just akward to use the pockets. 5'4" 125 got an x small and it fit like a glove, really liked the shape and overall fit, but the discomfort of the material rubbing on my hands and akward pocket location were just too much, had to return.

Absolutely love this coat!

This is my go to coat! The Acorn color is stunning. I get compliments all the time and Acorn is such a great complimentary color to all of my other Fjallraven and other outdoor wear. It’s light enough to offer wind protection with plenty of interior warmth for most of my NC Fall and Winter seasons. I’m 5’8” and length is great for keeping your backside covered and the arm length was great too. I weigh 202 with a 40D bust and purchased the XL, so I still have some room for layering. My favorite features are the color, the cinch in the back for a feminine shape (very flattering) and the quality details (brass buttons, easy to zip sturdy double zipper, material of coat). This is the type of coat that one will keep for a lifetime, truly a classic.

Hoping it will last for many many years

Needed a new jacket that would be warm in fall, moderate winters, and early spring. Great quality (Fjallraven) and perfect for every day use. I have had this for two months and have not run into the zipper issue folks mention in other reviews. I like that the arms are longer than other coats I have (I am 5’10) and that the hood seems to sit just right when in the rain (not blocking my vision). If it is super cold, I would add a warm layer underneath. Also love that it can be cinched at the waist to give it a flattering shape. Just the right touch.
