Great lifetime jacket
I love Fjall Raven brand clothing. I own many of their items. First off, for the best experience with Fjall, never pay full price. Although designed in Sweden, it is made in Viet Nam. It's just cotton and polyester. Wait for a good REI 20% coupon and buy it for $279.99 like I did. On to the jacket. There are pockets in all the right places. Outside and inside chest pockets. Hand warming pockets on the outside with fleece. Netted pockets on the inside hips large enough to hold bulky gloves or a winter hat. Many people complain about the zipper and it was awkward at first but I don't even find myself thinking about it while putting it on now. I actually like the double zipper because you can unzip the bottom and reach into your sweatshirt, netted pockets or unzip your pants for a wizz in the woods without having to heave your jacket up. Warmth. This jacket is a little heavier than I prefer for a casual everyday jacket. The padding is nice and the exterior is rugged. If it is above freezing out, a sweatshirt underneath the jacket is too warm. Especially if you are getting in and out of the car, or a store or building. A T-shirt is more than enough especially if it is above 40F. Below freezing an additional long-sleeve or sweatshirt will help keep you warm and is comfortable underneath. I normally wear XLarge shirts and sweatshirts. I bought the Large jacket and it forms to me really well in the sleeves, shoulders and down the back even with another layer underneath. The hood, waist and sleeve cuffs are adjustable and will tighten which is great for snow sports or whipping wind. The jacket shell is G-1000 which is Fjall's waxable fabric. So you can easily waterproof it. I really like this coat and I foresee using it for years.
Great coat!
I got this coat about a month ago and I love it. Much of the time a medium coat is a little short in the arms for me but this one is perfect. I’m 5’11” 170lbs, and the sleeves cover 1/3 of my hand when my arms are down, and slide up to my wrists with my arms up. I can layer a decently thick sweatshirt underneath with no loss of mobility. I’ve waxed it once to increase the water resistance and it is easy to do with a hair dryer, and quickly softens up after treatment. My only complaint is that the zipper is on the “wrong side” by US standards, so I’m consistently fiddling with the zipper trying to get it zipped. It’s a small thing, but I switch between heavy rain gear and this often, and the zipper being oriented on the wrong side throws me off.
Great for traveling/hiking in the wet/cold
I'm really enjoying this jacket. Great for PNW winters and traveling to colder destinations. This jacket comes with a light layer of wax imbedded in the canvas, not noticeable from a texture/color standpoint, but if you get some light rain you'll be dry. As I'm heading out to Jackson WY I've added a bit more of a wax layer by purchasing and applying some Greenland wax. Easy enough to apply with heat gun/hairdryer This did stiffen the fabric slightly but I could carry water in this jacket from point A to B if I were to make a bowl shape. To be clear; I wouldn't do this as you'd likely get the inside of the jacket wet by dipping it into water, but it does become that water resistant. The best part is that the wax will wear/wash out and it'll be a soft canvas jacket again for the cold dry air, which would also allow a bit more breathability for more active days.
Good Jacket but a couple flaws
Fits well, looks great, and super warm. I wore it around northern Europe during a cold spell and was comfortable all day. I like the fit too. A couple issues that bother me though... 1). The zipper is an abomination. I really, genuinely hate drealing with it. The cons of having a double sided zipper far outweigh the pros. 2). Small fibers from the insulation make their way through the shell leaving the jacket looking like it has lint all over it. I've never had this happen with a jacket before and I'm not sure what to do about it. Every morning, I pull the fibers out and at the end of the day, there are more. The jacket is black so it is extremely obvious. I'm waiting to see if the issue stops at some point soon but if it keeps up, I'm returning it.
Great warm jacket, horrible zipper
I love this jacket. It keeps me so warm during these midwest winters. Unfortunately, as many have mentioned, the zipper is quite bad. It was great when I first got it but after a year of use the zipper started to jam all of the time. I tried waxing the zipper but that didn't help. Now, after getting really jammed, the zipper lost some teeth once it got unjammed. I'm hoping fjallraven will fix it under their warranty. If I'm able to, I will post an update with their response. Either way, that's not great for the jacket only being one year old.
Great coat!
Not sure why some people are fussing over the zipper? At first, it took some getting used to but I eventually got it down. Anyway, this is a great coat! During the polar vortex 2022, I went outside to shovel and test out its abilities. I wore a fleece jacket to add another layer and it was awesome in frigid conditions! I can’t say how it works without another layer but I was warm, nonetheless. The only thing that was cold was any exposed skin like my face and my hands (I have OR wool gloves) which aren’t wind friendly. Did I mention pockets? You won’t run out of pockets in this bad boy. Sometimes I forget which pocket I put things in.
So warm and roomy!
Great jacket, it could easily easily fit four (4) keyboards in the pockets, but I only had 3 at the time.
Jacket with great potential. Serious flaws.
Jacket is warm and great, but has some serious flaws. For starters the zipper is terrible. Gets jammed way too often and is extremely finnicky. My partner bought the same jacket and I needed to constantly help her with the zipper. Bottom line the zipper works, but will take some time getting used to. The insulation fibers are coming out of the jacket by the 3rd use. This was extremely noticeable on the black jacket. We kept wondering were is all this lint coming from. We kept lint rolling the jacket and every use more and more fibers appeared. We finally figured out the fibers are coming from the insulation. Not acceptable for a almost $400 jacket.
My Storm Proof Jacket
This is my storm proof Jacket! I wear it every winter, and I never worry about extreme weather.
Withstands the rugged outdoors and the cold
I know this review is long but I want to give a complete low down on this jacket! I'm 5'8" and have an athletic build. Normally wear a small in fjallraven sizes but chose a medium this time around to have space to layer underneath for the extreme cold temperatures we experience in the far northeast. The sizing is awesome and actually fits reasonably well even without other layers underneath (not too big). Like all of my fjallraven equipment, this coat is amazing! I wore this literally every day from Jan-early March in weather ranging from -15 F with -25 F wind chill to around freezing. Just as I had hoped, I am able to easily layer with two wool sweaters underneath for the coldest nights (as I do astrophotography) and days while still having full mobility. The insulation of this jacket should be commended. Because I shoot wildlife photography, I constantly find myself literally crawling around on the ground, snow, and ice. Never once did my body heat melt the snow underneath me and drench the outside of the jacket, this being thanks to the synthetic insulation. The G-1000 material is honestly the best material for those who live outside! It's incredibly rugged material and that's why I chose this jacket as my primary winter coat! Also, the pockets are huge and I'm able to fit camera lens and equipment in all 8 pockets. Also, two-way zipper for the win!!! Why don't more brands have them?! Highly, highly, highly recommend!
